Author diversity in the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior 1958-2025.

We used application programming interfaces (APIs) to estimate gender and race/ethnicity based on names of first and last authors in 4,833 articles published in the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior (JEAB) from 1958 to 2025. From the first to the most recent 5-year interval, Gender API estimated that the percentage of articles with women first authors increased from 6% to 33% and the percentage of first authors Ethnicolr API classified as more likely than not to be authors of color (AOC) increased from 5% to 25%, with similar gains in percentages of last authors estimated to be w

Meaningful Interactional Diversity, Professional Development, and Service Intent in White Medical Students.

IMPORTANCE: At a time when diversity in higher education is increasingly perceived as beneficial only to minority students and disadvantaging to majority-group students, it is crucial to investigate its benefits broadly. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether meaningful interactional diversity (ie, cross-cultural engagement that influences knowledge or opinions) is associated with key educational outcomes among White medical students. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study included self-identified White-only medical students who matriculated to a US allopathic medical school bet

Supporting the home care workforce across the Southern United States: impetus, exploration, and policy strategies.

Southern states face severe home care labor shortages due to low wages, poor working conditions, and limited career advancement opportunities, which are exacerbated by the region's historical labor policies and economic inequalities. This study analyzed workforce size in relation to the population of older adults likely to require paid home care services, subsequently contextualizing those results using a thematic analysis of state American Rescue Plan Act section 9817 spending plans to identify trends in proposed initiatives designed to strengthen the workforce across the region. Our findings

Biomedical Science Ph.D. Career Interest Patterns by Race/Ethnicity and Gender.

Increasing biomedical workforce diversity remains a persistent challenge. Recent reports have shown that biomedical sciences (BMS) graduate students become less interested in faculty careers as training progresses; however, it is unclear whether or how the career preferences of women and underrepresented minority (URM) scientists change in manners distinct from their better-represented peers. We report results from a survey of 1500 recent American BMS Ph.D. graduates (including 276 URMs) that examined career preferences over the course of their graduate training experiences. On average, scient…

Including People with Spinal Cord Injury in Research as Participants, Partners, and Personnel.

Individuals with disabilities are significantly underrepresented in research and are often not included in discussions on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. The Advisory Committee to the National Institutes of Health Director Working Group on Diversity formed an ad hoc Subgroup on Individuals with Disabilities to develop recommendations on how to enhance the inclusion of people with disabilities in the scientific workforce as well as throughout the research ecosystem. The article summarizes those recommendations and how they came about, then contextualizes them for the spinal cor

Exploring Grit Among Black Prelicensure Nursing Students.

Unequal representation of black nurses in the workforce continues to plague the nursing profession. Preconceptions and understandings of the discipline are underpinned by the dominant white racial makeup, which may challenge ethnically diverse nursing students' perceptions of their ability for success. The need for a diverse nursing workforce includes the challenge of enticing minority students into and successfully through prelicensure programs. This study of attributes of grit in the lived experiences of black nursing students revealed evidence including consistent efforts and perseverance t

Development and Validation of the Professional Readiness in Diversity and Equity Scale: Protocol for a Scale Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI+) patients continue to experience stigma, discrimination, and inadequate knowledge among mental health and medical professionals. These barriers can negatively impact health care outcomes, leading to delayed treatment, mistrust, and unmet medical needs within LGBTQI+ communities. Providing culturally competent care to LGBTQI+ people remains a critical challenge within health and social care. The development and use of reliable and valid assessments examining LGBTQI+ health care professional competency continue to be i

The Reality of Representation: Diversity Among Moderators at a National Cardiothoracic Surgery Meeting.

BACKGROUND: The cardiothoracic surgery workforce remains underrepresented in racial and ethnic diversity. Achieving greater representation at national levels is vital for signaling inclusivity and encouraging aspiring trainees. We aimed to characterize the diversity of individuals selected as moderators in the setting of a national cardiothoracic surgical meeting. METHODS: Program records from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Annual Meetings (2015-2024) were reviewed. Moderators selected by the STS program taskforce were identified, and their perceived race/ethnicity was assessed by 5 i

Obstetric Racism, Education, and Racial Concordance.

The United States holds the distinction of being the developed country with the worst perinatal outcomes despite spending the most per capita on health care. Black women are three to four times more likely than White women to experience adverse birth outcomes. These outcomes persist despite access to prenatal care, insurance, and college education. A long overdue racial reckoning has arrived, beginning with acknowledging the fallacy of race-based medicine and the role of enduring systemic racism as foundational to obstetric racism in the reproductive lives of Black women. Centering voices of B

[Resilience in Gendered Practice: Role Construction and Workplace Realities of Male Nurses].

With Taiwan's advance into a super-aged society, the growing care needs associated with chronic diseases, multimorbidity, acute illness, and critical care compounded by the persistent nursing workforce shortage are reshaping the nursing profession. As part of this transition, a growing number of males are entering nursing education and clinical practice as members of gender-diverse teams. However, nursing has long been constructed as a feminized occupation, and its gendered work imaginaries and interactional norms have not dissipated as more males enter its ranks. This article is framed as a p

Sociopolitical Threats Heighten Minority Stress for Current Sexual and Gender Minority Public Health Trainees in the United States.

The current U.S. sociopolitical climate-marked by recent targeted anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) legislation and executive orders (i.e., sociopolitical stressors)-including those focused on antidiversity, equity, and inclusion-leads to heightened minority stress among current LGBTQ+ public health trainees, threatening their well-being and career trajectories. Macro-level (distal) stressors, such as discriminatory funding cuts, institutional censorship, and sociopolitical hostility interact with proximal stressors (i.e., expectatio

Patients' perceptions of male and female nursing interns in Guangdong and Guangxi, Southern China: The interplay of gender stereotypes, patient satisfaction, and willingness to receive care.

Nursing remains female-dominated globally, with gender stereotypes hindering workforce diversity. Male nurses account for 2% to 5% of China's nursing workforce, and Guangdong/Guangxi lack studies on patients' perceptions of male nursing interns. This study aims to explore relationships between gender stereotypes, patient satisfaction, and willingness to receive care from male/female nursing interns in Guangdong/Guangxi and identify influencing factors. In this study, a multicenter cross-sectional survey (Mar-Jun 2025) enrolled 460 inpatients from 4 tertiary hospitals (2 each in Guangdong/Guang…
