Efficacy and safety of stellate ganglion block for postherpetic neuralgia: a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

UNLABELLED: Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most common chronic complication of herpes zoster, characterised by persistent pain after the rash subsides with a particularly high incidence among the elderly population. Its pathological mechanism involves peripheral and central sensitisation, often leading to severe pain, sleep disturbances, emotional issues and a decline in quality of life, posing a significant burden on healthcare and society. Current clinical treatments primarily rely on pharmacological and interventional therapies yet their efficacy remains suboptimal. Stellate ganglion b

Stellate Ganglion Block for Management of Nicolau's Syndrome Following Intravenous Ibuprofen Injection: a Case Report and Literature Review.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Nicolau's syndrome (NS) is a rare but serious drug reaction that occurs after administration of many drugs through various routes, with a broad spectrum of manifestations ranging from severe pain up to skin necrosis. In this review, we reported a case of advanced-grade NS following intravenous injection of ibuprofen. Moreover, we reviewed the existing knowledge and current practice to present in-depth any possible pathogeneses involved in this condition and highlight the specific pharmacological properties of the offending drugs that may play a role in the development of

Efficacy of ultrasound-guided stellate ganglion block in relieving acute postoperative pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The efficacy of ultrasound-guided stellate ganglion block (SGB) in alleviating postoperative pain remains unclear. This meta-analysis was performed to determine the efficacy of ultrasound-guided SGB in relieving acute postoperative pain in patients undergoing surgery with general anesthesia. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis focused on randomized controlled trials comparing SGB with control or placebo. The primary outcome was the pain score at 24 hours after surgery. A random-effects model was used to calculate the mean difference (MD) or risk ratio with a confidenc

Effectiveness, Safety, and Predictive Potential in Ultrasound-Guided Stellate Ganglion Blockades for the Treatment of Sympathetically Maintained Pain.

BACKGROUND: Evaluating the effectiveness of stellate ganglion blockades (SGBs) proves challenging, since the criteria defining a successful blockade are controversial. This may be one reason for the scarcity of studies on this topic, thus forcing clinical guidelines to remain conservative in recommending SGBs. Moreover, factors to predict which patients will benefit from blockade series are not yet available. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to evaluate through a clinical approach SGBs' effectiveness performed under ultrasound guidance (us-SGB) and to identify factors to predict

Stellate ganglion block as an early intervention in sympathetically maintained headache and orofacial pain caused by temporal arteritis.

INTRODUCTION: We report a case of temporal arteritis with a sympathetic component in the orofacial region, which responded to stellate ganglion blocks (SGBs). CASE: An 81-year-old woman with limited mouth opening and pain upon chewing was referred to the Orofacial Pain Clinic at Nihon University Dental Hospital. The patient also presented with blurred vision and a burning sensation on the right side of her face. On clinical examination, the temporal artery was tender to palpation, and there was increased sensitivity in the temporal region bilaterally. The patient reported jaw pain and limited

Improved quality of life after sympathetic block for upper limb hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to assess two disease-specific quality of life (QoL) instruments after limited endoscopic thoracic sympathetic block (TS) at T4 for upper limb hyperhidrosis. METHODS: : Between 2001 and 2005, 112 patients underwent 223 TS procedures in a prospective study. Some 103 patients (92.0 per cent) had palmar, 87 (77.7 per cent) had axillary and 75 (67.0 per cent) had combined hyperhidrosis. QoL questionnaires devised by Keller et al. and Milanez de Campos et al. were employed before and after treatment. Mean(s.d.) follow-up was 21.9(10.1) months. RESULTS: A total

Pain relief by stellate ganglion block in a case with trigeminal neuralgia caused by a cerebellopontine angle tumor.

A 29-year-old woman with symptoms suggestive of trigeminal neuralgia is presented. Because of her age, an intracranial tumor was suspected, but images of a brain computerized tomography scan revealed nothing in particular. A magnetic resonance imaging was scheduled 2 weeks later. However, as the pain increased and occurred more frequently, the patient returned to the hospital 2 days later. After a stellate ganglion block with transient nausea and dizziness, the pain was noticeably relieved. Using magnetic resonance scanning, a tumor in the cerebellopontine angle was discovered, and at surgical

[Acupuncture and ganglionic local opioid analgesia in trigeminal neuralgia].

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is defined as a chronic, severe, electrifying and burning pain in one side of the face. The attacks are initiated by tactile irritations in a so-called trigger area of the trigeminal nerve and are perceived within the borders of this nerve's innervation. TN is a chronic condition which initially goes into spontaneous remission but these become fewer as the condition progresses. TN is classified as symptomatic when the etiology is known and as idiopathic when the etiology is unknown. There are various forms of treatment: drugs such as anticonvulsants, local ganglionic

[Two elderly patients with thoracic herpetic pain and post herpetic neuralgia treated with continuous thoracic sympathetic ganglion block through a placed catheter].

Epidural block is very useful in the treatment of herpetic pain and post herpetic neuralgia. However, in the elderly patients with cardiac disease or diabetes mellitus, severe cardiovascular changes may occur by epidural block. Epidural block caused severe hypotension in two elderly patients with herpetic pain and post herpetic neuralgia who had diabetes mellitus or hypertension. Continuous thoracic sympathetic ganglion block with local anesthetics through a placed catheter reduced their pain and caused almost no changes in cardiovascular system.

Prevalence of cyclic changes in limb volume (volumotion) of male patients with knee injury and the effects of ischemia/reperfusion due to tourniquet.

During surgery of limbs tourniquet up to a maximum of 2 h is frequently applied which may cause ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI). During this condition the presence of vasomotion may have consequences for the perfusion and nutritive state of the tissues. We used a noninvasive plethysmographic method to investigate periodic changes in limb circumference (volumotion) in healthy male patients (n = 24) undergoing surgery for knee injury. To facilitate surgery a tourniquet was applied to the thigh, which caused an IRI of the leg. Results are given as mean of all values +/- SEM. Immediately after t

The local regulation of blood flow evaluated simultaneously by 133-xenon washout and laser Doppler flowmetry.

The laser Doppler flowmeter and the 133-Xenon washout techniques of measuring cutaneous blood flow were compared for measuring the vasoconstrictor response of the hand during orthostatic maneuvres. Important discrepancies were detected for the two methods. When the hand was lowered by 40 cm a 40% decrease in blood flow was detected by the 133-Xenon method, while a 60% decrease was seen by the laser Doppler technique. Lowering the hand by 50 cm resulted in no further blood flow decrease when using the 133-Xenon method, but an 80% blood flow decrease was recorded with the laser Doppler method. A

Effect of spermatic cord phenolization on the spermatogenetic and secretory activities of adult rat testes.

We evaluated the effect of testicular denervation on the spermatogenetic and secretory activities of the adult rat testis. Testes were denervated by applying 20% (v/v) phenol to the spermatic cord and measurements were made 30 days thereafter. There was an increase in the frequency of stages VII-VIII of the seminiferous epithelium cycle, indicating an increase in the relative amount of mature elongated spermatids present in the seminiferous tubules. The frequency of stage XIV remained unchanged, suggesting that the rate of reductional divisions was constant. A decrease in the nuclear volume of

Hemodynamic effects of synchronous high-frequency jet ventilation during acute hypovolemia.

We studied the effects of synchronous cardiac cycle-specific high-frequency jet ventilation (HFJV) in pentobarbital-anesthetized, splenectomized, closed-chest dogs to test the hypothesis that phasic inspiratory increases in intrathoracic pressure (ITP) selectively timed to specific periods of the cardiac cycle have different hemodynamic effects during both hypovolemia (acute hemorrhage, 20 ml/kg) and neurogenic vasomotor shock (hexamethonium, 10 mg/kg) than those observed during normovolemic control conditions. Ventricular stroke volumes (SV) were measured by electromagnetic flow probes. The i

The diagnosis and management of post-traumatic pain syndromes (causalgia).

There are two major categories of post-traumatic pain syndroms: (1) causalgia; and (2) mimocausalgia states or reflex sympathetic dystrophy. Vasoconstriction is usually present. Because of the pain, limitation of motion of the extremity occurs, and may result in permanent disability. There is often a great disparity between the apparent trauma and the severity of the pain. Sympathetic blocks and sympathectomy are definitive modes of therapy. In a series of 147 patients, 56% required surgical sympathectomy. The rest were treated by sympathetic blocks, physical therapy, and other medical measure

Lethal effect of the serotonin-xylocaineR association in ganglion-blocked rats.

In rats anestetized with urethane and under ganglionic blockade by hexamethonium (20 mg/kg, i.v.), the i.v. injection of serotonin (60 mug/kg) determined apnea, ECG alterations and a brief hypotensive response which is similar to that as elicited when 5-HT is given to intact rats. During the hypertension which follows that initial response, apnea is still present along with more severe ECG changes. After that, blood pressure falls into a prolonged hypotension, which is invariably accompanied by death. Neither norepinephrine, nor respiratory analeptics (CoramineR, RemeflinF) were able to preven
