A survey of 8080 subjects was conducted in Baltimore, examining the association between infection with hantaviruses and renal disease. Two groups (N = 6060) with no known risk factors were selected to establish a baseline antibody prevalence. Overall, antibody prevalence was 0.25%. Clients at three geographically separate methadone maintenance clinics were surveyed regarding their lifetime use of ten commonly used benzodiazepines and barbiturates. Anonymous reports of child physical abuse were compared to reports made by professionals and by nonprofessionals on three characteristics: substantiation rate, seriousness of substantiated incidents, and severity of allegations. Data pertinent to the characteristics were abstracted from 1,207 reports made to the Baltimore City Department of Social Services during 1983. Here, we present a case of an immunocompetent 37-year old male who developed Aspergillus fumigatus osteomyelitis 16 years after extensive chest wall reconstructive surgery for Ewing sarcoma. His treatment course was complicated by a severe adverse drug reaction to voriconazole, requiring the use of oral posaconazole therapy. Serum 1,3-beta-D glucan assay was utilized to dictate the duration of posaconazole therapy. The patient successfully completed 9 months of oral posaconazole therapy and has not had clinical recurrence for 9 months off antifungal therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To study the risks of vial contamination and infection associated with immunotherapy vial mixing and injection.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of patient immunotherapy records from January 2000-June 2006.
SETTING: Tertiary care outpatient otolaryngology clinic.
RESULTS: Two hundred seventy-two patients were given 26,795 injections (average of 98.5 injections per patient). Three hundred ninety-nine total local reactions were reported by the subjects (1.49%; 95% CI 1.34%-1.63%). The majority (82%) of the local reactions occurred during escalation dosing. This study evaluates the impact of enrolling syringe exchange registrants in methadone maintenance on change in sexual-risk behaviors. We examined the prevalence and risks associated with interpersonal (physical and sexual) abuse among HIV-seropositive homeless or unstably housed adults. Data were obtained from the Housing and Health Study of participants living in Baltimore, Chicago, and Los Angeles (n = 644). We used logistic regression to identify risks associated with abuse. Adults entering pre-trial detention who inject drugs are at high risk for acquiring HIV/AIDS. In the current study, we examined pre-incarceration HIV risk behaviors among 114 people with opioid use disorder who inject drugs.
