BACKGROUND: Effective countermeasures are urgently needed to prevent and treat infections caused by highly pathogenic and biological threat agents such as Marburg virus (MARV). We aimed to test the efficacy of a replication-competent vaccine based on attenuated recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (rVSV), as a postexposure treatment for MARV haemorrhagic fever.

Viral infections may produce abnormalities in carbohydrate metabolism in normal subjects and profound changes in glucose homeostasis in insulin-dependent diabetics. Using an in vitro radio-receptor assay with 125I-labeled insulin and human-amnion (WISH) cells, the effect of viral infections on insulin receptors was examined. Outbred Swiss mice 3 to 4 weeks of age were injected intracerebrally with wild-type vesicular stomatitis virus or its temperature-sensitive (ts) mutants ts 11, ts 22, ts 31, and ts 41. Brain and spinal cord were then studied for pathologic changes by electron microscopy. All mice infected with wild-type vesicular stomatitis virus died within 2 days of inoculation. Diffuse ependymal alterations often culminating in necrosis in brain and especially spinal cord and rare foci of necrosis and mononuclear cell infiltration in the injected hemisphere were the main pathologic changes in these animals.

Salmonellae were isolated from 72 of 264 broiler-fryer type chickens that had been purchased in retail stores in the Lafayette, Ind., area in 1963. Meat from the tail area and giblet portions were used in sampling. Equal numbers of dressed whole and cut-up birds were positive for salmonellae. Malignant histiocytosis (MH: sinusoidal hematolymphoid malignancy) is a rare lymphoreticular disorder characterized by an aggressive clinical course in younger patients with weight loss, hepatosplenomegaly, generalized lymphadenopathy and pancytopenia.
