The Role of Optical Coherence Tomography in the Early Detection of Chiasmal Compression: Hypophyseal Adenoma Presenting With Bitemporal Nerve Fiber Layer Thinning.

Hypophyseal adenomas can present with or without minimal visual disturbances. We present a case of a 40-year-old male with a hypophyseal adenoma, highlighting bitemporal peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (NFL) thinning on optical coherence tomography (OCT) as a major sign of chiasmal damage despite minimal asymmetrical nonspecific changes detected on initial visual field testing. The bitemporal NFL thinning prompted further evaluation with MRI, which confirmed the presence of a macroadenoma of the hypophysis. Despite the large adenoma, treatment with cabergoline led to regression, and th

Monitoring the Opening of Rapid Palatal Expansion (RPE) in a 3D-Printed Skull Model Using Fiber Optic F-P Sensors.

We present a novel method for the online measurement of multi-point opening distances of midpalatal sutures during a rapid palatal expansion (RPE) using fiber optic Fabry-Perot (F-P) sensors. The sensor consists of an optical fiber with a cut flat end face and an optical reflector, which are implanted into the palatal base structure of an expander and is capable of measuring the precise distance between two optical reflective surfaces. As a demonstration, a 3D-printed skull model containing the maxilla and zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) was produced and a miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal ex

Diagnosis of Glaucoma on Retinal Fundus Images Using Deep Learning: Detection of Nerve Fiber Layer Defect and Optic Disc Analysis.

Early detection of glaucoma is important to slow down progression of the disease and to prevent total vision loss. Retinal fundus photography is frequently obtained for various eye disease diagnosis and record and is a suitable screening exam for its simplicity and low cost. However, the number of ophthalmologists who are specialized in glaucoma diagnosis is limited. We have been studying automated schemes for detection of nerve fiber layer defects and analysis of optic disc deformation, two major signs of glaucoma, in assisting ophthalmologists' accurate and efficient diagnosis. In this chapt

Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer May Be Better Preserved in MOG-IgG versus AQP4-IgG Optic Neuritis: A Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Optic neuritis (ON) in patients with anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)-IgG antibodies has been associated with a better clinical outcome than anti-aquaporin 4 (AQP4)- IgG ON. Average retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFL) correlates with visual outcome after ON. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine whether anti-MOG-IgG ON is associated with better average RNFL compared to anti-AQP4-IgG ON, and whether this corresponds with a better visual outcome. METHODS: A retrospective study was done in a consecutive cohort of patients following anti-AQP4-IgG and a

Benign Multiple Sclerosis is Associated with Reduced Thinning of the Retinal Nerve Fiber and Ganglion Cell Layers in Non-Optic-Neuritis Eyes.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: It is exceedingly difficult to differentiate benign multiple sclerosis (BMS) from relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) based on clinical characteristics, neuroimaging, and cerebrospinal fluid tests. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) allows quantification of retinal structures, such as the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, at the optic disc and the ganglion cell layer (GCL) at the macula, on a micrometer scale. It can also be used to trace minor alterations and the progression of neurodegeneration, help predict BMS, and influence the choice of therapy

Damage to the immature optic radiation causes severe reduction of the retinal nerve fiber layer, resulting in predictable visual field defects.

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to seek evidence of a relationship between damage to the optic radiation (OR) in the immature brain and subsequent development of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and associated visual manifestations. METHODS: Seven cases (2 males and 5 females ranging in age from 18 to 35 years old) were selected from a large cohort of individuals with known white matter damage of immaturity (WMDI), who had presented with visual dysfunction. They underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), including diffusion-weighted MRI. Visual function was evaluated by best-co

Optic disc and retinal nerve fiber layer parameters as indicators of neurodegenerative brain changes in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

PURPOSE: Retina is a unique part of the central nervous system (CNS) for visualizing the processes of axonal and neuronal degeneration. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) allows direct visualization and measurement of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, macular volume, and optic disc (OD) parameters. One of the disorders associated with atrophy in different brain regions is obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). In the present study, we aimed to determine OD and RNFL changes measured by OCT for investigating the progress of neurodegeneration development in OSAS, excluding all the oth

Sapphire ball lens-based fiber probe for common-path optical coherence tomography and its applications in corneal and retinal imaging.

We describe a common-path swept source optical coherence tomography fiber probe design using a sapphire ball lens for cross-sectional imaging and sensing for retina vitrectomy surgery. The high refractive index (n=1.75) of the sapphire ball lens improves the focusing power and enables the probe to operate in the intraocular space. The highly precise spherical shape of the sapphire lens also reduces astigmatism and coma compared to fused nonspherical ball lenses. A theoretical sensitivity model for common-path optical coherence tomography (CP-OCT) was developed to assess its optimal performance

Multiple wedge-shaped retinal nerve fiber layer defects in a patient with optic nerve glioma in the contralateral eye: case report.

This case report describes a young non-glaucomatous patient with neurofibromatosis and previous history of optic nerve glioma, which developed multiple wedge-shaped retinal nerve fiber layer defects close to a chorioretinal scar in the fellow eye. After discussing the different possible etiologies to the wedge-shaped defects, the disruption of the nerve fiber layer due to the chorioretinal lesion was considered the most plausible cause. However, further follow-up with visual field assessment, optic nerve head documentation and neuroimaging is mandatory in this case and may provide additional i

Axonal and neuromuscular synaptic phenotypes in Wld(S), SOD1(G93A) and ostes mutant mice identified by fiber-optic confocal microendoscopy.

We used live imaging by fiber-optic confocal microendoscopy (CME) of yellow fluorescent protein (YFP) expression in motor neurons to observe and monitor axonal and neuromuscular synaptic phenotypes in mutant mice. First, we visualized slow degeneration of axons and motor nerve terminals at neuromuscular junctions following sciatic nerve injury in Wld(S) mice with slow Wallerian degeneration. Protection of axotomized motor nerve terminals was much weaker in Wld(S) heterozygotes than in homozygotes. We then induced covert modifiers of axonal and synaptic degeneration in heterozygous Wld(S) mice,
