Work-related health issues among pharmacists during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Pharmacists are at high risk of infection due to their direct contact with potentially infected patients and customers during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to examine whether increased health issues among pharmacists during the pandemic were associated with pandemic-related changes in their work environment. A total of 438 pharmacists from 28 prefectures completed a self-administered survey between September 2021 and January 2022. Health issues with significant increases among pharmacists during the COVID-19 pandemic included depression, anxiety or emotional disorders, insomnia, eye

A qualitative report on the experiences of physicians during the pandemic of COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic posed unprecedented challenges to healthcare providers globally. The firsthand lived experiences of healthcare professionals who worked on the frontlines are invaluable. This study explores the experiences of frontline physicians during the early waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a descriptive qualitative study conducted in Isfahan, Iran, during September and October 2020, in anticipation of the third wave of COVID-19 pandemic. Thirteen physicians from COVID-19-designated hospitals affiliated to the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences were purposively selected fo

Coronavirus Diseases (COVID-19) Current Status and Future Perspectives: A Narrative Review.

At the end of 2019 a novel virus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), causing severe acute respiratory syndrome expanded globally from Wuhan, China. In March 2020 the World Health Organization declared the SARS-Cov-2 virus a global pandemic. We performed a narrative review to describe existing literature with regard to Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, management and future perspective. MEDLINE, EMBASE and Scopus databases were searched for relevant articles. Although only when the pandemic ends it will be possible to asses

Trends in funding for coronavirus vaccine research and development: implications for preparedness against future coronavirus threats.

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered unprecedented investment in coronavirus vaccine R&D, but the long-term trajectory of this funding remains unclear. We mapped coronavirus vaccine grant support from 2020 through 2025, and found an early surge focused on ancestral SARS-CoV-2, a pivot toward broadly protective coronavirus vaccines (BPCV), and then a steep decline in publicly available funding overall, especially in the United States. Reduced sustained investment may weaken future preparedness and response globally to emergent coronavirus threats.

The Possible Impact of Vaccination for Seasonal Influenza on Emergence of Pandemic Influenza via Reassortment.

BACKGROUND: One pathway through which pandemic influenza strains might emerge is reassortment from coinfection of different influenza A viruses. Seasonal influenza vaccines are designed to target the circulating strains, which intuitively decreases the prevalence of coinfection and the chance of pandemic emergence due to reassortment. However, individual-based analyses on 2009 pandemic influenza show that the previous seasonal vaccination may increase the risk of pandemic A(H1N1) pdm09 infection. In view of pandemic influenza preparedness, it is essential to understand the overall effect of se

Shifts in pediatric orthopedic injury patterns in the emergency department before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric orthopedic injuries represent a significant proportion of emergency department (ED) visits and are closely tied to physical activity, particularly organized sports. The COVID-19 pandemic imposed substantial disruptions on children's routines and healthcare utilization, offering a unique opportunity to examine changes in orthopedic injury patterns across different pandemic phases. The objective of the current study was to evaluate temporal shifts in pediatric orthopedic injury characteristics and ED management before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This

Introduction and acceptability of the Surveillance Outbreak Response Management and Analysis System (SORMAS) during the COVID-19 pandemic in Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: The Surveillance Outbreak Response Management and Analysis System (SORMAS) has been implemented for various infectious diseases since 2015. 2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, SORMAS was adapted to SARS-CoV2. METHODS: We assessed the acceptability and usability of SORMAS and accompanied its implementation in two pilot regions of Côte d'Ivoire (Abidjan 2 and Gbêkê) from July/August 2021 to March 2022. We conducted 136 semi-structured interviews to cover knowledge on COVID-19, information on conventional surveillance systems for disease monitoring including COVID-19, ac

[Closure of child care centers and SARS-CoV-2 spread: A regional analysis of lockdown measures].

BACKGROUND: On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared SARS-CoV-2 a pandemic. In the absence of specific vaccines or effective antiviral therapies at the beginning of the pandemic, non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) were widely implemented, including temporary closures of day-care centers (Kitas). METHODS: Using routinely reported case data from the Landshut Health Authority, we analyzed the period from November 2020 to February 2021. SARS-CoV-2 incidence before and after Kita closures was assessed for children aged 0-5 years and for the general population using an in

Editorial: The World Health Organization (WHO) Updated List of Emerging and Potentially Pandemic Pathogens Includes Yersinia pestis as Plague Vaccines Await Clinical Trials.

The importance of rapidly developing and distributing safe and effective vaccines was a major lesson from the COVID-19 pandemic, which drove new vaccine development technologies. In May 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) updated the identification of bacterial pathogens of importance to public health as guidance for research and development of strategies to prevent and overcome global antimicrobial resistance (AMR). In June 2024, the WHO updated the 2017-18 list of priority pathogens to provide a scientific framework for epidemic and pandemic preparedness. The 2024 updated WHO list of p…

Regional integration and environmental sustainability during the COVID-19 pandemic: Evidence from South Asia.

South Asia, a sub-region with nearly a third of the world's population living in extreme poverty and hunger, has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in an unprecedented way. The pandemic has undermined the progress achieved by the subregion towards attaining sustainable development goals. This study argues that fostering environmental sustainability in the South Asian region is crucial to "Building Back Better" while taking cognisance of future climate-related risks. With the low level of preparedness, the collapse of global supply chains, and restrictive regional integration, the individua

Comparative analysis of changes in pediatric burn epidemiology between national burn registry and regional burn center data during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic caused major societal disruptions, including shifts in childcare, remote learning, and parental work-from-home responsibilities, potentially altering pediatric burn incidence. This study compares pediatric burn admission numbers, etiology, and severity at a regional burn center to national trends before and during the pandemic. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study analyzed pediatric burn admissions and reported their proportion of total burns from a regional burn center and the American Burn Association National Burn Repository (2017-2022). Resurgence of Influenza Following the Lifting of Non-pharmaceutical Interventions in Shenzhen, China.

BACKGROUND: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, global influenza activity sharply declined due to extensive non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). Understanding how influenza activity rebounded after these interventions were lifted is critical for informing future respiratory virus control strategies. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive analysis of the temporal characteristics of weekly number of influenza-like illness (ILI) cases, ILI%, influenza-positive cases, and influenza-positive rates. Poisson log-link regression models, incorporating meteorological factors using
