Skull-Base Inflammatory Pseudotumor Involving the Trigeminal and Facial Nerves: A Singular Presentation of a Rare Disease.

Inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) is a rare disease that is often misinterpreted as a lymphoma or carcinoma. It may involve different body regions but most commonly the lungs and the orbital cavity. We report the case of a patient affected by an IPT of the trigeminal and facial nerves. A 69-year-old male presented to our hospital with a right facial palsy arisen suddenly 2 days before. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the head showed an abnormal mass with homogeneous enhancement involving the deep lobe of the parotid gland, the parapharyngeal space, and the infratemporal fossa, extending alo

Histological, SEM and three-dimensional analysis of the midfacial SMAS - New morphological insights.

INTRODUCTION: The superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) of the midface has a complex morphological architecture, and a multitude of controversial opinions exist regarding its in vitro appearance and clinical relevance. The aim of this study was to investigate the three-dimensional architecture of the midfacial SMAS. METHOD: Histological and SEM analyses were performed on tissue blocks of the skin, subcutaneous tissue and mimic musculature of the midfacial region between the anterior parotid gland pole and lateral to the nasolabial fold and tissue blocks of the skin, subcutaneous tissue

Partial Parotidectomy under Local Anaesthesia without Regional Block Assisted by Electromyographic Facial Nerve Monitoring - A Case Report.

THE RATIONALE: This study describes a partial parotidectomy (PP) under local anaesthesia (LA) without regional block (LAwRB) assisted by electromyographic monitoring of the facial nerve, to consolidate the feasibility, efficacy and safety of these procedures without general anaesthesia (GA). PATIENT CONCERNS: An 82-year-old with a lump in the left parotid gland suspected for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) needed a histological examination to start chemotherapy. DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENTS: Because of multiple comorbidities, the authors performed a PP under LAwRB electromyographically guided by the

Bilateral multifocal nodular oncocytic hyperplasia of the parotid gland: a rare entity.

Multifocal nodular oncocytic hyperplasia is an uncommon oncocytic lesion that rarely occurs in the parotid gland. Here, we report a case of a 43-years-old woman who presented with isolated gradual swelling in the 2 parotid regions. She underwent exofacial right parotidectomy. Histologic exam confirmed the diagnosis of oncocytoma arising in a background of multifocal nodular oncocytic hyperplasia with a histological variant of clear cells. Since the lesion was diagnosed as a benign lesion, surgery of the left side was not done. Our case is characterized by: early onset, the histological variant…

Prognostic Factors and Survival Outcomes in Parotid Gland Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis and Workflow Proposal.

Objective: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common malignant tumour of the parotid gland. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to evaluate treatment strategies, survival, recurrence, and prognostic factors in primary parotid MEC. Materials and Methods: A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. PubMed/MEDLINE, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched to identify eligible observational studies and clinical trials on primary parotid MEC. Pooled estimates of overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival (DSS), and local, regional, an

Primary temporal bone osteosarcoma presenting as a parotid tumor: A case report with diagnostic challenges.

Osteosarcoma rarely arises from the temporal bone, and few primary cases have been reported in adults. The prognosis of head and neck osteosarcoma is generally poor because of the complex anatomy in the region. Complete resection with negative margins is essential to adequately treat head and neck osteosarcoma. Preoperative imaging is crucial given the importance of complete surgical resection to prognosis. In this case, preoperative imaging, including computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, revealed a lobulated mass with coarse internal calcification, displacing the parotid gland

Unexpected cause of dyspnea: A case of pleomorphic adenoma in the trachea.

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign histological form of salivary gland tumors, particularly in the parotid gland, primarily affecting women between the ages of 40 and 60. However, its occurrence in the trachea is very rare. This article reports the case of a 48-year-old woman presenting with progressive dyspnea and weight loss, initially suspected of having a pulmonary embolism. A chest CT scan revealed a nearly circumferential tracheal lesion with 2 nodules partially obstructing the tracheal lumen. Histological analysis confirmed the presence of a pleomorphic adenoma of the "s

Sonographic characteristics of the facial nerve in healthy volunteers.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral nerve ultrasound has become an effective imaging technique. However, imaging of cranial nerves, especially in healthy volunteers, has received minimal attention. The objectives of this study were to describe the sonographic characteristics of the facial nerve and to establish average values of its diameter. METHODS: The extra-cranial part of the facial nerve was scanned bilaterally along its longitudinal axis inside the parotid gland using a 13-MHz probe in 50 healthy adults. The diameter was measured at the nerve's thickest region. RESULTS: The facial nerve appeared

Acinic cell carcinoma of the salivary glands: a literature review.

Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) is a low-grade malignant salivary neoplasm that constitutes approximately 17% of primary salivary gland malignancies. In the head and neck region, the parotid gland is the predominant site of origin and women are usually more frequently diagnosed than men. Previous radiation exposure and familial predisposition are some of the risk factors for ACC. A slowly enlarging mass lesion in the tail of the parotid gland is the most frequent presentation. The diagnosis is usually confirmed with a fine needle aspiration biopsy, and surgical excision is the main treatment of th

Venolymphatic Malformation Presenting as a Low-Flow Vascular Anomaly: A Case Report.

Venolymphatic malformations (VLMs) are rare congenital disorders involving the vascular and lymphatic systems. They are characterized by altered endothelial differentiation rather than true neoplastic proliferation, with lesion enlargement occurring in response to hormonal or inflammatory stimuli. We report a case of a 15-year-old male who presented with slow-growing swelling over the right parotid region that worsens with trauma, requiring multidisciplinary care. Clinical examinations and imaging findings on ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging were suggestive of VLM, a low-flow venous m…

Unique presentation of impaction of glass fragments in the buccal, submasseteric and parotid spaces subsequent to road traffic accident.

Penetrating glass injuries in the facial region represent a very rare and complex variety of trauma. Cases of glass foreign bodies in the orbital tissue or the eyeball have been reported. Scattered glass foreign bodies in both the superficial and deep layers of the neck have been reported. However, no cases, to our knowledge, have been reported for foreign body impaction over the cheek region.Occasionally, the foreign glass particles can be retained in the anatomic spaces. These are mostly the result of road traffic accidents or by interpersonal violence. These penetrating injuries can result

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of Accessory Parotid Gland: A Case Report.

The accessory parotid gland is salivary gland tissue separated from the main gland at a variable distance. This gland is histologically similar to the main gland, but has a higher incidence of malignant neoplasms than the main gland. Regarding the various malignant neoplasms, studies have shown higher incidences of mucoepidermoid carcinoma, with less than 2% being adenoid cystic carcinoma. We present a case of swelling in the midcheek region that, after clinical examination, was diagnosed as a case of neoplasm of the accessory parotid gland. On the basis of auxiliary investigations including i

Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors of the head and neck.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare tumor of mesenchymal origin that commonly occurs in the lung. Because of its non-specific clinical and imaging features, IMT is often misdiagnosed as a malignant tumor. There have been few imaging reports on IMT of the head and neck. PURPOSE: To analyze the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) of the head and neck. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six patients with IMTs of the head and neck confirmed by histopathologic examination were analyzed retrospectively.
