Thermal melanism explains macroevolutionary variation of dorsal pigmentation in Eurasian vipers.

Colouration may endorse thermoregulatory and antipredatory functions in snakes. The thermal melanism hypothesis predicts that dark-coloured individuals are ecologically favoured in cool climates. However, the loss of aposematic and cryptic colourations may imply high predation for melanistic snakes. Here, we used the monophyletic group of Eurasian vipers (subfamily Viperinae) to test whether an increase in the extent of dark area inside the characteristic zigzag dorsal pattern is associated to colder environments. We measured two colouration traits in zigzag-patterned individuals (number of do

Tips for diagnosis and treatment of nail pigmentation with practical algorithm.

The observation of a black-brown pigmentation of the nail is often alarming for the patient and for the clinician, as they are aware that it can be a possible clinical manifestation of melanoma of the nail apparatus. Luckily, however, nail melanoma is a much less frequent cause of brown-black nail color than other melanocytic and nonmelanocytic pigmentations, which include subungual hematoma, exogenous pigmentations, and melanonychia due to benign conditions. A correct clinical history and careful examination help the clinician to distinguish the different conditions and to decide the correct

Dermoscopy of black-spot poison ivy.

Black-spot poison ivy is an uncommon presentation of poison ivy (Toxicodendron) allergic contact dermatitis. A 78-year-old sought evaluation of a black spot present on her right hand amid pruritic vesicles. The presentation of a black spot on the skin in a clinical context suggesting poison ivy is indicative of black-spot poison ivy. Dermoscopy revealed a jagged, centrally homogeneous, dark brown lesion with a red rim. A skin sample was obtained and compared against a poison ivy standard using ultra-fast liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UFLC-MS/MS). This finding confirmed the pr

Rapid, severe repigmentation of congenital melanocytic naevi after curettage and dermabrasion: histological features.

BACKGROUND: Curettage and dermabrasion are effective in treating giant congenital melanocytic naevi (GCMN). We report two patients with rapid, severe postoperative repigmentation. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report on the histological features of such patients. OBJECTIVES: We wish to call attention to histological features that may cause rapid, severe repigmentation after curettage and dermabrasion of medium to giant CMN. PATIENTS/METHODS: From 1998 to 2002, we treated 23 patients with medium to giant CMN with curettage and dermabrasion. Patients being treated ranged in ag

Resolution of chlorpromazine-induced cutaneous pigmentation following substitution with levomepromazine or other neuroleptics.

Eleven chronic schizophrenic patients with abnormal skin pigmentation associated with neuroleptic treatment were withdrawn from chlorpromazine (CPZ), which was replaced by levomepromazine (n = 4), trifluoperazine (n = 1) or thioproperazine (n = 1) as the sole neuroleptic, by a combination of these phenothiazines (n = 4) or with haloperidol plus pipotiazine (n = 1). Seven patients showed complete resolution of abnormal skin pigmentation over a period of 1-5 years and 4 markedly improved over 2.0-2.6 years of follow-up. Our observations suggest that neuroleptic-induced abnormal skin pigmentation

Congenital grouped pigmentation of the retina. Histopathologic description and report of a case.

Gross examination of an eye removed at autopsy from a 4-year-old child with congenital heart disease revealed typical grouped pigmentation of the retina. Routine light microscopy and flat preparation of the retinal pigment epithelium demonstrated the lesions to consist of focal areas of increased concentration of pigment granules in otherwise normal retinal pigment epithelial cells. The pigment granules were large and football shaped. The overlying photoreceptors showed no abnormalities, possibly explaining the clinical features of normal visual acuity and visual fields in this patient. We bel

Skeletal pigmentation due to tetracycline.

Two cases of pigmentation of the skeletal system due to tetracycline are reported. It is suggested that tetracycline may be stored in bone due to a tetracycline hydrochloride calcium phosphate complex after prolonged tetracycline administration, and that tetracycline may be the antibiotic of choice in certain cases of osteomyelitis. Dark pigmentation of the teeth may be due to prolonged tetracycline therapy and may be the only sign of heavy deposition into the skeletal system.

Reflectance confocal microscopy for pigmentary disorders.

In vivo reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a non-invasive, repetitive imaging tool that provides real-time images at nearly cellular histological resolution. Application of this technology to skin imaging during the last decade has been a great advance in dermatology. As melanin is the strongest endogenous contrast in human skin, pigmentary disorders caused by abnormal amounts of melanin in the skin could be the most suitable candidates for RCM examination. This article reviewed the RCM applications in the characterization and management of pigmentary disorders. The application of RCM in

Leucism in sharks: a histological examination.

Isolated cases of skin pigment disorders, including leucism, in sharks and rays have been reported for multiple species. Nonetheless, the morphological basis behind these chromatic anomalies has not been examined histologically. In this study, the authors quantified and compared the presence of melanin in multiple tissue samples of leucistic and fully pigmented blacktip sharks Carcharhinus limbatus. The authors' results support lack of melanin to be responsible for leucistic colouration. The histological differences responsible were evaluated.

Bardet-Biedl syndrome: a case report.

Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a genetically heterogeneous autosomal recessive disorder characterized by progressive retinal dystrophy, polydactyly, obesity, hypogonadism, mental retardation, and renal dysfunction. Other manifestations include diabetes mellitus, heart disease, hepatic fibrosis, neurological features, and multiple pigmented nevi. To date, twelve BBS genes have been cloned (BBS1-BBS12). Herein we discussed a patient with BBS who had multiple pigmented nevi.

Epidermolysis bullosa simplex with mottled pigmentation.

A family in which epidermolysis bullosa simplex and mottled pigmentation are inherited as an autosomal dominant disorder is described. Clinical features include: non-scarring blistering, mainly affecting the limbs, mottled pigmentation, predominantly affecting the trunk and neck, warty hyperkeratotic papules of the palms and soles, small red scaly plaques, and skin atrophy. Histology showed an atrophic epidermis, basal cell lysis and significant colloid body formation in an infant from the family.

Bilateral Idiopathic Multifocal Retinal Pigment Epithelial Detachments: A Case Report and Brief Review of the Literature.

Retinal pigment epithelial detachments (PEDs) result from a disruption at the junction between the basement membrane of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and the innermost part of Bruch's membrane. Serous retinal PEDs, whether singular or multiple, are frequently seen across a broad spectrum of ophthalmic disorders. Additionally, PEDs have been associated with various systemic conditions, including renal, hypertensive, endocrine, and hematologic disorders. Idiopathic PEDs, which occur without an associated underlying condition, are exceedingly rare, with only a few cases reported in the lit
