Adaptive Filtering for the Maternal Respiration Signal Attenuation in the Uterine Electromyogram.

The electrohysterogram (EHG) is the uterine muscle electromyogram recorded at the abdominal surface of pregnant or non-pregnant woman. The maternal respiration electromyographic signal (MR-EMG) is one of the most relevant interferences present in an EHG. Alvarez (Alv) waves are components of the EHG that have been indicated as having the potential for preterm and term birth prediction. The MR-EMG component in the EHG represents an issue, regarding Alv wave application for pregnancy monitoring, for instance, in preterm birth prediction, a subject of great research interest. Therefore, the Alv w…

Intratracheal instillation of respirable particulate matter elicits neuroendocrine activation.

OBJECTIVE: Inhalation of ozone activates central sympathetic-adrenal-medullary and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal stress axes. While airway neural networks are known to communicate noxious stimuli to higher brain centers, it is not known to what extent responses generated from pulmonary airways contribute to neuroendocrine activation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Unlike inhalational exposures that involve the entire respiratory tract, we employed intratracheal (IT) instillations to expose only pulmonary airways to either soluble metal-rich residual oil fly ash (ROFA) or compressor-generated diesel

Gravity steam reprocessing in healthcare facilities for the reuse of N95 respirators.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has significantly impacted the health of millions of people around the world. The shortage of personal protective equipment, including N95 respirators, in hospital facilities has put frontline healthcare professionals at high risk for contracting this virus. AIM: To develop a reproducible and safe N95 respirator reprocessing method that satisfies all presented regulatory standards and that can be directly implemented by hospitals using existing available equipment. METHODS: A non-toxic gravity steam reprocessing method has been developed for th

Improving protection against respirable dust at an underground crusher booth.

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health completed a 15-month study at an underground limestone mine crusher booth that evaluated three research parameters: (1) the effectiveness of a filtration and pressurization system for improving the air quality inside the operator booth, (2) the relative effectiveness of η > 99 and η > 95 experimental prototype filters in the system, and (3) the performance of three different cab pressure monitoring devices. The protection factor was quantified monthly using particle counters in the respirable dust range of 0.3 to 1 μm particle size

Quantitative Study on the Effect of Abnormalities on Respiration-Induced Kidney Movement.

Respiration-induced movement of abdominal organs hampers the targeting accuracy of non-invasive surgical techniques such as focused ultrasound surgery and radiosurgery. Unaccounted organ movement can result in either under dosage or damage to intervening healthy tissues. The respiration-induced movement is known to be significantly large in kidneys; however, the impact of abnormalities such as tumors and cysts on kidney movement is poorly understood. In this study, we quantified the movement patterns of kidneys in 48 normal and 62 affected kidneys (43 calcified cysts, 11 angiomyolipomas, 4 ren…

Contributions of Respiration and Heartbeat to the Pulmonary Blood Flow in the Fontan Circulation.

BACKGROUND: In the Fontan circulation, driving forces with respiration, heartbeat, and lower limb muscle pump are relevant. However, the mechanics of these forces has not been proven, and their effects on the Fontan circulation remain unclear. METHODS: We performed catheter examinations and measured pressure and flow velocity simultaneously in the bilateral pulmonary arteries of 12 Fontan patients 1 year after the operation. The pulmonary pressure and flow velocity data were decomposed into respiratory and heartbeat components by discrete Fourier analysis. We then calculated respiratory and c…

The influence of obturators on the respiration of patients with maxillary defects: a clinical study.

The study evaluated the effects of obturators on respiratory function by analyzing the changes in nasal anatomic structures and physiologic function in maxillectomy patients with and without obturators. Twenty-six patients who underwent maxillectomy were chosen and rehabilitated with obturators by a single maxillofacial prosthodontist. The geometric shape of the nasal cavity, the nasal airway resistance, and the ratio of residual volume to total lung capacity (RV/TLC) were evaluated using acoustic rhinometry, rhinomanometry, and a pulmonary function test apparatus, respectively. All patients w

Distribution of organohalide-respiring bacteria between solid and aqueous phases.

Contemporary microbial monitoring of aquifers relies on groundwater samples to enumerate nonattached cells of interest. One-dimensional column studies quantified the distribution of bacterial cells in solid and the aqueous phases as a function of microbial species, growth substrate availability and porous medium (i.e., Appling soil versus Federal Fine Ottawa sand with 0.75% and 0.01% [w/w] organic carbon, respectively). Without supplied growth substrates, effluent from columns inoculated with the tetrachloroethene- (PCE-) to-ethene-dechlorinating bacterial consortium BDI-SZ containing Dehaloco

Oscillatory patterns of respiration: consequences for the stability and control of cardiac electrophysiology.

Periodic breathing patterns known as Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) are often observed in congestive heart failure. This phenomenon is associated with increased risk of sudden cardiac death, but the mechanism for that outcome has not been exposed. Endocardial electrograms were recorded during spontaneous episodes of CSR and PB in patients in conscious and unconscious states. Analysis exposed a regular bidirectional phase-walk in the relationship between respiration and arterial blood pressure. Recently developed signal processing techniques revealed that respiration also modulates cardiac repolariz…

[An approach to ADL expansion for home pediatric patient with artificial respirator].

A home pediatric patient with artificial respirator has little chance to go out. The primary reasons are as follows: (1) Lack of experience in controlling the situation by the family when artificial respirator related troubles occur. (2) Whenever the patient wants to go out, no caregiver is available for assistance. (3) Going-out is just a psychological burden for the patient and family. (4) Availability of receiving institutions for a patient who needs an emergency care. Hence, a caregiver should improve not only the patient's ADL but also establishes a system that provides a satisfactory car

Subjective response to respirator type: effect of disease status and gender.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of respirator type and user characteristics (eg, health status) on the subjective response to respirator use. METHODS: The subjective responses for multiple domains were evaluated in 104 volunteers performing work tasks in a simulated work environment. Each used a dual cartridge half face mask and a filtering facepiece (N95) respirator. The study population was recruited to include four groups (normal respiratory status, mild asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or chronic rhinitis). Mixed model regression analyses determined the effects of respirator

[Reaction of respiration neurons in the medulla on locus coeruleus irritation by hypoxia].

Effects of locus coeruleus (LC) stimulation on the impulse activity of bulbar respiration neurons in rats were studied on a background of varying hypoxia. Different levels of hypoxia were used as an experiment model for ensuing summation of the LC effect. At the normal atmospheric pressure, LC electrical stimulation had an alleviating and also inhibiting effect on the impulse activity of these medulla neurons; however, the former effect was dominant. During the initial hypoxia simulating the altitude of 4000-5000 m, LC stimulation had a weak alleviating effect. On this level of hypoxia such ef…

Role of respiration in the germination process of the pathogenic mold Aspergillus fumigatus.

Inhalation of resting conidia is usually the first step of a systemic infection caused by the opportunistic fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumi … r dye we detected active mitochondria already at the stage of swollen conidia, which indicates that respiration is an early event during germination. In line with these data, we found that significant oxygen consumption was detectable early during germination, whereas no oxygen consumption was measurable in suspensions of resting conidia. In summary, the pres …

Respirable dust exposure and respiratory health in male Taiwanese steelworkers.

The objective of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the prevalence and determinants of respiratory symptoms and lung function and their association with occupational dust exposure in Taiwanese steelworkers. The study was conducted on an integrated-steel company in Taiwan from March 1989 to February 1990. After excluding workers in the coke ovens and ex-smokers, we performed physical examinations on 1,339 male workers in the iron making and steel making factories. Subjects were interviewed regarding respiratory symptoms using a Chinese version of the American Thoracic Society respira

The hot and the cold: unravelling the variable response of plant respiration to temperature.

When predicting the effects of climate change, global carbon circulation models that include a positive feedback effect of climate warming on the carbon cycle often assume that (1) plant respiration increases exponentially with temperature (with a constant Q10) and (2) that there is no acclimation of respiration to long-term changes in temperature. In this review, we show that these two assumptions are incorrect. While Q10 does not respond systematically to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations, other factors such as temperature, light, and water availability all have the potential to influe…

Solitary chemoreceptor cells in the nasal cavity serve as sentinels of respiration.

Inhalation of irritating substances leads to activation of the trigeminal nerve, triggering protective reflexes that include apnea or sneezing. Receptors for trigeminal irritants are generally assumed to be located exclusively on free nerve endings within the nasal epithelium, requiring that trigeminal irritants diffuse through the junctional barrier at the epithelial surface to activate receptors. We find, in both rats and mice, an extensive population of chemosensory cells that reach the surface of the nasal epithelium and form synaptic contacts with trigeminal afferent nerve fibers. These c

Long-term monitoring of respiration with a mediastinal pressure sensor in dogs.

The ability of an implanted mediastinal pressure sensor to produce a stable respiratory signal that could be used to trigger stimulation of … anubrial placement resulted in a stable signal for 1 year. We conclude that long-term monitoring of respiration with a mediastinal pressure sensor can be successfully performed in dogs, providing an adequate signal for nerve-muscle stimulation. Separation from cardiovascular structures improves signal quality.

The effects of equinatoxin II on respiration - possible mechanism of the toxin lethality.

In rat an intravenous application (i.v.) of a lethal dose of the equinatoxin II (EqT II) provoked a respiratory arrest. It is not known whether the respiratory arrest is a result of a direct actions of the toxin on lung tissue, on neuromuscular junctions or the on the central nervous system. The influences of the toxin on the neuromuscular transmission and on muscular contraction were studied in isolated rat diaphragm. The effect of EqT II on end plate potentials of m. cutaneus pectoris was measured in the frog Rana esculenta. To monitor equinatoxin II effects on the central nervous system of
