Evaluability assessment of social protection services for people experiencing homelessness in Brazil.

This is an Evaluability Assessment (EA) of the Specialized Care for Vulnerable Populations (SEAS) and Specialized Reference Centers for People Experiencing Homelessness (Centro POP) in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. These are social protection services for people in vulnerable situations who use the streets for housing and/or survival. The Thurston and Ramaliu model was employed with the construction of theoretical and logical models and SWOT matrix, using the analysis of legal frameworks, technical documents, on-site visits, and discussion groups with local managers. Questions were developed to comp

Health Care Needs of Young Adults Who Have Experienced Homelessness.

INTRODUCTION: Young adults experiencing homelessness have poorer overall health compared with the general population. However, not much is known about how health care needs may change in the transition from homelessness to supportive housing. This study utilizes the Gelberg-Andersen Behavioral Model for Vulnerable Populations to examine unmet health care needs among young adults currently experiencing homelessness and formerly homeless young adults living in supportive housing. METHODS: This study includes data from 192 young adults who were either residing in a supportive housing program (n=

A Systematic Review of Interventions to Minimize Transportation Barriers Among People with Chronic Diseases.

Transportation is an important social determinant of health. Transportation barriers disproportionately affect the most vulnerable groups of society who carry the highest burden of chronic diseases; therefore, it is critical to identify interventions that improve access to transportation. We synthesized evidence concerning the types and impact of interventions that address transportation to chronic care management. A systematic literature search of peer-reviewed studies that include an intervention with a transportation component was performed using three electronic databases-PubMed, EMBASE, a

Women, e-waste, and technological solutions to climate change.

In this paper, we argue that a crossover class of climate change solutions (which we term "technological solutions") may disproportionately and adversely impact some populations over others. We begin by situating our discussion in the wider climate discourse, particularly with regard to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Basel Convention. We then suggest that many of the most attractive technological solutions to climate change, such as solar energy and electric car batteries, will likely add to the rapidly growing stream of electronic waste ("e-waste"). This e-waste may have nega

Breathing synchrony shapes respiratory disease risk in bottlenose dolphins.

Infectious diseases cause mass mortalities in wildlife populations globally, but the impact of host sociality on the spread of pathogens is often unknown. While host behaviors drive pathogen transmission, these behaviors vary individually which impacts both individual- and population-level disease outcomes. For example, delphinid species are regularly affected by serious respiratory diseases, but a lack of social behavior data means the structure of vulnerability in these ecosystem sentinels is poorly understood. To assess the role of variable social behavior on disease risk empirically, we co

Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) and distribution of malocclusion traits in a population of growing patients attending a public orthodontic service in Perugia (Italy).

AIM: Malocclusions are widespread all over the world with high prevalence values and represent a social vulnerability and health problem because of the important burden of orthodontic treatment for both families and the public health service. The Italian Ministry of Health identified the principles for priority setting in dental care, i.e. patients with IOTN (Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need) 4-5 and those in particular conditions of health or social vulnerability. METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out to assess the IOTN and malocclusion in a population attending the public Orthod…

Psychosocial vulnerability and HIV/AIDS epidemiological situation among people with hearing disabilities in four towns in Cameroon.

The scientific literature about disabled people has stressed their high exposure to social exclusion and marginalization, linked to ways of thinking and representations about them. In the area of HIV/AIDS, this marginalization, which results in higher levels of self-stigmatization and especially in inequalities in prevention, continues to put disabled people at high risk of HIV infection. The current study, conducted with a socioepidemiological and behavioral approach, included 317 people with hearing disabilities, recruited through purposive sampling combined with a snowball approach. Bridging the gap: telemedicine as a solution for HIV care inequities in rural and vulnerable communities.

BACKGROUND: Despite advancements in HIV management, healthcare inequalities continue to exist, especially in rural and populations vulnerable to HIV, where factors such as distance, low income, prejudice, and a shortage of healthcare workers contribute to delayed diagnosis and inadequate care. OBJECTIVE: This commentary explores how telemedicine can close the healthcare disparity gap for HIV patients in rural and vulnerable settings by bringing care closer and decreasing stigma. METHODS: The study analyzed primary sources, such as articles from PubMed, Science Direct, the Web of Science, and

Longitudinal Associations Among Child Maltreatment, Resting Frontal Electroencephalogram Asymmetry, and Adolescent Shyness.

Child maltreatment is linked to distinct neurophysiological patterns and social-emotional vulnerability. Relations among maltreatment, relative resting frontal alpha asymmetry, shyness, and psychopathology were examined prospectively. Adolescent girls (age 14-16) who experienced child maltreatment (N = 55) were compared to nonmaltreated controls (N = 25), and returned for 6- and 12-month follow-ups. Among participants exhibiting relative right frontal asymmetry, maltreated adolescents reported higher shyness than controls at Time 1. Low-stable and high-stable shyness trajectories were observed

Social and Familial Factors in the Course of Bipolar Disorder: Basic Processes and Relevant Interventions.

This article reviews the role of social factors, notably life events and family relationships, in the course of bipolar illness in adults and youth. We also discuss psychological variables that help explain the vulnerability of bipolar patients to social environments, including personality factors (e.g., neuroticism), reward sensitivity, and difficulty with the accurate perception of facial emotions. Bipolar patients are highly sensitive to reward, and excessive goal pursuit after goal-attainment events may be one pathway to mania. Negative life events predict depressive symptoms, as do levels

Social anxiety and eating disorder comorbidity: the role of negative social evaluation fears.

Social anxiety and eating disorders are highly comorbid. However, it is unknown how specific domains of social anxiety relate to disordered eating. We provide data on these relationships and investigate social appearance anxiety and fear of negative evaluation as potential vulnerabilities linking social anxiety with disordered eating. Specifically, we examined five domains of social anxiety: Social interaction anxiety, fear of scrutiny, fear of positive evaluation, fear of negative evaluation, and social appearance anxiety. Results indicated that social appearance anxiety predicted body dissat

Childhood maltreatment, vulnerability characteristics and adult incident common mental disorders: 3-year longitudinal data among >10,000 adults in the general population.

Childhood maltreatment (CM) is a strong predictor of incident (first-onset and recurrent) mental disorders in adulthood. However, less is known about underlying mechanisms and moderators of these associations. This study examines to what extent vulnerability characteristics (low social support, negative life events, parental psychopathology, neuroticism, history and comorbidity of mental and physical health) contribute to the impact of CM on adult psychopathology. Data from two general population cohorts - the first and second Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Studies - were combi

[The aetiopathogenesis of auditory hallucinations in psychosis].

INTRODUCTION: Auditory hallucinations is one of the core symptoms of psychosis. Two main different approaches have been made in recent years in order to understand this perceptual abnormality. The psycho-social approaches is trying to explain auditory hallucinations as a common human phenomenon that only environmental factors cause them to be pathological. It propose psychotherapeutic techniques based on the cognitive model, paying special attention to the emotional component. The neurobiological approach, specially with neuroimaging techniques, is giving us new information about abnormal acti

The Relevance of Emotion Regulation in Explaining Why Social Exclusion Triggers Paranoia in Individuals at Clinical High Risk of Psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Vulnerability-stress models postulate that social stress triggers psychotic episodes in vulnerable individuals. However, experimental evidence for the proposed causal pathway is scarce and the translating mechanisms are insufficiently understood. The study assessed the impact of social exclusion on paranoid beliefs in a quasi-experimental design and investigated the role of emotion regulation (ER) as a vulnerability indicator and emotional responses as a putative translating mechanism. METHODS: Participants fulfilling criteria for clinical high risk of psychosis (CHR, n = 25), con

Predictors and moderators of biopsychological social stress responses following brief self-compassion meditation training.

Arch et al. (2014) demonstrated that brief self-compassion meditation training (SCT) dampened sympathetic (salivary alpha-amylase) and subjective anxiety responses to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST), relative to attention and no-instruction control conditions. The present study examined baseline predictors and moderators of these SCT intervention effects. Baseline characteristics included two stress vulnerability traits (social anxiety and rumination) and two potential resiliency traits (non-attachment and self-compassion). We investigated how these traits moderated the effects of SCT on r

When Adverse Experiences Influence the Interpretation of Ourselves, Others and the World: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Maladaptive Schemas in Victims of Violence.

PURPOSE: Early maladaptive schemas (EMS) are dysfunctional emotional and cognitive patterns formed in childhood due to negative experiences that hinder basic psychological needs. These schemas shape beliefs about oneself, others and the world, influencing relationships and overall functioning. This study aims to identify common EMS among victims of violence and their associations with specific types of abuse, offering insight into underlying beliefs that may contribute to repeated victimization. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic review of observational studies pu

The behaviour of TB patients in East Lombok through a health belief model approach.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a global health problem, including in Indonesia, with East Lombok as a high prevalence region. Although control programmes have been implemented, TB cases remain high. Patient behaviours that are less supportive of treatment, such as non-compliance and social stigma, pose a challenge to TB control efforts in this area. This study aims to explore the behaviour of people with tuberculosis (TB) in East Lombok using the Health Belief Model (HBM) approach. PARTICIPANTS AND PROCEDURE: The method applied was a cross-sectional design, involving 112 respondents with TB
