The concentrations of inorganic phosphates, bicarbonate, urea and pH in saliva were measured.

BACKGROUND: The gastroesophageal reflux disease, which has become highly and increasingly incident, may be manifested by typical (pyrosis and regurgitation) and atypical (pulmonary, otorhinolaryngological and buccal) symptoms.
AIM: To analyze alterations in the oral cavity patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease.
METHODS: One hundred patients were studied being 50 gastroesophageal reflux disease patients (group 1) and 50 controls (group 2). All patients were submitted to an oral clinical exam and specific survey. Patients in group 1 were submitted to upper endoscopy, manometry and esop

Maintaining teeth in their corrected positions following orthodontic treatment can be extremely challenging. Teeth have a tendency to move back towards the original malocclusion as a result of periodontal, gingival, occlusal and growth related factors. However, tooth movement can also occur as a result of normal age changes. Because orthodontics is unable to predict which patients are at risk of relapse, those which will remain stable and the extent of relapse that will occur in the long-term, clinicians need to treat all patients as if they have a high potential to relapse. To reduce this ris

Analyzing the dynamics of muscle activation patterns and joint range of motion is essential to understanding human movement during complex tasks such as tooth brushing Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). In individuals with neuromotor impairments, accurate assessment of upper limb motor patterns plays a critical role in rehabilitation, supporting the identification of compensatory strategies and informing clinical interventions. This study presents the validation of a previously developed novel, low-cost, wearable, and portable multimodal prototype that integrates inertial measurement units (IM

The determination of age is an important step in defining the life history traits of individuals and populations. Age determination of odontocetes is mainly based on counting annual growth layer groups in the teeth. However, this useful method is always invasive, requiring the cutting of at least one tooth, and sometimes the results are difficult to interpret. Based on the concept that bone matrix is constantly deposited throughout life, we analysed the bone mineral density of the arm and forearm of a series of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus, Montagu 1821) stranded along the Italian c

INTRODUCTION: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and bile reflux disease (BRD) are two distinct conditions that may affect oral health through different mechanisms. This study investigated whether these reflux types lead to differing oral and dental outcomes in pediatric patients, aiming to inform clinical practice and promote interdisciplinary care.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with BRD or GERD between 2017 and 2020 were included. Clinical oral examinations, salivary analyses, and questionnaires on potential etiological factors for erosive tooth wear (ETW) were conducted. Oral health was …

BACKGROUND: Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is widely used in pediatric dentistry due to its fluoride-releasing properties and strong adhesion to tooth structure. However, enhancing its antimicrobial efficacy remains a challenge. Incorporating silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has been proposed as a solution to increase the antimicrobial properties of GIC without compromising its mechanical strength.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study investigated the effects of integrating varying concentrations of AgNPs into GIC on its antimicrobial efficacy against common oral pathogens and its mechanical properties.

Dental manifestations of the mild, transient osteopetrosis in the rat mutation microphthalmia blanc (mib) were examined. Eruption of all teeth was delayed in mib rats compared to normal littermates. The delays ranged from 5 days for incisors to 3 and 2 days for the first and second molars. Normal rats had straight incisors in the sagittal plane that exhibited signs of wear, but in mib littermates the incisors were maloccluded, distorted, and showed no signs of wear. Radiographic and histological examination of the dentition of 1- and 4-week-old rats revealed that the apical end of incisors in

OBJECTIVE: Bruxism is repetitive masticatory muscle activity occurring during sleep or wakefulness. Once considered purely harmful, it is now recognized as having both risk (e.g., tooth wear, TMD) and protective roles (e.g., against sleep apnea, reflux). This study evaluated Finnish dental students' understanding of modern bruxism concepts and management.
METHODS: A 17-question survey was sent to all Finnish dental students (n = 1000), with 220 responses analyzed using SPSS (version 28) via chi-square and Spearman correlation tests.
RESULTS: Knowledge improved with study progression (p < .00…

Bruxism is one of the most prevalent, complex, and destructive dental functional disorders. It is difficult to identify, especially in its early stages, because most patients are unaware of the habit. Although many factors contribute to the etiology of the disorder, there is little valid and reliable clinical research to assure a correct diagnosis. The effects of bruxism are multiple and diverse and include temporomandibular joint pain and dysfunction, head and neck pain, tooth wear, mobility, erosion, abrasion, loss of and damage to supporting structures, muscle pain and spasm, disturbance of…

Wearing complete dentures may have adverse effects on the health of both the oral and the denture-supporting tissues. This article is a review of selected literature on the sequelae of treatment with complete dentures in the specific areas of residual ridge resorption, mucosal reactions, burning mouth syndrome, temporomandibular disorders, and patient satisfaction. Recent literature found with a Medline search from 1952 to 1996 is included in this review. Residual ridge resorption is an inevitable consequence of tooth loss and denture wearing, with no dominant causative factor having been foun

The Upper Cretaceous Winton Formation of Queensland, Australia, has produced several partial sauropod skeletons, but cranial remains-including teeth-remain rare. Herein, we present the first description of sauropod teeth from this formation, based on specimens from three separate sites. An isolated tooth and a dentary fragment from the Diamantinasaurus matildae type locality are considered to be referable to that titanosaurian taxon. A single tooth from the D. matildae referred specimen site is similarly regarded as being part of that individual. Seventeen teeth from a new site that are morpho

BACKGROUND: Composite resins are widely used as the material of choice for definitive restorations due to their ability to integrate functional and aesthetic aspects in dental rehabilitation. Recently, one-shade composite resins have been introduced to simplify the clinical workflow.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the clinical performance of a "chameleon effect" composite resin with that of a multi-shade composite resin in non-carious cervical lesions after 36 months of follow-up.
METHODS: This study was a randomized, controlled, double-blind clinical trial with an equivalence desig

INTRODUCTION: Non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) have different aetiologies and the management of NCCLs varies on a range of factors that affects intervention strategy. The aim of this study was to elicit information from in-depth interviews with dentists to explore and identify the factors in relationship to decision to restore and management of three levels of severity of NCCLs based on clinical photos and different clinical scenarios.

BACKGROUND: The authors conducted a study to quantify the reasons for restoring noncarious tooth defects (NCTDs) by dentists in The Dental Practice-Based Research Network (DPBRN) and to assess the tooth, patient and dentist characteristics associated with those reasons.
METHODS: Data were collected by 178 DPBRN dentists regarding the placement of 1,301 consecutive restorations owing to NCTDs. Information gathered included the main clinical reason, other than dental caries, for restoration of previously unrestored permanent tooth surfaces; characteristics of patients who received treatment; de

INTRODUCTION: Full mouth rehabilitation (FMR) addresses complex dental issues like tooth wear, cosmetic concerns, and loss of occlusal stability, enhancing both function and aesthetics. This study aimed to evaluate the success and survival of tooth-supported FMR treatments and identify common causes of treatment failure.
METHODOLOGY: A retrospective analysis of 60 patients who underwent FMR between 2019 and 2021 was conducted. Data were collected from the Dental Information Archiving Software (DIAS) and analyzed using modified USPHS criteria, covering parameters like postoperative sensitivity…
