Involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, particularly meningitis, is the most severe form of tuberculous infection. Parenchymal CNS involvement can occur in the form of tuberculoma or, more rarely, abscess. Although surgery was initially advocated as the mainstay of therapy, more recent evidence suggests that parenchymal forms of CNS tuberculosis can be cured with medical treatment alone. Also, damage of the spinal cord, roots, and spine can occur in the form of spinal meningitis, radiculomyelitis, spondylitis, or spinal cord infarction.

Central nervous system (CNS) tuberculosis mainly manifests as tuberculous meningitis and intracranial tuberculosis; intramedullary tuberculosis is uncommon. Scrub typhus is an acute naturally occurring infectious disease caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi. CNS tuberculoma following typhus is rare. The present study described a 60-year-old man with high fever, muscle soreness, yellowish skin and sclera and hepatosplenomegaly. At first, the patient was diagnosed with scrub typhus, after treatment with doxycycline he recovered completely. However, half a month after discharge, the patient experienc

BACKGROUND: Osteoarticular tuberculosis represents 9-20% of extrapulmonary forms and spinal tuberculosis is its most common form.
CLINICAL CASES: We present three cases of tuberculous spondylitis in patients aged 22, 36 and 68 years, with 8, 6 and 6 months of evolution and with involvement of L5-S1, T7-T8 and T5-T6, respectively. The two younger patients had disc involvement, and in the first case a pyogenic abscess was initially suspected. Local pain was the initial symptom and the 2 older patients developed inability to walk and urinary and fecal incontinence. The patients received a comple

OBJECTIVE: Cervical tubercular disease (CTB) is a rare pathology and constitutes 3-5% of all spinal TB. It includes atlantoaxial TB and sub-axial TB. As the literature evidence on this subject is scarce, majority of issues concerning CTB are still controversial. The current narrative review comprehensively discusses the various aspects related to CTB. Literature search: An elaborate search was made using keywords cervical tuberculosis, atlantoaxial tuberculosis, sub-axial tuberculosis, and cervico-thoracic tuberculosis, on pubmed and google (scholar.google.com) databases on 2 December 2020. BACKGROUND: Most patients affected by spinal tuberculosis can be successfully treated conservatively with chemotherapy, external bracing and prolonged rest. Nevertheless, kyphotic deformity, spinal instability and neurological deficit remain a common complication associated with conservative approach.
AIM: To illustrate different indications and treatment modalities for tuberculous spondylodiscitis, focusing on the role of surgery as an adjuvant of effective chemotherapy in the management of selected patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Various early and late surgical procedures are recommended

INTRODUCTION: South Africa has one of the top ten tuberculosis burdens in the world, only lagging behind countries with significantly larger populations. Increased awareness of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, specifically spinal tuberculosis, is necessary, because of the HIV epidemic.
CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes the case of a 9-year-old male patient who was suspected of having multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis, based on failure to recover clinically and radiologically after 6 months on first-line anti-tuberculosis treatment. Pus samples were sent to an accredited academic labor

A patient with spinal tuberculosis and subclinical adrenal tuberculosis who developed acute Addisonian crisis on starting anti-tuberculosis therapy including rifampicin is reported. The possibility that many patients with tuberculosis have adrenal involvement with limited hormonal reserve and that they may develop incipient adrenal failure on commencing treatment is discussed.

Spinal intramedullary tuberculoma remains a very rare entity of central nervous system tuberculosis. This is the same with the coexistence of spinal intramedullary and intracranial tuberculomas that remains extremely rare with less than 20 cases reported at present. Authors describe this uncommon case by analyzing a 65-year-old female patient who had past history of kidney transplantation due to stage 5 chronic kidney disease and pulmonary tuberculosis on medication. The patient experiences progressive paraplegia and numbness on both lower extremities. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a

Acid-fast bacillus (AFB) spinal osteomyelitis in a patient with AIDS is often presumed to be caused by reactivated Mycobacterium tuberculosis. However, other AFB pathogens can mimic M. tuberculosis and, to ensure appropriate and adequate therapy, should be considered by clinicians. We present a case of aggressive spinal osteomyelitis caused by Mycobacterium heckeshornense in an AIDS patient; a review of the literature is also included.

BACKGROUND: Spinal tuberculosis (Pott's disease) is a rare form of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis, often presenting with nonspecific symptoms and posing diagnostic challenges, especially in resource-limited settings. While microbiological confirmation is the gold standard, it is often unavailable in district hospitals.
CASE PRESENTATION: I report the case of a previously healthy 28-year-old Black female individual who presented with a 3-week history of progressive lower back pain, fatigue, and functional impairment but without pulmonary symptoms or known tuberculosis contacts. Examination revea

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Spondylitis tuberculosis is a spinal infection characterized by bone destruction, fracture, abscess, and resulting in deformity (kyphosis and gibbus formation). Therefore, early diagnosis and management of spondylitis tuberculosis have special importance in preventing complications. Surgery is reserved for progressive deformity or where the neurological deficit is not improved by anti-tubercular treatment. The spine can be approached anteriorly or posteriorly in a minimally invasive way. We reviewed the evaluation of clinical outcome, laboratory findings, and radio

CASE HISTORY: We present a case of spinal tuberculosis in a 4-year-old girl that grounds severe vertebral destruction involving four cervical vertebrae and a large abscess with retropharyngeal expansion. Presenting symptoms were neck and right arm pain, torticollis and weakness of the right arm. We drained the abscess and removed the infected bone and reconstructed the cervical spine with a fibular allograft. The neurological deficits were recovered and the torticollis was straightened up.
CONCLUSION: We emphasize the value of early diagnosis of spinal tuberculosis and early radical surgery w

OBJECTIVE: With the progress of spinal tuberculosis treatment theory and surgical tools, how to further improve the surgical efficacy, reduce surgical trauma, and increase safety in multi-segmental spinal tuberculosis is still controversial. Through the improvement of traditional posterior surgery, we explored the posterior Detour method to preserve bilateral lamina in the treatment of multi-segment thoracolumbar tuberculosis and followed up on its clinical efficacy and imaging results to observe its clinical value and further evaluate its effectiveness and safety.
METHODS: Between January 20

Tuberculosis can present with diverse manifestations, particularly in immunocompromised hosts. Although cold abscesses can complicate spinal tuberculosis, subcutaneous abscesses due to tuberculosis are considerably uncommon and, unlike cold abscesses, necessitate surgical drainage.1 We present an extremely rare case of disseminated tuberculosis in a patient with subcutaneous involvement mimicking cellulitis.

A total of 477 patients admitted to hospital for tuberculous spondylitis were examined. Further studies revealed that the process in the vertebral column was regarded as degenerative and dystrophic changes in 140 patients, nonspecific osteomyelitis in 94, and cancer in 22. The basis of diagnostic errors was the similarity of some clinical and X-ray manifestations and the pathomorphosis of tuberculous spondylitis, older patients, the wide use of antibiotics, which changes the clinical course of spinal tuberculosis. The causes of great difficulties in the differential diagnosis of tuberculous sp
