Differential Take-Up of Supplemental Security Income in Florida for Very Low Birth Weight Infants.

OBJECTIVE: Supplemental Security Income (SSI) eligibility is automatically granted for the subset of very low birth weight (VLBW) infants born below 1200 g. We estimated the effects of automatic eligibility on SSI take-up among VLBW infants near the cutoff, both overall and for key subgroups. METHODS: We analyzed Florida birth certificates merged with Social Security Administration records from 1990 to 2015. Our sample included 21 606 infants with gestational age under 32 weeks and birth weight between 1000 to 1400 g. Using a regression discontinuity approach, we tested whether SSI take-up by

Improvement in Domestic Violence and Aggression in Comorbid ADHD and Conduct Disorder Following Methylphenidate Initiation: A Case Report.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder (CD) are diagnoses that are frequently comorbid. CD is characterised by persistent dissocial, aggressive, and defiant behaviors that defy age-appropriate expectations. This is the case of a 15-year-old male adoptee referred to Tier 3 Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) for severe aggression, impulsivity, and domestic violence. The patient exhibited coercive control toward his mother, physical violence involving weapons, and property damage, necessitating police involvement and risking family placement breakdown

A 25 year nationwide analysis of mortality trends from cerebrovascular diseases in patients with lung cancer (1999-2023).

INTRODUCTION: The two leading causes of death worldwide are lung cancer and cerebrovascular disease (CVD). Due to complications related to the disease and therapy, patients with lung cancer are much more likely to have a stroke, particularly within 2 years after diagnosis. Results are still poor despite medical advancements, underscoring the necessity of comprehensive prevention and care. METHODS: ICD-10 codes for lung cancer (C34) and cerebrovascular illness (I60-I69) were used to evaluate mortality data from CDC WONDER (1999-2023). When both illnesses were listed on death certificates, deat

A Holistic Method for Superquadric Fitting Using Unsupervised Clustering Analysis.

This work presents a novel method for fitting superquadrics to point clouds under the contamination of noise and outliers, which has many applications for shape modeling across diverse fields. Unlike prior approaches that either exclusively focus on fitting rigid or deformable superquadrics, or suffer from robustness and numerical instability issues, our method redefines the problem from a new unsupervised clustering perspective, enabling the holistic fitting of both rigid and deformable superquadrics within a unified framework. Central to our approach is a stable optimization function inspire

Enhancing health system governance and citizen empowerment in Bhutan through the Bhutan Vaccine System (BVS): a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: The Bhutan Vaccine System (BVS) was developed for the COVID-19 vaccination and later expanded to include influenza and HPV vaccinations. It represents a key national innovation in health system transformation, linking vaccination delivery with citizen engagement. This study assessed how the BVS strengthened vaccination monitoring, governance processes, and citizen empowerment in Bhutan. METHODS: We used a convergent mixed-methods design integrating secondary analysis of BVS data with qualitative interviews. Quantitative data from the BVS were analysed by age, sex, and district. Qu

Variations in Eclampsia Risk Across Asian Origin Groups in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: Eclampsia is a leading contributor of severe maternal morbidity in the United States. Although the rates of severe maternal morbidity for Asian and non-Hispanic White birthing people are similar, variations in eclampsia risk across Asian origin groups have not been adequately studied. METHODS: A cross-sectional study using public access Natality Files data (2018-2021). The exposure was maternal race (non-Hispanic White or Asian), and nativity (foreign- or US-born), with foreign-born non-Hispanic White birthing people defined as the reference group. The outcome was eclampsia. Adjus

Associations Between State Alcohol Policy Environment and Infant and Maternal Outcomes: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: The Alcohol Policy Scale, a measure of the broader alcohol policy environment in the U.S., consistently relates to improved health outcomes. Whether the Alcohol Policy Scale identifies policy environments that might reduce adverse effects from drinking during pregnancy is unknown. METHODS: Alcohol Policy Scale total composite score and Alcohol Policy Scale consumption-oriented and Alcohol Policy Scale driving-oriented subscale data were combined with outcome data from birth certificates and commercial insurance claims to examine the associations between the Alcohol Policy Scale

Race, ethnicity, and nativity differences in pregnancy and birth outcomes among Medicaid-enrolled women with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Women with disabilities have worse maternal health outcomes than women without disabilities, but we have a limited understanding of other disparities they face. OBJECTIVE: Investigate whether differences in pregnancy and birth outcomes vary by race, ethnicity, and nativity among low-income women with disabilities. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 24,631 live births to Medicaid-enrolled women with disabilities in Texas. We used linked administrative claims with birth certificate data to examine outcomes, including cesarean delivery, severe maternal morbidity (

A Retrospective Chart Review of Uninsured Encounters in a Primary Care Hospital in Japan.

Introduction Lack of health insurance is known to delay care-seeking and contribute to preventable morbidity. Although Japan has established a universal health insurance system, more than 10% of households have unpaid insurance premiums, and approximately 2.5% possess insurance certificates with restricted or no validity. Under these circumstances, preventable deaths attributable to delayed medical care for financial reasons have been reported. Individuals facing unstable employment or job loss are particularly vulnerable to premium non-payment, even when willingness to pay exists. The actual

Policy to practice: Translating "non-directive" pre-abortion counselling from legal stipulation to healthcare encounters.

BackgroundThe liberalisation of abortion law does not necessarily translate into quality services. The South African Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act includes the requirement of non-mandatory and non-directive pre-abortion counselling. However, pre-abortion counselling in public abortion clinics is often directive, coercive and, at times, anti-abortion. Objectives: We reflect on our attempts to ensure that the legislative requirement of "non-directive" pre-abortion counselling is realised in public termination of pregnancy clinics through the nurses' participation in an in-service aborti

Breast cancer mortality by age and race and/or ethnicity across counties in the United States, 2000-2019.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated county-level variations in racial and/or ethnic disparities in breast cancer mortality rates across the United States over a 20-year period. METHODS: Validated small-area estimation models were used to calculate breast cancer mortality rates by age and race and/or ethnicity among females across all United States counties from 2000 to 2019. The estimates were corrected for misreporting of race and/or ethnicity on death certificates and age-standardized to the 2010 United States Census. RESULTS: Age-standardized national breast cancer mortality rates declined between 2

Risk of bladder cancer among male participants reporting nocturia in the Cancer Prevention Study-II.

BACKGROUND: It is believed that contact of the urothelial lining to carcinogens induces mutations that lead to cancer. Nocturia, waking up at night to urinate, may void carcinogens and reduce risk of bladder cancer. METHODS: The Cancer Prevention Study-II Nutrition Cohort is a prospective study of cancer incidence that enrolled participants in 1992 with biennial follow-up beginning in 1997. Cases were ascertained through state cancer registry, medical record verification, or death certificate. Cox models were used to calculate hazard ratios(HR) and 95% confidence intervals(95%CI) for the asso

Less Restrictive Medicaid Policies for Direct-Acting Antiviral Access Are Associated With Greater Declines in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Deaths.

BACKGROUND: In the United States (US), chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) is the leading cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) cure HCV and reduce HCC risk, but Medicaid DAA coverage varies across states. AIM: We assessed whether Medicaid DAA access was associated with trends in HCC-related deaths. METHODS: We analyzed CDC WONDER death certificate data (1999-2023) to assess HCC-related mortality. US states were grouped based on Medicaid DAA prior authorization restrictions using the Hepatitis C: State of Medicaid Access scoring system: A+/A (n = 28), B (n = 11

Population-based cohort study of modifiable risk factors for dementia and Alzheimer disease mortality in Spain.

BACKGROUND: Although many modifiable factors are linked to dementia risk, their association with dementia and Alzheimer disease (AD) mortality remains unclear. We aimed to identify late-life modifiable factors associated with these outcomes and assess sex differences. METHODS: In the population-based Neurological Disorders in Central Spain (NEDICES) cohort, we followed 3085 older adults enrolled in 1994-1995 through 2017. We examined 13 modifiable factors measured at study entry. Dementia and AD deaths were defined by the underlying cause recorded on death certificates. Fine-Gray competing ri

Factors influencing the diagnostic basis in pancreatic cancer. A study within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Substantial differences have been reported in risk estimates for etiologic factors of pancreatic cancer among subjects with different degrees of diagnostic certainty. The aim of the study was to assess the influence of some personal and social characteristics on the diagnostic basis in individuals with pancreatic cancer. METHODS: We analyzed 393 participants from the EPIC cohort with a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and information on the basis of diagnosis. Two main groups of cases were compared: one in which microscopic confirmation (MC) was available to diagnose pancre

United States-Mexico Border Disparities in Alcoholic Liver Disease Mortality: A Cross-Sectional Analysis 1999-2020.

BACKGROUND: US-Mexico (US-MX) border regions are impacted by socioeconomic disadvantages. Alcohol use disorder remains widely prevalent in US-MX border regions, which may increase the risk of alcoholic liver disease (ALD). GOALS: We aimed to characterize ALD mortality trends in border regions compared to non-border regions from 1999 to 2020 in the United States (US). METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis using the CDC repository. We queried death certificates to find ALD-related deaths from 1999 to 2020, which included demographic information such as gender, race/ethnicity, and ar
