Comparative Gene Expression Analysis of Epithelioid Pleural and Peritoneal Mesothelioma.

Background/Objectives: Pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma (PL and PE) are aggressive diseases, accounting for 68.0-92.4% and 6.9-24.1% of all cases. To improve both diagnosis and management of these patients, a deeper knowledge and characterization of the molecular background are necessary. Although molecular profiling of PL has been largely investigated in recent years, much less is known about the genomic landscape of PE, due to its rarity. Here, we aim to compare gene expression profiling of pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma to underline main differences and to identify new potential his

Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Presenting as Peritoneal Lymphomatosis: A Case Report.

Peritoneal lymphomatosis (PL) is an uncommon form of extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), characterized by the spread of lymphoma cells within the peritoneum. We present a case involving a woman, age 43 years, diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma that infiltrated the peritoneum and omentum and was accompanied by ascites and pleural effusion. Imaging revealed diffuse thickening of the peritoneum and omentum, mesenteric lymphadenopathy, and thickening of the jejunum wall. Cytology from the ascites and pleural fluid did not show malignant cells. The diagnosis was confirmed through histo

Laparoscopic-Assisted Seldinger Technique for Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter Insertion.

The management of kidney failure has advanced considerably, with peritoneal dialysis (PD) established as a reliable treatment option that uses the peritoneal membrane to remove excess fluid and toxins. PD has shown particular benefits in the initial stages of treatment, potentially leading to better outcomes compared to hemodialysis. Successful PD, however, depends heavily on the correct placement of the PD catheter. This study presents a protocol to perform the laparoscopic-assisted Seldinger technique (LAST) for peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion, highlighting a combination of the Seldin

Scaling Peritoneal Dialysis: Center Effects Thresholds in US Facilities.

KEY POINTS: Facilities with large peritoneal dialysis programs (>20 patients) rose from 22.9% to 29%, with very large programs (>50) nearly doubling from 3.5% to 5.9%. Despite policy support, only 44.6% of facilities offered peritoneal dialysis by 2021, indicating barriers remain to widespread adoption. BACKGROUND: Center effects in peritoneal dialysis (PD) refer to how facility patient volume affects outcomes, with larger centers typically demonstrating better patient results. Recent US policy changes have promoted PD utilization, but it remains unclear how this growth has affected center-le

Development and validation of a prognostic nomogram for patients with malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.

BACKGROUND: Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma(MPM) is a highly aggressive malignant tumor that originates from peritoneal mesothelial cells. Due to the rarity of MPM, there are few survival prediction models specifically for visualization of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a nomogram for the overall survival of MPM based on the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database and the data of Cangzhou People's Hospital were used for external verification. METHODS: Patients screened from the SEER database were divided into a training group a

Back to the future: a review of peritoneal dialysis for acute kidney injury.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Acute kidney injury requiring dialysis (AKI-D) is a growing global health problem with high mortality. This perspective re-evaluates the role of acute peritoneal dialysis in the modern management of AKI-D, challenging the prevailing extracorporeal paradigm and highlighting its potential in various clinical scenarios. RECENT FINDINGS: We review the current evidence comparing peritoneal dialysis to other renal replacement therapies, demonstrating comparable outcomes in many cases. We discuss the advantages of peritoneal dialysis, including hemodynamic stability, avoidance of

Equations for estimating resting energy expenditure in patients on peritoneal dialysis.

BACKGROUND: In peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, determining energy expenditure is essential for recommending energy intake in nutrition management. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop and validate a resting energy expenditure (REE) equation for patients with PD and compare it to previously available REE equations in dialysis patients. DESIGN: This cross-sectional study enrolled 200 patients with PD from two hospitals in Beijing, China. Stepwise linear regression analysis was used to derive a new REE equation (eREE-PD) based on actual REE (aREE) measured using indirect calorimetry (IC) in the de

The Effect of Splenectomy on Postoperative Morbidity and Survival in Patients with Peritoneal Carcinomatosis.

Background/Objectives: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) are effective treatment modalities for patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC), though splenectomy is frequently required and its impact on outcomes remains unclear. Previous studies have evaluated splenectomy as a binary variable without distinguishing surgical indication, potentially obscuring important prognostic differences. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the impact of splenectomy on postoperative morbidity and survival in patients undergoing CRS + HIPEC. Methods: A ret

Incidental Abdominal Pseudocyst in a Patient on Peritoneal Dialysis: A Case Report.

We report an intriguing case of an incidental abdominal pseudocyst in a patient undergoing long-term peritoneal dialysis. Although pseudocysts are rare, they represent a significant complication in peritoneal dialysis patients, often arising secondary to chronic peritoneal inflammation, peritonitis episodes, or catheter-related factors. In this case, the pseudocyst was an incidental finding on imaging, with no immediate symptoms but potential implications for dialysis efficacy and future intra-abdominal complications. The case underscores the importance of vigilant imaging assessment and multi…

Peritoneal Dialysis -Associated Fibrosis: Emerging Mechanisms and Therapeutic Opportunities.

Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) requires a healthy and functional peritoneal membrane for adequate ultrafiltration and fluid balance, making it a vital treatment for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The spectrum of PD-associated peritoneal fibrosis encompasses a diverse range of collective mechanisms: peritoneal fibrogenesis, epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT), peritonitis, angiogenesis, sub-mesothelial immune cells infiltration, and collagen deposition in the sub-mesothelial compact zone of the membrane that accompany deteriorating membrane function. In this narrative review, we…

Recurrent Malignant Pericardial Effusion Management: The Pericardio-Peritoneal Window.

Introduction: Malignant pericardial effusion (MPE) represents a relatively rare complication in various types of solid tumors. Its management is often challenging. One solution can be represented by surgical approaches, including a pericardio-peritoneal window (PPW), which allows draining the fluid into the abdominal cavity. The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy and long-term outcomes of the PPW procedure as a definitive therapeutic strategy for MPE. Materials and methods: We retrospectively and prospectively observed pre-, peri-, and postoperative data of patients undergoing pe
