A facile foaming-polymerization strategy to prepare 3D MnO2 modified biochar-based porous hydrogels for efficient removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II).

A novel three dimensional MnO2 modified biochar-based porous hydrogel (MBCG) was fabricated to overcome the low sorption capacity and difficulty in solid-liquid separation of biochar (BC) for Cd(II) and Pb(II) removal. BC was initially modified by a rapid redox reaction between KMnO4 and Mn(II) acetate, and then incorporated into a polyacrylamide gel network via a rapid and facile free-radical polymerization. A foaming method was deliberately introduced during the fabrication to establish interpenetrated porous structure inside the network. Various characterizations were employed to examine th

Macroporous hydrogels derived from aqueous dynamic phase separation.

A method to generate injectable macroporous hydrogels based on partitioning of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and high viscous polysaccharides is presented. Step growth polymerization of PEG was used to initiate a phase separation and the formation of a connected macroporous network with tunable dimensions. The possibilities and physical properties of this new category of materials were examined, and then applied to address some challenges in neural engineering. First, non-degradable macroporous gels were shown to support rapid neurite extension from encapsulated dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) with unp

Low-melt bioactive glass-reinforced 3D printing akermanite porous cages with highly improved mechanical properties for lumbar spinal fusion.

Although great strides have been made in medical technology, low back/neck pain and intervertebral disc degeneration initiated from disc degenerative disease remains a clinical challenge. Within the field of regenerative medicine therapy, we have sought to improve the biomechanical transformation of spinal fusion procedures conducted using biodegradable porous implants. Specifically, we have focused on developing mechanically strong bioceramic cages for spinal fusion and functional recovery. Herein, we fabricated the akermanite (AKE) ceramic-based porous cages using low-melting bioactive glass

Preparation, structural characterisation and release study of novel hybrid microspheres entrapping nanoselenium, produced by green synthesis.

The main goal of this study was to synthesise and characterise different formulations based on alginate and alginate/chitosan microspheres containing nanoselenium (nano-Se) for controlled delivery applications. Nanosize elemental selenium was produced by using probiotic yogurt bacteria (Lactobacillus casei) in a fermentation procedure. The structural and morphological characterisation of the microspheres was performed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. FTIR and XRD pattern indicated that was an effective cross-linking

Functionalization of porous BCP scaffold by generating cell-derived extracellular matrix from rat bone marrow stem cells culture for bone tissue engineering.

The potential of decellularized cell-derived extracellular matrix (ECM) deposited on biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) scaffold for bone tissue engineering was investigated. Rat derived bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells were cultured on porous BCP scaffolds for 3 weeks and decellularized with two different methods (freeze-thaw [F/T] or sodium dodecyl sulfate [SDS]). The decellularized ECM deposited scaffolds (dECM-BCP) were characterized through scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, and confocal microscopy. The efficiency of decellularization was evaluated by quan

Survivorship of a Porous Tantalum Monoblock Acetabular Component in Primary Hip Arthroplasty With a Mean Follow-Up of 18 Years.

BACKGROUND: The use of porous tantalum for the acetabular component in primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) has demonstrated excellent short-term and midterm results. However, long-term data are scarce. The purpose of this prospective study is to report the long-term clinical and radiologic outcome following use of an uncemented porous tantalum acetabular component in primary THA with a minimum follow-up of 17.5 years, in a previously studied cohort of patients. METHODS: We prospectively followed 128 consecutive primary THAs in 140 patients, between November 1997 and June 1999. A press-fit po

Physical and mechanical properties of cross-linked type I collagen scaffolds derived from bovine, porcine, and ovine tendons.

Collagen scaffolds are often utilized in tissue engineering applications where their performance depends on physical and mechanical properties. This study investigated the effects of collagen source (bovine, porcine, and ovine tendon) on properties of collagen sponge scaffolds cross-linked with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC)/N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS). Scaffolds were tested for tensile and compressive properties, stability (resistance to enzymatic degradation), pore size, and swelling ratio. No significant differences in tensile modulus were observed, but ovine scaffolds

In vitro study on the degradation of lithium-doped hydroxyapatite for bone tissue engineering scaffold.

Li-doped hydroxyapatite (LiHA) which is prepared through introducing low dose of Li into hydroxyapatite (HA) has been increasingly studied as a bone tissue-engineered scaffold. The degradation properties play a crucial role in the success of long-term implantation of a bone tissue-engineered construct. Herein, the in vitro degradation behaviors of LiHA scaffolds via two approaches were investigated in this study: solution-mediated degradation and osteoblast-mediated degradation. In solution-mediated degradation, after being immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF) for some time, some characteris

Self-propelled Janus mesoporous silica nanomotors with sub-100 nm diameters for drug encapsulation and delivery.

The synthesis of an innovative self-propelled Janus nanomotor with a diameter of about 75 nm that can be used as a drug carrier is described. The Janus nanomotor is based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with chromium/platinum metallic caps and propelled by decomposing hydrogen peroxide to generate oxygen as a driving force with speeds up to 20.2 μm s(-1) (about 267 body lengths per second). The diffusion coefficient (D) of nanomotors with different H2 O2 concentrations is calculated by tracking the movement of individual particles recorded by means of a self-assembled fluorescence mi

Porous silicon oxide-PLGA composite microspheres for sustained ocular delivery of daunorubicin.

A water-soluble anthracycline antibiotic drug (daunorubicin, DNR) was loaded into oxidized porous silicon (pSiO2) microparticles and then encapsulated with a layer of polymer (poly lactide-co-glycolide, PLGA) to investigate their synergistic effects in control of DNR release. Similarly fabricated PLGA-DNR microspheres without pSiO2, and pSiO2 microparticles without PLGA were used as control particles. The composite microparticles synthesized by a solid-in-oil-in-water emulsion method have mean diameters of 52.33±16.37μm for PLGA-pSiO2_21/40-DNR and the mean diameter of 49.31±8.87μm for PLGA-pS

Immobilisation of lipase on the surface of magnetic nanoparticles and non-porous glass beads for regioselective acetylation of prednisolone.

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were prepared by co-precipitation of Fe+3/Fe+2 (2:1; molar ratio) with a mean size of 40 ± 5 nm. Scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometer and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterise the MNPs. The MNPs and also hydroxylated nonporous glass beads were similarly functionalised with the aid of glutaraldehyde to be cross-linked to lipase originated from Thermomyces lanuginosus (TLL). The yield and efficiency for immobilised lipase on the MNPs were calculated as 72 ± 2.4 and 63 ± 3.5%, whereas

A bioactive and bioresorbable porous cubic composite scaffold loaded with bone marrow aspirate: a potential alternative to autogenous bone grafting.

STUDY DESIGN: Experimental animal study. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the osteogenic properties of a particulate uncalcined, unsintered hydroxyapatite/polydllactide (u-HA/PdlLA) composite scaffold loaded with bone marrow aspirate (BMA). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Because of the high morbidity associated with bone graft harvesting, current research in spine surgery has largely focused on bone graft alternatives involving a combination of scaffolds and osteogenic substances. BMA is obtained by a simple and relatively noninvasive method and can easily be clinically applied as an osteogenic materi

Thermal development of latent fingermarks on porous surfaces--further observations and refinements.

In a further study of the thermal development of fingermarks on paper and similar surfaces, it is demonstrated that direct contact heating of the substrate using coated or ceramic surfaces at temperatures in excess of 230°C produces results superior to those obtained using hot air. Fingermarks can also be developed in this way on other cellulose-based substrates such as wood and cotton fabric, though ridge detail is difficult to obtain in the latter case. Fluorescence spectroscopy indicates that the phenomena observed during the thermal development of fingermarks can be reproduced simply by he
