Mandibular morphology in schizophrenia patients compared with non-psychiatric controls using digital panoramic radiography: a retrospective cross-sectional study from Istanbul, Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a chronic severe mental disorder characterized by impairment in cognition, emotion, perception, and other aspects of behavior. In light of the association of craniofacial dysmorphology with schizophrenia, mandibular morphology may provide clues about the role of neurodevelopment in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. This retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to compare the mandibular morphology of patients with schizophrenia with controls using digital panoramic radiography (DPR). METHODS: 302 recorded diagnostic panoramic images obtained from 143 schizophr

Tlx1 regulates acinar and duct development in mouse salivary glands.

Tlx1 encodes a transcription factor expressed in several craniofacial structures of developing mice. The role of Tlx1 in salivary gland development was examined using morphological and immunohistochemical analyses of Tlx1 null mice. Tlx1 is expressed in submandibular and sublingual glands but not parotid glands of neonatal and adult male and female C57Bl/6J (Tlx1+/+ ) mice. TLX1 protein was localized to the nuclei of terminal tubule cells, developing duct cells and mesenchymal cells in neonatal submandibular and sublingual glands, and to nuclei of duct cells and connective tissue cells in adul

Paediatric skull growth models: A systematic review of applications to normal skulls and craniosynostoses.

INTRODUCTION: Craniosynostoses affect 1/2000 births and their incidence is currently increasing. Without surgery, craniosynostosis can lead to neurological issues due to restrained brain growth and social stigma due to abnormal head shapes. Understanding growth patterns is essential to develop surgical planning approaches and predict short- and long-term post-operative results. Here we provide a systematic review of normal and pathological cranial vault growth models. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The systematic review of the literature identified descriptive and comprehensive skull growth models wit

Analysis of the Fgfr2C342Y mouse model shows condensation defects due to misregulation of Sox9 expression in prechondrocytic mesenchyme.

Syndromic craniosynostosis caused by mutations in FGFR2 is characterised by developmental pathology in both endochondral and membranous skeletogenesis. Detailed phenotypic characterisation of features in the membranous calvarium, the endochondral cranial base and other structures in the axial and appendicular skeleton has not been performed at embryonic stages. We investigated bone development in the Crouzon mouse model (Fgfr2C342Y) at pre- and post-ossification stages to improve understanding of the underlying pathogenesis. Phenotypic analysis was performed by whole-mount skeletal staining (A

Prenatal diagnosis and molecular cytogenetic characterization of mosaicism for a small supernumerary marker chromosome derived from chromosome 16.

OBJECTIVE: We present prenatal diagnosis and molecular cytogenetic characterization of a small supernumerary marker chromosome (sSMC) derived from chromosome 16. CASE REPORT: A 28-year-old woman underwent amniocentesis at 17 weeks of gestation because of abnormal maternal serum screening for Down syndrome. Amniocentesis revealed a karyotype of 47,XY,+mar[5]/46,XY[9]. Parental karyotypes were normal. Prenatal ultrasound findings were unremarkable. Array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) analysis of cultured amniocytes revealed a de novo 16% gene dosage increase of 16q11.2-q22.1. Repeat

Sonic hedgehog is a chemotactic neural crest cell guide that is perturbed by ethanol exposure.

Our aim was to understand the involvement of Sonic hedgehog (Shh) morphogen in the oriented distribution of neural crest cells (NCCs) toward the optic vesicle and to look for potential disorders of this guiding mechanism after ethanol exposure. In vitro directional analysis showed the chemotactic response of NCCs up Shh gradients and to notochord co-cultures (Shh source) or to their conditioned medium, a response inhibited by anti-Shh antibody, receptor inhibitor cyclopamine and anti-Smo morpholino (MO). Expression of the Ptch-Smo receptor complex on in vitro NCCs was also shown. In whole embr

Clinical and radiological observations in a case series of 26 patients with fibrous dysplasia.

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a rare disease caused by a sporadic postzygotic missense mutation that leads to abnormal fibroblast proliferation, defective osteoblast differentiation, and increased bone resorption. It may affect one or several bones. Both the mono-ostotic and polyostotic types may be associated with hyperfunctional endocrinopathies and hyperpigmentation of the skin (café-au-lait spots) in the so-called McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS). Due to its rarity, only a few case series are available, making it difficult for most clinicians to judge the severity of the disease. To improve our

Mandibuloacral dysplasia type A-associated progeria caused by homozygous LMNA mutation in a family from Southern China.

BACKGROUND: Mandibuloacral dysplasia type A (MADA) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder, characterized by growth retardation, skeletal abnormality with progressive osteolysis of the distal phalanges and clavicles, craniofacial anomalies with mandibular hypoplasia, lipodystrophy and mottled cutaneous pigmentation. Some patients may show progeroid features. MADA with partial lipodystrophy, more marked acral, can be caused by homozygous or compound heterozygous mutation in the gene encoding lamin A and lamin C (LMNA). MADA and Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome are caused by the same gene and

Clinical and molecular characterization of a transmitted reciprocal translocation t(1;12)(p32.1;q21.3) in a family co-segregating with mental retardation, language delay, and microcephaly.

BACKGROUND: Chromosome translocation associated with neurodevelopmental disorders provides an opportunity to identify new disease-associated genes and gain new insight into their function. During chromosome analysis, we identified a reciprocal translocation between chromosomes 1p and 12q, t(1; 12)(p32.1; q21.3), co-segregating with microcephaly, language delay, and severe psychomotor retardation in a mother and her two affected boys. METHODS: Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), long-range PCR, and direct sequencing were used to map the breakpoints on chromosomes 1p and 12q. A reporter

Treatment of frontoethmoidal meningoencephalocele in Cambodia: a low-cost procedure for developing countries.

OBJECT: Frontoethmoidal meningoencephaloceles (MECs) are a relatively common abnormality in southeast Asia, with disastrous consequences for the sufferer. In Cambodia, a lack of skilled neuro- and craniofacial surgeons, and the cost of surgery limit the possibilities for appropriate treatment of patients with these lesions. The authors developed a low-cost humanitarian program with the goals of treating frontoethmoidal MECs, ensuring careful postoperative follow-up, and teaching Khmer surgeons how to treat these malformations. METHODS: This program was facilitated by two nongovernmental organ
