Airborne particulate matter increases MUC5AC expression by downregulating Claudin-1 expression in human airway cells.

Voice assessment before and after treatment helps the clinician to assess the effectiveness of the treatment given and facilitates comparison between different treatment modalities. Voice handicap index -10(VHI-10) questionnaire is a tool which allows the voice to be evaluated subjectively from the patient's perspective. PRAAT is a freely available, software programme that acoustically analyse voice signals. Smart phones are widely used and the high quality of the embedded microphone in it makes it a suitable and easily available voice recording device. This study aims at using PRAAT and VHI-1

Exploring the Effects of the Narrative Embodied in the Hearing Aid Fitting Process on Treatment Outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: There is strong evidence from other fields of health, and growing evidence in audiology, that characteristics of the process of intervention as perceived by the client (embodied narratives) can have significant effects on treatment outcomes, independent of the technical properties of the intervention itself. This phenomenon deserves examination because studies of technical interventions that fail to take account of it may reach erroneous conclusions and because clinical practice can put such effects to therapeutic use. The aim of this study was to test the idea that embodied narrat

Rapid, Accurate 3-D Localization of Inertial Cavitation Events Using a Large Aperture, Narrowband, Receive-Capable Focused Ultrasound Array.

Accurate, real-time localization of cavitation events is critical for ensuring the safety and efficacy of histotripsy treatments. Current methods, such as 2-D passive acoustic mapping (PAM) and B-mode imaging, lack the necessary speed and spatial resolution for the high-treatment rates (> 100 Hz) of histotripsy. In this study, we present two computationally efficient, time-domain methods-trilateration acoustic cavitation emission (TRACE) and bandwidth-limited, large-aperture, active-acoustic, and spatio-temporal mapping (BLAST)-for rapid 3-D cavitation localization using a large-aperture, narr

Hot-cold water sound perception and auditory-thermal discrimination.

This study aimed to determine whether individuals can discriminate the temperature state of water using auditory cues alone and to identify the acoustic, perceptual, and neurocognitive factors associated with this ability. Sixty-three volunteers aged 18-25 years with normal hearing participated. Participants were presented with prerecorded sounds of hot and cold water being poured into four types of cups (glass, plastic, paper, porcelain) and completed discrimination and matching tasks while auditory processing and event-related potential measures were obtained. Results from Spectral-Temporall

Modeling the influence of interactions on different variables in a turbulent thermoacoustic system.

Turbulent reacting flows confined to ducts are plagued by thermoacoustic instability, a state in which a positive feedback between flow, flame, and acoustic perturbations leads to the emergence of catastrophically high-amplitude oscillatory dynamics in the sound and global heat release rate fluctuations. Modeling the interdependence between local interactions and the global emergence of order in such spatially extended complex systems is exacting. Here, we present a novel reduced-order model to capture the influence of the local interactions on distinct variables exhibiting global emergence of

Instability and Flame-Pressure Coupling in Downward Propagating Premixed H2/CO/CO2/Air Flames.

This study investigates the instability and flame-pressure coupling characteristics of downward propagating premixed H2/CO/CO2/air flames under varying hydrogen volume fractions (HVF). Particular attention was paid to flame morphology evolution, overpressure development, thermoacoustic characteristics, and reaction sensitivity. The results show that increasing HVF markedly modifies flame dynamics. Smooth and laminar-dominated flame fronts are observed at low HVF (5%-10%), whereas pronounced wrinkling, finger-like structures, and cellular instabilities emerge when HVF ≥ 15%, indicating a transi

OpenQPAIData: Measurements of test objects with reference labels for quantitative photoacoustic imaging research.

The goal of quantitative photoacoustic imaging (qPAI) is to determine absolute chromophore concentrations from multispectral photoacoustic images. Achieving this goal would enable bias-free molecular photoacoustic imaging and the derivation of functional tissue biomarkers, such as local blood oxygenation, with numerous clinical implications. To deliver qPAI, two inverse problems must be solved: the acoustic inverse problem of reconstructing the initial pressure distribution from measured signals, and the optical inverse problem of reconstructing spatial images of optical absorption from the in

Green monkeys' repertoires maintain consistency on Caribbean islands despite centuries of geographic isolation.

Green monkeys (Chlorocebus sabaeus) were introduced to the Caribbean in the 17th century. Since then, they have established isolated populations on the islands of Barbados, St. Kitts and St. Martin. This geographic distribution provides a unique opportunity to assess communication differences that may have arisen in these populations over this period of geographic isolation from the native West African population. Using an established vocal repertoire from monkeys living in Barbados, we investigated how call types may have diverged across these three islands. We collected vocal data from St. K

Motorcycle Noise Annoyance in Residential Areas Along Popular Leisure Routes.

Motorcycle noise along leisure routes constitutes a distinct environmental health burden poorly captured by standard road traffic noise indicators. This study derives source-specific exposure-response functions and examines non-acoustic predictors of residential motorcycle noise annoyance. A mixed-methods socio-acoustic design was applied in five study areas in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. A community survey (N = 493) assessed long-term annoyance (12-month recall); a smartphone-based experience-sampling study (MotoApp; N = 213; ten days in summer 2022) collected hourly ratings. Rapid volumetric rewarming of cryopreserved samples using a steerable ultrasound array.

This work presents the characterization and application of a 128-element high-power High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) phased array for the rapid and spatially uniform rewarming of cryopreserved biological samples. The device operates 512 Watts of electrical power with electronically steerable foci, enabling sub-millimeter precision heating over centimeter-scale volumes. Using simulation-informed configurations and iterative focal cycling, we achieve warming rates exceeding 150 °C/min with spatial variations below ±10 °C in mouse organs, and 200 °C/min with ±15 °C homogeneity in agar pha

Sensitivity in phononic crystal sensors via super asymmetric coupled-cavity engineering.

This work presents a one-dimensional super-asymmetric coupled-cavity phononic crystal sensor for concentration-dependent liquid analysis using an ethanol-water mixture as the sensing medium. The proposed structure consists of periodic acoustic mirrors surrounding an asymmetric coupled-defect region expressed as Air∣(A/B)7∣CL∣D∣CR∣(B/A)7 ∣Air, where the asymmetry is introduced through unequal coupling cavity thicknesses. The structural asymmetry modifies the acoustic confinement behavior inside the liquid defect cavity and enhances the resonance sensitivity to concentration variations. The tran

MIDAS: A multimodal interview-based framework for depression assessment from clinical interviews.

Automated depression assessment from clinical interviews is a challenging intelligent healthcare task because depressive states are reflected not only in verbal responses, but also in acoustic and visual-behavioral cues. Existing multimodal methods have improved prediction performance, but many still process interviews as generic long sequences and provide limited structured evidence for interpreting model outputs. This paper presents MIDAS, an interview-aware multimodal framework that preserves the question-response structure of clinical interviews for depression assessment. MIDAS organizes i

Functional Distinctions between the Auditory Cortex and Frontoparietal Network in the Encoding of Speech Features.

Neural representations of acoustic features that are key to speech perception have been studied extensively within the auditory cortex (AC), but their representations in higher-order cortical regions remain poorly understood. This study investigates the cortical encoding of three acoustic features in spoken vowels to delineate the functional distinctions across different cortical regions. We used ultra-high-field functional magnetic resonance imaging while human participants of both sexes listened to vowels and were asked to identify three aspects: vowel identity (probing spectral content), sp

Influence of simulated adverse events of the floating mass transducer in a mechanical middle ear model.

BACKGROUND: The Vibrant Soundbridge Implant provides multiple options for coupling the Floating Mass Transducer (FMT) to the ossicles. A parametric evaluation in clinical trials is difficult. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: We studied the vibratory output of the FMT with three couplers-short process, former long process, and current long process-in an acoustic-mechanical middle ear model (AMEM) under simulated impaired coupling conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The AMEM, with life-sized ossicles, was tested via acoustic and electrical (FMT-) stimulation. Simulated impairments included accidental bone-cont

Ultraviolet B Treatment of the Forearm Alters Supraspinal Nociceptive Processing.

Exposing the skin to high levels of ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation induces an inflammatory response that upregulates local nociceptive processing; this, in turn, facilitates protective responses to limit further injury. In this study, the UVB model was used to explore additional effects of inflammation on supraspinal nociceptive processing. Thirty-one healthy participants attended two sessions approximately 24 h apart. In each session, pressure-pain thresholds and sensitivity to sharp stimulation and heat were assessed in both forearms, and pressure-pain thresholds and sensitivity to sharp stim

Audition and balance: The impact of echolocation on postural control.

The links between the perception of acoustic signals and postural control remain largely unexplored, and the control models proposed to date have yet to assign these sensory inputs a role alongside visual, proprioceptive, and vestibular information. Research on this topic has produced varied conclusions, likely due to significant methodological differences. Our study makes novel contributions by aiming to determine the impact of the auditory system-specifically through the perception of echoes-on postural control during quiet standing and to identify the potential link between auditory percept

Relative Fundamental Frequency: Only for Hyperfunctional Voices? A Pilot Study.

(1) Background: Assessing phonatory disorders due to laryngeal biomechanical alterations requires aerodynamic analysis, assessing subglottic pressure, transglottic flow, and laryngeal resistance. This study explores whether the acoustic parameter, the relative fundamental frequency (RFF), can be studied using the current acoustic analysis protocol at the University of Navarra's voice laboratory and its association with pathologies linked to laryngeal biomechanical alterations. (2) Methods: A retrospective cohort study included patients diagnosed with muscular tension dysphonia, organic lesions
