Changes in intrinsic functional brain networks following blast-induced mild traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Blast-induced mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) commonly go undetected by computed tomography and conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This study was used to investigate functional brain network abnormalities in a group of blast-induced mTBI subjects using independent component analysis (ICA) of resting state functional MRI (fMRI) data. METHODS: Twenty-eight resting state networks of 13 veterans who sustained blast-induced mTBI were compared with healthy controls across three fMRI domains: blood oxygenation level-dependent spatial maps, time course spectra and function

Two different morphologies of chronic unilateral middle cerebral artery occlusion: evaluation using high-resolution MRI.

INTRODUCTION: Characterizing the morphologies of occluded artery segments may help elucidate the etiology of chronic intracranial artery occlusion. We acquired high-resolution MRI (HR-MRI) of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) in patients with chronic unilateral MCA occlusion and evaluated the MRI and clinical findings. METHODS: We selected 20 consecutive patients who presented with unilateral MCA occlusion. Proton-density weighted HR-MRI of the occluded MCA was acquired using a 3.0 Tesla MRI. We surveyed the morphology of the MCA at the occluded segment. Symptoms, the presence of other stenoti

Variation in longitudinal trajectories of regional brain volumes of healthy men and women (ages 10 to 85 years) measured with atlas-based parcellation of MRI.

Numerous cross-sectional MRI studies have characterized age-related differences in regional brain volumes that differ with structure and tissue type. The extent to which cross-sectional assumptions about change are accurate depictions of actual longitudinal measurement remains controversial. Even longitudinal studies can be limited by the age range of participants, sex distribution of the samples, and scan intervals. To address these issues, we calculated trajectories of regional brain volume changes from T1-weighted (SPGR) MRI data, quantified with our automated, unsupervised SRI24 atlas-base

The influence of preterm birth on structural alterations of the vision-deprived brain.

Differences in brain structures between blind and sighted individuals have not been widely investigated. Furthermore, existing studies have included individuals who were blinded by retinopathy of prematurity, a condition that is associated with premature birth. Recent pediatric research has reported structural differences in individuals who were born prematurely, suggesting that some of the structural abnormalities previously observed in blind individuals may be related to prematurity rather than being specific to blindness. In the present study, we used voxel-based morphometry to investigate

Feasibility of ASL-based phMRI with a single dose of oral citalopram for repeated assessment of serotonin function.

Assessment of cerebral serotonin (5-HT) function with arterial spin labeling (ASL)-based pharmacological magnetic resonance imaging (phMRI) could be a highly useful tool in clinical psychiatric research. The goal of this study was to verify the reliability of ASL-based phMRI after an oral challenge of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) in repeated assessment of cerebral 5-HT function. In a placebo-controlled, within-subject crossover study we investigated the effect of a single oral dose of citalopram on brain cerebral blood flow (CBF) using a pulsed ASL sequence (PASL) in twelve

[MR defaecography for the diagnosis of obstructive defaecation disorders].

As a consequence of demographic changes, outlet obstruction represents an increasingly common disease. The presence and ample interactions of morphological and functional pathologies contribute to the complexity of pelvic floor dysfunction. Additionally, multiple compartments of the pelvic floor are frequently affected. MR defaecography allows for the simultaneous and detailed assessment of morphological as well as functional changes of the pelvic floor. Hence, this approach constitutes an integral part of the diagnostic work-up and preoperative evaluation of the anorectum. The supine patient

Impairments of thalamic nuclei in idiopathic generalized epilepsy revealed by a study combining morphological and functional connectivity MRI.

OBJECTIVE: Neuroimaging evidence suggested that the thalamic nuclei may play different roles in the progress of idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE). This study aimed to demonstrate the alterations in morphometry and functional connectivity in the thalamic nuclei in IGE. METHODS: Fifty-two patients with IGE characterized by generalized tonic-clonic seizures and 67 healthy controls were involved in the study. The three-dimensional high-resolution T1-weighted MRI data were acquired for voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis, and resting-state blood-oxygenation level functional MRI data were ac

Surface-based TBM boosts power to detect disease effects on the brain: an N=804 ADNI study.

Computational anatomy methods are now widely used in clinical neuroimaging to map the profile of disease effects on the brain and its clinical correlates. In Alzheimer's disease (AD), many research groups have modeled localized changes in hippocampal and lateral ventricular surfaces, to provide candidate biomarkers of disease progression for drug trials. We combined the power of parametric surface modeling and tensor-based morphometry to study hippocampal differences associated with AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in 490 subjects (97 AD, 245 MCI, 148 controls) and ventricular difference

Intra-arterial application of nimodipine in reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome: a diagnostic tool in select cases?

INTRODUCTION: Differential diagnoses of the reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS) include all forms of intracranial stenotic disease, such as primary or secondary vasculitis of the central nervous system. Here, we tested the hypothesis that angiographic response to intra-arterial nimodipine application may be helpful in differentiating between RCVS and other entities. METHODS: A digital subtraction angiographic (DSA) series of nine consecutive patients with suspected RCVS that were treated by intra-arterial nimodipine due to clinical worsening were retrospectively analyzed. MRI in the characterization and local staging of testicular neoplasms.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the role of MRI in the preoperative characterization and local staging of testicular neoplasms. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: MRI was performed on 33 patients referred because a testicular mass had been detected clinically and sonographically. Both T1- and T2-weighted sequences were performed with a 1.5-T MRI unit. Gadolinium chelate was administered IV in all cases. We recorded the presence of a lesion and whether the histologic diagnosis of testicular malignancy could have been predicted on the basis of MRI features. For testicular neoplasms, local

Left ventricular lateral annulus and left atrial free-wall velocity time integral indicate thromboembolism in patients with rheumatic atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: Low wall motion and stasis increase the likelihood of clot formation. We hypothesized that tissue Doppler indices of left atrial (LA) motion are reduced in the presence of LA thrombi and may be predictive for clot formation in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). METHODS: We did an observational study for 3 years in 118 patients with rheumatic mitral valve disease in chronic AF who had not received anticoagulation, with (Group 1, n = 36) and without (Group 2, n = 82) thromboembolism. Pulsed tissue Doppler systolic velocities and velocity time integrals (VTIs) were measured in a

Brain volumes in psychotic youth with schizophrenia and mood disorders.

BACKGROUND: We sought to test the hypothesis that deficits in grey matter volume are characteristic of psychotic youth with early-onset schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (EOSS) but not of psychotic youth with early-onset mood disorders (EOMD). METHODS: We used magnetic resonance imaging to examine brain volume in 24 psychotic youth (13 male, 11 female) with EOSS (n = 12) or EOMD (n = 12) and 17 healthy controls (10 male, 7 female). We measured the volume of grey and white matter using an automated segmentation program. RESULTS: After adjustment for age and intracranial volume, whole brain vol

Brain glucose metabolism in vascular white matter disease with dementia: differentiation from Alzheimer disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The boundary between vascular dementia and Alzheimer disease (AD) continues to be unclear. Some posit that gradually progressive vascular dementia, as with small vessel disease, is simply vascular disease plus AD. Because AD presents a characteristic pattern on fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography, we sought to determine whether the fluorodeoxyglucose pattern of vascular dementia resembled more AD or the pattern in nondemented patients with severe microvascular brain disease. METHODS: Vascular disease patients were selected on the basis of confluent white ma

fMRI study of brain activity elicited by oral parafunctional movements.

Parafunctional masticatory activity, such as the tooth clenching and grinding that is associated with bruxism, is encountered by clinicians in many disciplines, including dentistry, neurology and psychiatry. Despite this, little is known about the neurological basis for these activities. To identify the brain network engaged in such complex oromotor activity, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to elucidate the brain activation patterns of 20 individuals (10 males and 10 females, mean s.d. age of 26.3+/-4.1 years) with (parafunctional, PFx group, 5M/5F) and without (normal fu

A three-dimensional comparison of the modifying effects of familial genetic contribution in Turner syndrome.

Comparison of individuals affected by chromosomal aneuploidies with controls has already confirmed the differential action of X and Y chromosomes during dental ontogeny. Permanent enamel and dentin structures are formed during the development of the dentition and these reflect the combined effects of both genetic and environmental factors during the prenatal and early postnatal period. It can provide key information on the effect of developmental assaults such as chromosomal aneuploidy as it is not subject to subsequent resorption or remodelling like other skeletal structures within the body.

Collateral circulation imaging: MR perfusion territory arterial spin-labeling at 3T.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Current knowledge of the collateral circulation remains sparse, and a noninvasive method to better characterize the role of collaterals is desirable. The aim of our study was to investigate the presence and distal flow of collaterals by using a new MR perfusion territory imaging, vessel-encoded arterial spin-labeling (VE-ASL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-six patients with internal carotid artery (ICA) or middle cerebral artery (MCA) stenosis were identified by sonography. VE-ASL was performed to assess the presence and function of collateral flow. The perfusion inform
