Preliminary metabolomics analysis of placenta in maternal obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Metabolomics identifies phenotypical groups with specific metabolic profiles, being increasingly applied to several pregnancy conditions. This is the first preliminary study analyzing placental metabolomics in normal weight (NW) and obese (OB) pregnancies. METHODS: Twenty NW (18.5 ≤ BMI< 25 kg/m2) and eighteen OB (BMI≥ 30 kg/m2) pregnancies were studied. Placental biopsies were collected at elective caesarean section. Metabolites extraction method was optimized for hydrophilic and lipophilic phases, then analyzed with GC-MS. Univariate and PLS-DA multivariate analysis were appli

Detection of carbon dioxide thresholds using low-flow sidestream capnography in ventilated preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring CO2 levels in preterm infants receiving mechanical ventilation is designed to avoid the harmful consequences of hypocapnia or hypercapnia. Capnography is of questionable accuracy for monitoring PCO2 in preterm infants. OBJECTIVES: To determine the accuracy of sidestream capnography in ventilated preterm infants by comparing end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO2) values to mixed venous carbon dioxide pressure (PvCO2) and to transcutaneous carbon dioxide pressure (TcPCO2). METHODS: Simultaneous recordings of EtCO2, TcPCO2 and PvCO2 in 37 ventilated preterm infants. The PvCO2-E

Enhanced cognitive activity--over and above social or physical activity--is required to protect Alzheimer's mice against cognitive impairment, reduce Abeta deposition, and increase synaptic immunoreactivity.

Although social, physical, and cognitive activities have each been suggested to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD), epidemiologic studies cannot determine which activity or combination of activities is most important. To address this question, mutant APP transgenic AD mice were reared long-term in one of four housing conditions (impoverished, social, social+physical, or complete enrichment) from 1(1/2) through 9 months of age. Thus, a stepwise layering of social, physical, and enhanced cognitive activity was created. Behavioral evaluation in a full battery of sensorimotor, anxiety, an

HistoDiffusion++: A generative visual foundation model for histopathology.

Histopathology image analysis has been revolutionized with the introduction of deep learning. While task-specific models have shown strong performance, they often rely on large annotated datasets that are difficult to obtain in practice. Recent foundation models mitigate this dependency via self-supervised learning and have achieved promising results in discriminative analysis and text generation. However, the tasks requiring image generation capabilities remain underexplored, especially under data-scarce conditions. Hence, we present HistoDiffusion++, a multi-magnification generative visual f

Rapid detection and strain-level identification of milk-borne bacteria using a polymer-based chemical tongue.

The detection and strain-level identification of bacteria in food are critical for public health; however, conventional methods typically require expensive equipment, lengthy protocols, and/or specialized expertise. Here, we report a 'chemical tongue' strategy, i.e., an analytical approach inspired by the human gustatory system, for the rapid and user-friendly strain-level sensing of foodborne bacteria. In this platform, a panel of cationic polymers that bear environment-responsive dansyl fluorophores interact nonspecifically yet differentially with the negatively charged bacterial surface, ge

‌CT image-derived radiomics predicts molecular subtypes in bladder urothelial carcinoma: validation of a non-invasive classification strategy.

This pilot study aimed to investigate the correlation between CT-based radiomic features and molecular subtypes in bladder urothelial carcinoma, to determine whether pretreatment computed tomography (CT)-derived radiomic profiles can discriminate distinct molecular classifications of bladder cancer. We retrospectively analyzed 96 patients with pathologically confirmed bladder urothelial carcinoma who underwent transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT). Radiomic texture parameters including mean intensity, standard deviation, entropy, kurtosis, and skewness were extracted from preoperati

A qualitative study of the lived experiences of working age adults living with adventitious total bilateral blindness in Nigeria.

Working age adults living with adventitious blindness (occurring from age five) in Nigeria face significant challenges, including rehabilitation, depriving them of the quality of care required for successful adaptation and integration. This study aimed to explore their lived experiences to inform policy and service delivery. Dahlgren and Whitehead's socioecological model underpinned this study to highlight how institutions and society shape participants' lives. In-depth interviews were conducted with 40 participants on multi-level and multi-dimensional factors, including environmental, economi

Phenomenological analysis of lived experiences within the LGBTQ+ community in Rwanda.

Despite the existence of laws protecting human rights in Rwanda, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people continue to face discrimination with its roots in cultural, religious, and moral beliefs. This study explored the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals using a phenomenological design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and digital storytelling with 57 participants from six districts. Participants were recruited through purposive and snowball sampling, ensuring homogeneity and representation. A thematic queer phenomenological a

PGC-1α regulates the interplay between oxidative stress, senescence and autophagy in the ageing retina important in age-related macular degeneration.

We previously showed that mice with knockout in the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PPARGC1A) gene encoding the PGC-1α protein, and nuclear factor erythroid 2 like 2 (NFE2L2) gene, exhibited some features of the age-related macular degeneration (AMD) phenotype. To further explore the mechanism behind the involvement of PGC-1α in AMD pathogenesis we used young (3-month) and old (12-month) mice with knockout in the PPARGC1A gene and age-matched wild-type (WT) animals. An immunohistochemical analysis showed age-dependent different expression of markers of oxi

Association between somatosensory sensitivity and regional gray matter volume in healthy young volunteers: a voxel-based morphometry study.

Two-point discrimination (2PD) test reflects somatosensory spatial discrimination ability, but evidence on the relationship between 2PD and cortical gray matter (GM) volume is limited. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between cortical GM volume and 2PD threshold in young healthy individuals and to clarify the characteristics of brain structure reflecting the individual differences in somatosensory function. 2PD was measured in 42 healthy (20 females) volunteers aged 20-32 years using a custom-made test system that can be controlled by a personal computer. The 2PD of the right index

Development and Validation of a Risk Prediction Model to Predict Postextubation Dysphagia in Elderly Patients After Endotracheal Intubation Under General Anesthesia: A Single-Center Cross-Sectional Study.

At present, the incidence and risk factors for dysphagia after extubation in elderly inpatients are still unclear, and we aimed to develop and validate a risk prediction model that prospectively identifies high-risk patients to reduce the occurrence rate of dysphagia. The 469 patients recruited were randomly divided into modeling and validation groups in a 7:3 ratio. In the modeling group, the postextubation dysphagia (PED) risk factors were analyzed, and a risk prediction model was established. In the validation group, the model was validated and evaluated. The model was constructed based on

Cerebrospinal Fluid EV Concentration and Size Are Altered in Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia with Lewy Bodies.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) represent the three major neurodegenerative dementias characterized by abnormal brain protein accumulation. In this study, we investigated extracellular vesicles (EVs) and neurotrophic factors in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 120 subjects: 36 with AD, 30 with DLB, 34 with FTD and 20 controls. Specifically, CSF EVs were analyzed by Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis and neurotrophic factors were measured with ELISA. We found higher EV concentration and lower EV size in AD and DLB groups compared to the co

Discriminating BTX Molecules by the Nonselective Metal Oxide Sensor-Based Smart Sensing System.

Discriminating structurally similar volatile organic compounds (VOCs) molecules, such as benzene, toluene, and three xylene isomers (BTX), remains a significant challenge, especially, for metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors, in which selectivity is a long-standing challenge. Recent progress indicates that temperature modulation of a single MOS sensor offers a powerful route in extracting the features of adsorbed gas analytes than conventional isothermal operation. Herein, a rectangular heating waveform is applied on NiO-, WO3-, and SnO2-based sensors to gradually activate the specific gas/

Portable Impedance Analyzer as a Rapid Screening Tool for Malaria: An Experimental Study With Culture and Blood Infected Samples by Early Forms of Plasmodium Falciparum.

Infection by the parasite of malaria is a serious healthcare problem for populations residing primarily in tropical and subtropical countries. Early detection of the disease is essential to reduce both the mortality rate and spreading of the disease in the infected areas. Current methods for malaria diagnosis still rely on microscopic analysis of blood smears, which is a time-consuming and expensive process, in addition of requiring trained examiners to perform the analysis. In this paper, we introduce a novel fast screening tool for malaria based on a portable blood impedance analyzer. The si
