Machine learning models based on routine blood and biochemical test data for diagnosis of neurological diseases.

Globally, nervous system diseases are the leading cause of disability-adjusted life-years and the second leading cause of mortality in the world. Traditional diagnostic methods for nervous system diseases are expensive. So this study aimed to construct machine learning models using the convenient blood routine and biochemical detection data for diagnosis of nervous system diseases. After the data preprocessing, 25,794 healthy people and 7518 nervous system disease patients with the blood routine and biochemical detection data were utilized for our study. We selected logistic regression, random

Antimicrobial resistance recommendations via electronic health records with graph representation and patient population modeling.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which refers to the ability of pathogenic bacteria to withstand the effects of antibiotics, is a critical global health issue. Traditional methods for identifying AMRs in clinical settings rely on in-lab testing, which hampers timely medical decision-making. Moreover, there is a notable delay in updating empirical treatment guidelines in response to the rapid evolution of pathogens. Recent advances in AMR research have illuminated the potential of machine learning-based patient information analysis using electronic health records (EHRs). METHODS: Ag

Dynamic cheek surface modeling for enhanced hypomimia detection in Parkinson's disease.

Hypomimia, or facial masking, is a prominent symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD), impacting up to 90% of patients and reducing their quality of life by impairing facial expressivity. Detecting hypomimia is challenging due to its subtle onset and the limited availability of robust diagnostic tools for automatic analysis. To address these gaps, we propose a novel approach based on cheek surface variability, which captures subtle, progressive changes in cheek movement across different temporal granularities within video frames. To evaluate the effectiveness of our cheek marker approach, we also i

An optimized framework for Parkinson's disease classification using multimodal neuroimaging data with ensemble-based and data fusion networks.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects both the motor and nonmotor functions of an individual and is more prevalent in older adults. PD is preceded by an early stage called prodromal PD, which starts very early before the typical symptoms of the disease appear. If patients are managed and diagnosed at this initial stage, their quality of life can be maintained. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a widespread approach in neuroimaging that is very helpful in the diagnosis of brain-related diseases. Current studies of PD classification mostly use T1-weighted MRI or

Lightweight Spectral-MLP for Hyperspectral Differentiation of Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma and Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Accurate differentiation between intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains challenging due to overlapping imaging features. We propose a hyperspectral imaging (HSI)-based diagnostic framework using a lightweight Spectral-MLP network for label-free tumor classification. Seventy-nine liver specimens were analyzed after spectral calibration, noise-band removal, and normalization within 450-900 nm. Spectral analysis revealed distinct differences in hemoglobin-related bands (540-580 nm) and lipid/water absorption regions (760-850 nm), corresponding to vascular

Semi-Automated Multi-Label Classification of Autistic Mannerisms by Machine Learning on Post Hoc Skeletal Tracking.

Mannerisms describe repetitive or unconventional body movements like arm flapping. These movements are early markers of restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs) in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, assessing mannerisms reliably is challenging. Even after extensive training in behavioral observations, inter-rater agreements for mannerism items remain insufficient. The current study used machine learning (ML) to classify mannerisms from videotaped behavioral observations in children with ASD. We developed a classification scheme for mannerisms as ground truth and applied it to videotape

Discrimination of urine infrared spectral biomarkers for early-stage chronic kidney disease patients using attenuated total reflectance fourier transform infrared spectrometry.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a highly prevalent non-communicable disorder lacking a gold standard method for diagnosis. Early-stage CKD remains undiagnosed and untreated leading to the disease progression. The study aimed to discriminate urine samples from CKD patients and healthy groups using an ATR-FTIR spectrometer. Forty-five healthy and a hundred CKD urine samples were included. Five replicates of three microliters of urine were dropped onto a crystal and air-dried as a film on a portable ATR-FTIR spectrometer. Spectra were analyzed using multivariate analysis combined with machine lea

Automatic opportunistic osteoporosis screening using chest X-ray images via deep neural networks.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is a bone disease characterized by reduced bone mineral density and quality, which increases the risk of fragility fractures. The current diagnostic gold standard, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), faces limitations such as low equipment penetration, high testing costs, and radiation exposure, restricting its feasibility as a screening tool. METHOD: To address these limitations, we retrospectively collected data from 1995 patients who visited Chongqing Daping Hospital between January 2019 and August 2024. We have developed an opportunistic screening method using

Enhancing stroke recovery assessment: A machine learning approach to real-world hand function analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hand weakness is a major contributor to long-term disability in stroke survivors, severely affecting daily function and quality of life. Although wrist-worn accelerometers offer an objective means of measuring upper limb (UL) use in daily life, traditional metrics such as movement duration and interlimb ratios provide only limited insight. When combined with unsupervised clustering, these heuristic measures often fail to capture meaningful clinical differences as the groupings frequently show substantial overlap on clinical scales like the Action Research Arm Test (ARAT). Novel artificial intelligence model predicts the need for reduction of distal radius fractures.

PURPOSE: Distal radius fractures are among the most common upper extremity injuries. While convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown promise in fracture detection, no models have specifically addressed the need for reduction, which is a critical distinction for clinical decision-making. Current AI models detect fractures but fall short in guiding treatment, highlighting an opportunity to enhance triage through AI. METHODS: We retrospectively assembled 495 patients with AP, lateral, and oblique wrist radiographs. To mirror real-world deployment, images were smartphone-style screenshots s
