Personalized 0D models of normal and stenosed carotid arteries.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Recent advances in medical imaging like MRI, CT-Scan, Doppler ultrasound, etc. have made it possible to study the hemodynamics of cardiovascular system having different levels of vessel abnormalities. METHODS: Within this work, we have developed two different personalized lumped-parameter models of the human carotid arteries having elastic and viscoelastic vessel wall behaviors. The data used in developing the models of the carotid arteries is taken from a healthy subject and a patient having mild carotid stenosis (55%) near a bifurcation using doppler ultrasound. Th

Psychological therapies for auditory hallucinations (voices): current status and key directions for future research.

This report from the International Consortium on Hallucinations Research considers the current status and future directions in research on psychological therapies targeting auditory hallucinations (hearing voices). Therapy approaches have evolved from behavioral and coping-focused interventions, through formulation-driven interventions using methods from cognitive therapy, to a number of contemporary developments. Recent developments include the application of acceptance- and mindfulness-based approaches, and consolidation of methods for working with connections between voices and views of sel

Predicting melanoma risk for the Australian population.

BACKGROUND: As melanoma incidence in Australia continues to rise, targeting high-risk individuals for early detection is of paramount importance. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to design a population-specific risk assessment tool to improve on the use of intuition alone for assignment of surveillance strategies for high-risk individuals and help communicate risk more accurately and effectively to patients. METHODS: Methods used in the development of breast cancer risk models were adopted. Data from a large meta-analysis was used to determine risk estimates. Attributable risk was calculated for each ri

Premorbid combat related ptsd in Huntington's disease - Case report.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative, autosomal dominant disease that manifests with a triad of symptom clusters including movement disorder, cognitive impairment and psychiatric symptoms. We present a patient with HD who, prior to developing neurological signs and symptoms, had been exposed to war trauma and had developed posttraumatic stress disorder. Fifteen years later he manifested with dysarthria, difficulties with swallowing and involuntary movement. What brought him to psychiatrist was a heteroanamnestically noticed change in personality with irritable mood, impulsivity, ag

[The body as a third--processes of psychosomatic triangulation using the example of adolescence].

One of the earliest developmental tasks of childhood is the child's possession of its own body, which it formerly had shared with its mother, and which it more and more can experience as belonging to himself. What is called the "psychosomatic triangulation" requires the mother's internal handing over of the responsibility for its body increasingly to the child. For a while the body can play the role of a third between mother and child until in the adolescence the young person completely takes responsibility for his body. There are three ways which can lead to the development of psychosomatic s

Future directions in preventing relapse to substance abuse among clients with severe mental illnesses.

The authors review the literature on substance use disorders among persons with severe mental illnesses, including the other papers in this special section on relapse prevention, and suggest future directions. Although prevention of relapse to substance abuse has a well-developed theoretical and empirical base, this perspective has rarely been applied to persons with co-occurring severe mental illness. Research indicates that clients with co-occurring disorders are highly prone to relapse to substance abuse, even after they have attained full remission. Their risk factors include exacerbations

Studies on poxvirus infections in irradiated animals.

If rabbits were given total body irradiation and infected wih vaccinia virus (strain Elstree) a severe disease developed with a viraemia lasting up to 12 days. The clearance of the virus from the peripheral blood was severely impaired by x-ray doses above 800 R. The attenuated vaccinia virus strain MV did not turn virulent, if it was injected to irradiated rabbits. With caution it can be assumed that live vaccines, containing attenuated viruses, may be given to immunosuppressed persons. Rats are not susceptible to ectromelia-virus (mouse-poxvirus); overt clinical sympatoms, however, with a mor

WINSTON'S DYSTHYMIA: UNDERSTANDING THE CONNECTION BETWEEN CHILDHOOD TRAUMA, WORKPLACE STRAIN, AND COMMUNITY LACK OF EMPATHY IN CHRONIC DEPRESSION.

BACKGROUND: Characters in George Orwell's novel "1984" have certain behavioral features which may be taken as pathological. We hypothesized that Winston Smith in particular suffers from chronic mild depression, which is a result of external pressure from the fictional dystopian society (i.e., multimodal stress of childhood trauma, workplace strain, disrupted close relationships, emotional deprivation, feeling of loneliness, and unempathetic community). To confirm the hypothesis, we conducted a number of analyses of the English text of the novel "1984". SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Taking the full En

Association of domain-general speed of information processing with spoken language outcomes in prelingually-deaf children with cochlear implants.

Spoken language development after pediatric cochlear implantation requires rapid and efficient processing of novel, degraded auditory signals and linguistic information. These demands for rapid adaptation tax the information processing speed ability of children who receive cochlear implants. This study investigated the association of speed of information processing ability with spoken language outcomes after cochlear implantation in prelingually deaf children aged 4-6 years. Two domain-general (visual, non-linguistic) speed of information processing measures were administered to 21 preschool-a

Addressing smoking and other health risk behaviours using a novel telephone-delivered intervention for homeless people: a proof-of-concept study.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Despite substantial health disadvantage, few intervention studies have examined ways to deliver smoking cessation support to homeless people. This proof-of-concept study explored the feasibility and acceptability of a novel, low-cost, telephone-delivered program. DESIGN AND METHODS: Clients aged over 18 years, English-speaking and currently receiving accommodation support from a homelessness outreach centre were invited to participate in a 'Phone for Health' program. Six sessions conducted once per week provided participants with personalised counselling about smoking c

Differentiating characteristics of deafblindness and autism in people with congenital deafblindness and profound intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: In persons with deafblindness, it is hard to distinguish autism spectrum disorders from several deafblind specific behaviours caused by the dual sensory impairments, especially when these persons are also intellectually disabled. As a result, there is an over-diagnosis of autism in persons who are deafblind leading to unsuitable interventions. METHODS: Autism as specified by the DSM-IV was studied in 10 persons with congenital deafblindness with profound intellectual disabilities. Behaviours of people with deafblindness and autism (n = 5) and of people with deafblindness without a

A push or a punch: distinguishing the severity of sibling violence.

Sibling violence is the most prevalent and least studied form of family violence, and little research has examined differences based on severity. This research examines more severe versus less severe forms of sibling violence. Using a subsample of married couples with two or more children ages 0 to 17 drawn from the 1976 National Survey of Physical Violence in American Families, the authors employ Conflict Tactics Scale items for child-to-child conflict to construct a measure of sibling violence severity. Drawing from several theoretical perspectives on family violence and peer aggression, the

Reactive attachment disorder in maltreated twins follow-up: from 18 months to 8 years.

The best means for the diagnosis and treatment of reactive attachment disorder of infancy and early childhood have not been established. Though some longitudinal data on institutionalized children is available, reports of maltreated young children who are followed over time and assessed with measures of attachment are lacking. This paper presents the clinical course of a set of maltreated fraternal twins who were assessed and treated from 19 months to 30 months of age and then seen in follow-up at 3 and 8 years of age. A summary of the early assessment and course is provided and findings from

[Harry Potter--the trauma as a drive for psychic development].

The Harry Potter books are centered around the psychic development of a traumatised young boy starting from his internalised early experience of being loved by his mother to the sudden loss of both of his parents at the anal stage and the later cumulative traumatisation by being negleced and mistreated by his relatives up to the present times. By identifying with his father and other father replacements Harry Potter finally acquires self-assurance and wins new friends. Harry goes through different stages of initiation into the adult world with all its conflicts and rivalries but also friendshi

Earned-secure attachment status in retrospect and prospect.

Past research with the Berkeley Adult Attachment Interview demonstrates that retrospectively defined earned-secures (who coherently describe negative childhood experiences) parent as effectively as do continuous-secures (who coherently describe positive childhood experiences), but manifest liabilities in the form of depressive symptomatology. This article presents data from a 23-year longitudinal study that replicate and extend prior research, testing a key premise that earned-secures so defined actually have a history of insecure attachments that change over time and/or endure consistently ha

Social functioning of patients with schizophrenia in high-income welfare societies.

OBJECTIVE: The study assessed the level of reintegration into the community of patients with schizophrenia in Oslo, Norway, a country with a well-developed social welfare system and low unemployment rates. METHODS: Eighty-one patients with a DSM-III-R diagnosis of schizophrenia treated in 1980 and in 1983 in a short-term ward of a psychiatric hospital were followed up after seven years. Seventy-four of 76 patients alive at follow-up agreed to participate. Social functioning was measured by the Strauss-Carpenter Level of Functioning Scale and the Social Adjustment Scale. RESULTS: At follow-up
