PURPOSE: To determine the reproducibility of intraocular lens (IOL) decentration and tilt measurements with a new Purkinje meter instrument.
SETTING: Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, London, United Kingdom.
METHODS: After pupil dilation, images of pseudophakic eyes with a plate-style IOL (Akreos Adapt) were obtained using a recently developed Purkinje meter. Intraocular lens decentration and tilt were evaluated by analyzing the captured images using a semiobjective method by marking the reflexes in the images and automatic calculation using a dedicated software program. We report 2 cases of toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS) resulting from impurities in generic trypan blue that was administered intracamerally to improve visualization of the capsule. Histology of the corneal buttons revealed foci of inflammatory response and complete loss of endothelial cells. Cell culture analysis showed that the generic trypan blue was approximately twice as toxic to the endothelium as a proprietary trypan blue. Ophthalmologists should be aware that any substance administered intraocularly can be a source of complications, and they should know the source of all material

BACKGROUND: Postoperative bacterial endophthalmitis is caused by the patient's endogenous flora in most cases (80 %). Pasteurella multocida (PM) is a Gram-negative coccobacillus found in the upper respiratory tract of dogs and cats and is very rarely implicated in postoperative endophthalmitis.
HISTORY AND SIGNS: We describe a case of PM endophthalmitis that developed after cataract surgery.
THERAPY AND OUTCOME: Cultures of both the conjunctiva and the aqueous humor were positive for PM. Topical, intravitreous and intravenous antibiotics were administered. Despite treatment, the outcome was

PURPOSE: To present a complex surgical technique used for the management of luxated crystalline lenses and evaluate treatment results.
SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University of Lodz, Lodz, Poland.
METHODS: This prospective study involved 29 consecutive patients (30 eyes) with the mean age of 60.3 years. The applied surgical technique comprised pars plana vitrectomy, perfluorocarbon liquid injection, and crystalline lens phacofragmentation in the vitreous cavity. Simultaneously, anterior chamber intraocular lenses (IOLs) were implanted in 10 eyes, and scleral-fixated posteri

SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, University of Vienna Medical School, Vienna, Austria.
METHOD: In a prospective study, a Collamer CC4204BF IOL was implanted in 30 eyes of patients with senile cataract. A standardized surgical technique and postoperative regimen were applied. To assess uveal biocompatibility, cellular inflammation on the anterior IOL surface was evaluated with a specular microscope. Capsular bio

AIM: To compare the efficacy of goniosynechialysis (GSL) under a microscope alone (GM) and under direct gonioscopy (GG) for chronic angle-closure glaucoma (CACG) coexisted with cataract.
METHODS: A prospective, single-center, and randomized controlled trial was conducted. Patients diagnosed as CACG and cataract were randomly allocated into either GM group or GG group. In GM group, the range of peripheral anterior synechiae (PAS) was confirmed through gonio-lens after phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation (PEI). PAS was separated only under a microscope. After separating the c

Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies have recently gained momentum in medical education and show particular promise for ophthalmic surgical training. VR creates immersive, computer-generated environments for simulated learning, whereas AR enhances the real-world by superimposing interactive digital elements. Traditional microsurgical training relies on wet-lab practice using model or cadaver eyes, as well as operative experience on live patients. The educational value of wet-lab training often depends on time-intensive direct supervision by a senior surgeon, while early

BACKGROUND: For patients with both cataract and pterygium, combined surgery reduces the burden and cost associated with two separate procedures. However, the accuracy of intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation is compromised in eyes with pterygium, as the lesion disturbs the corneal surface and tear film, leading to erroneous keratometry measurements. This often results in unpredictable postoperative refraction and a tendency toward myopic shift. Therefore, developing a reliable method to determine true corneal power for IOL calculation in such eyes is essential to improve refractive outcomes

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of second-stage phacoemulsification (PE) of complicated initial cataract after vitreoretinal surgery (VRS) in patients with advanced proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR).
METHODS: Totally 216 patients with PDR and complicated initial cataract who underwent surgery were included. These patients were divided into four groups according to their management. In the 1st group patients were subjected to a two-step surgical procedure: VRS with silicone oil tamponade was performed as the first step, followed by the second step, PE+intraocular lens (IOL) implantation+s
