BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies (CA) are a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality, especially in developing countries. Data on these anomalies are still poorly collated in developing countries. We aimed to assess the prevalence, pattern, risk factors and outcome of congenital anomalies among neonatal admissions in Ogbomoso Town, Nigeria.
METHODS: A cross-sectional retrospective study in which a review of the records of all neonates admitted in the neonatal unit of the Bowen University Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso over a five-year period (January 2012-December 2016) was undertaken. Th…

Rabid dog exposures result in > 99% of human rabies deaths worldwide. Ninety-eight percent of these cases occur in developing countries. Thus, the best protection against human rabies would be prevention through adequate vaccination of the reservoir population. The difficulty in re-locating ownerless, freely roaming dogs for booster vaccinations, in addition to poor coverage with inadequate vaccines, suggests that a potentially inexpensive vaccine that elicits long-term protection after a single-dose could improve control of canine rabies in developing countries. One solution could be a DNA va…

BACKGROUND: Equality of health status is the health equity goal being pursued in developed countries and advocated by development agencies such as WHO and The Rockefeller Foundation for developing countries also. Other concepts of fair distribution of health such as equity of access to medical care may not be sufficient to equalise health outcomes but, nevertheless, they may be more practical and effective in advancing health equity in developing countries. METHODS: A framework for relating health equity goals to development strategies allowing progressive redistribution of primary health care…

Invasive fungal infections are severe infections and constantly rising in developed countries. Indeed, advances in hematology, oncology, tra … cies/isolates to usual treatments, and other fungi (Mucorales, Scedosporium, Fusarium). However, in developing countries where access to HAART is limited, cryptococcosis remains a major public health. To a lesser degree, some endemic mycoses are on the rise.

Central nervous system tuberculosis (CNS TB), uncommon in developed countries, still constitutes a significant proportion of brain mass lesions in developing countries. With the consistent increase in TB in the third world and the increase in immigration to Western countries, we can also expect to see an increase in the incidence of CNS TB. We present a case of cerebral TB in a patient two years after immigrating to Canada. A timely diagnosis of cerebral TB was even more complicated in this patient, who was known to have chronic migraine. There was no evidence of pulmonary involvement and the …

BACKGROUND: Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) is a major cause of mortality in PICUs in industrialized countries. As developing countries become more advanced, PICU care comes into reach. The aim of this study was to examine MODS in a PICU in China in comparison with other countries.
METHODS: A retrospective 5-year audit (2001-2006) of MODS cases in a 6-bed PICU in the Second Hospital of Lanzhou University, China.
RESULTS: Of the 332 PICU patients, 176 (53%) had MODS; the mean age was 35 months, and 60% were <1 year of age. Infectious diseases were the predominant factor underlying …

The differential diagnosis of eosinophilia is broad and constitutes a major challenge for both, the general practitioner and the hematologist. Whereas in developing countries secondary eosinophilia is commonly caused by parasitic infections, in Western and European countries eosinophilia is more often associated with atopic diseases or drug-related. This case-report presents an asymptomatic patient with marked persisting eosinophilia caused by Strongyloidiasis in whom parasitic stool examinations were repeatedly negative and infection could only be established by serologic testing.

To leptospirosis is the commonest spirocheatal infection in the tropical and temperate countries of Indian sub-continent and Africa and the most common zoonosis worldwide. The protean manifestation of this infectious disease is a challenge for practising clinicians across the world. In poor developing countries, at most clinical suspicion it is essential in the diagnosis of this disease. In this report, we are able to document two uncommon manifestations of leptospirosis, namely Sweet's syndrome and central nervous system vasculitis.

BACKGROUND: Children with disabilities face many barriers to early childhood development services and to pre-primary education. Evidence on inclusive school readiness and community-based approaches in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) still remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the feasibility and acceptability of a co-designed training programme for caregivers to support school readiness among children aged 4-6 years in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Tanzania.
METHODS: We conducted an evaluation using 16 focus group discussions with caregivers including those with children with disabilities

BACKGROUND: With more than 2 million children living in group homes, or "institutions", worldwide, the extent to which institution-based caregiving negatively affects development and wellbeing is a central question for international policymakers.
METHODS: A two-stage random sampling methodology identified community representative samples of 1,357 institution-dwelling orphaned and separated children (OSC) and 1,480 family-dwelling OSC aged 6-12 from 5 low and middle income countries. Data were collected from children and their primary caregivers. Survey-analytic techniques and linear mixed eff

In developed countries, children with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) or born preterm (PT) tend to achieve catch-up growth. There is little information about height catch-up in developing countries and about height catch-down in both developed and developing countries. We studied the effect of IUGR and PT birth on height catch-up and catch-down growth of children from two cohorts of liveborn singletons. Data from 1,463 children was collected at birth and at school age in Ribeirão Preto (RP), a more developed city, and in São Luís (SL), a less developed city. A change in z-score between …

We aimed to determine the prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis among internally displaced children in Maiduguri, Nigeria. Data on the children's sociodemographic characteristics and risk factors for schistosomiasis were collected, over a period of six months, using an interview-based questionnaire. Ten milliliter of urine sample was collected from each child and investigated for hematuria and ova of Schistosoma haematobium. Two hundred and thirty-eight of 385 children had urinary schistosomiasis (62.0%); of this, 125 (53.0%) were males, with a male:female ratio of 1.1:1. Urinary schistosomias

Plant-produced vaccines and therapeutic agents offer enormous potential for providing relief to developing countries by reducing the incidence of infant mortality caused by infectious diseases. Vaccines derived from plants have been demonstrated to effectively elicit an immune response. Biopharmaceuticals produced in plants are inexpensive to produce, require fewer expensive purification steps, and can be stored at ambient temperatures for prolonged periods of time. As a result, plant-produced biopharmaceuticals have the potential to be more accessible to the rural poor. This review describes …

Tuberculosis (TB), smoking, HIV and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are burgeoning epidemics in developing countries. The link between TB and HIV is well established. Less well recognised is the strong relationship between tobacco smoking and the development and natural history of TB. These associations are of considerable relevance to public health and disease outcomes in individuals with TB. Moreover, tobacco smoking, a modifiable risk factor, is associated with poorer outcomes in HIV-associated opportunistic infections, of which TB is the commonest in developing countries. It i…

Hepatitis A is an important cause of acute hepatitis in travelers to developing countries. In 1991, 33 million persons living in industrialized countries traveled to developing countries where hepatitis A is highly endemic (World Tourism Organization, unpublished data, 1993). Reports indicate that 40-50% of cases of hepatitis A infection in the United Kingdom,1 Switzerland2 and Sweden3 are associated with recent international travel. The disease is usually benign, but the severity increases with age.4 Because the disease is enterically transmitted, occurrence is related to water quality and le…
