How do the top 10 known offending drug classes associated with decreased bone mineral density affect total shoulder arthroplasty outcomes?

BACKGROUND: Many regularly prescribed classes of drugs are known to negatively impact bone health. However, it is unclear if perioperative use of these drugs impacts total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) outcomes. The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of perioperative use of 10 drug classes with known negative effects on bone health on prosthesis-related outcomes of TSA. METHODS: Patients who underwent primary TSA were retrospectively identified in the PearlDiver database. Within this population, patients prescribed proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), thiazolidinediones (TZDs), loop diur

Complications of radiation therapy.

The skeletal effects of radiation are dependent upon many variables, but the pathologic features are consistent. Radiation may cause immediate or delayed cell death, cellular injury with recovery, arrest of cellular division, or abnormal repair with neoplasia. Radiation necrosis and radiation-induced neoplasm still occur despite the use of supervoltage therapy. Complications of radiotherapy are well known and have led to more judicious use of this therapeutic modality. With few exceptions, benign bone tumors are no longer treated with irradiation. Radiation necrosis may be difficult to differe

Increasing Trend in Pediatric Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Injuries Presenting to US Emergency Departments and an Injury Profile - A 10-Year Analysis.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is an increasingly popular martial arts discipline. Yet, BJJ injuries remain understudied in light of increasing popularity. In particular, pediatric injuries have a dearth of literature examining epidemiologic trends and injury profiles. As such, this study's purpose was to evaluate trends in pediatric Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) injuries over a 10-year period and formulate an injury profile. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database was queried for martial arts related injuries from January 1, 20

Vaping and Orthopaedic Surgery: A scoping review of the literature.

Over the past decade, vaping has grown in popularity among adolescents and young adults. Much remains unknown regarding its effects on orthopaedic surgery. This scoping review expands upon previous reviews by evaluating updated literature from 2025 and including evaluation of orthopaedic injuries caused by vaping accidents. A search was conducted across seven databases. The search used a combination of keywords and Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms. Titles and abstracts were screened for eligibility for inclusion criteria. Full texts were screened and included if they met criteria. Demograp

Canals and grooves for the supraclavicular nerves revisited: Anatomical and radiological study outlining their topography for clinical practice.

OBJECTIVES: Supraclavicular nerves cross the clavicle to provide sensory innervation to the skin over the clavicle, ventromedial shoulder region and upper part of the thorax. Although rare, they may variably perforate the clavicle throughout their course. Since the current literature lacks a comprehensive analysis of the resultant canals and grooves for the supraclavicular nerves, this study aimed to provide detailed morphometric and topographical data for clinical practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 524 dry clavicles and 200 CT images were assessed for the presence of canals or groove

Forensic Death Investigations of Dog Bite Injuries in 31 Cats.

Animal bite injuries are common in free-ranging cats in Taiwan, and most fatal animal bite events are presumed to be caused by dogs. However, speculation regarding animal abuse may occur when carcasses with prominent injuries are found by members of the general public. Local animal protection offices and veterinary clinicians sometimes face difficulties in convincing these individuals by identifying specific features of dog bite injuries in cat carcasses. Therefore, the present study analyzed injury patterns and distribution in 31 necropsied cats with animal bite injuries, and applied deoxyrib

Cancer pain (classification and pain syndromes).

Inspite the new informations about the physiology and biochemistry of pain, it remains true that pain is only partially understood. Cancer pain is often experienced as several different types of pain, with combined somatic and neuropathic types the most frequently. If the acute cancer pain does not subside with initial therapy, patients experience pain of more constant nature, the characteristics of wich vary with the cause and the involved sites. Chronic pain related to cancer can be considered as tumor-induced pain, chemotherapy-induced pain, and radiation therapy-induced pain. Certain pain

Surgical treatment and outcomes of trans-ulnar basal coronoid fracture-dislocations.

BACKGROUND: Trans-ulnar fracture-dislocations of the elbow are complex injuries that can be difficult to classify and treat. Trans-ulnar basal coronoid injuries, in which the coronoid is not attached to either the olecranon or the metaphysis, present substantial challenges to achieve anatomic reduction and stable internal fixation. The purpose of this study was to analyze the outcome of surgical treatment of trans-ulnar basal coronoid fracture-dislocations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2002 and 2019, 32 consecutive trans-ulnar basal coronoid fracture-dislocations underwent open reduction an

Risk of radial head arthroplasty revision is correlated with radial head diameter: a multicenter analysis of 405 cases.

BACKGROUND: Radial head arthroplasty (RHA) is commonly used for the treatment of comminuted radial head fractures. Indications as well as implant types continue to evolve. RHA has had good outcomes with midterm longevity. The literature is limited to small case series with varying implant types, and larger studies are needed to determine the optimal implant type and radial head diameter. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of RHA cases performed by 75 surgeons at 14 medical centers in an integrated health care system between 2006 and 2017 was completed. Patient demographics, comorbidities, impl

Bi-columnar locking plate fixation through a combined medial and lateral approach for the treatment of low transcondylar fractures of the distal humerus in the elderly.

BACKGROUND: Low transcondylar fractures (LTFs) of the distal humerus are relatively uncommon elbow injuries in elderly patients after low-energy injuries. Although there is still debate regarding the method of fixation, several surgeons prefer bi-columnar fixation using pre-contoured locking plates. However, posterior approaches, which are usually used to perform the above procedure, have disadvantages, such as ulnar nerve neuropathy, damage to the extensor mechanism, and the need for general anesthesia. To solve these problems, the authors designed a combined medial and lateral approach. The
