Vertebral fracture during one repetition maximum testing in a breast cancer survivor: A case report.

RATIONALE: One repetition maximum (1-RM) testing is a standard strength assessment procedure in clinical exercise intervention trials. Because no adverse events (AEs) are published, expert panels usually consider it safe for patient populations. However, we here report a vertebral fracture during 1-RM testing. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 69-year-old breast cancer survivor (body-mass-index 31.6 kg/m2), 3 months after primary therapy, underwent 1-RM testing within an exercise intervention trial. At the leg press, she experienced pain accompanied by a soft crackling. DIAGNOSIS: Imaging revealed a parti

The safety and feasibility of minimal invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) of the posterior aspect of the humerus: A cadaveric study.

The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility of applying MIPO of the humerus via the posterior approach and to observe the tension of the radial nerve in different elbow positions. Two separate incisions were made on the posterior aspect of the humerus in ten fresh cadavers (20 humeri). The radial nerve was identified at the proximal incision and the distances through which the nerve could be elevated from the bone with the elbow in flexion and extension were measured. A 10-hole extra-articular distal humeral locking compression plate was inserted and fixed through the submuscular tu

Magnetic resonance imaging features of esthesioneuroblastoma in three dogs and one cat.

OBJECTIVE: Esthesioneuroblastoma is a rare malignant intranasal tumor that originates from the olfactory neuroepithelium of the upper nasal cavity, and can destroy the cribriform plate and expand into the neurocranium. Descriptions of the magnetic resonance features of esthesioneuroblastomas in animals are scarce. The objectives of this study were to report the magnetic resonance imaging features of esthesioneuroblastomas in order to determine distinct imaging characteristics that may help distinguish it from other intracranial tumor types. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Magnetic resonance images of f

Pediatric distal forearm and wrist injury: an imaging review.

Injuries to the pediatric distal forearm and wrist have myriad manifestations. Growth plate injuries can occur in the skeletally immature child. An unfused growth plate is less robust than ligamentous complexes and therefore is more easily injured. The Salter-Harris fracture classification system is used to grade physeal injuries based on their imaging appearance. This grading has prognostic significance: higher grades imply an increased likelihood of eventual growth disturbance. A disrupted distal radioulnar joint characterizes Galeazzi-type injuries at all ages; however, before skeletal matu

Reconstruction of composite tibial defect with free flaps and ipsilateral vascularized fibular transposition.

Composite defects of the tibia following open fractures are among the most challenging of clinical problems. The aim of this study is to report the results of treatment using a free flap procedure followed by ipsilateral vascularized fibular transposition (IVFT) for reconstruction of composite tibial defects. Ten patients underwent a free flap procedure followed by IVFT and plating. The mean size of the flaps was 12.1 × 6 cm(2). The mean length of bone defect was 5.35 cm. IVFT were performed 4.3 months following the free flap. Patients were followed for an average of 3.4 years. All flaps survi

Eye and neural defects associated with loss of GDF6.

BACKGROUND: In Xenopus the bone morphogenetic protein growth and differentiation factor 6 (GDF6) is expressed at the edge of the neural plate, and within the anterior neural plate including the eye fields. Here we address the role of GDF6 in neural and eye development by morpholino knockdown experiments. RESULTS: We show that depletion of GDF6 (BMP13) resulted in a reduction in eye size, loss of laminar structure and a reduction in differentiated neural cell types within the retina. This correlated with a reduction in staining for Smad1/5/8 phosphorylation indicating a decrease in GDF6 signal

[Acute PIP joint fractures].

Recent PIP fractures are challenging trauma in terms of diagnosis as well as treatment. It must be remembered that the final outcome will have a considerable impact on the global finger and hand function. Immediate mobilization and rehabilitation are mandatory, and may justify a surgical approach and fixation in selected cases. A good understanding of the fracture type is essential and relies in good part on precise, focused and standardized radiographs. Non-displaced fractures are generally treated conservatively. In the proximal phalanx, the orientation of the fracture line dictates the stab

Effects of fibroblast growth factor-2 on longitudinal bone growth.

In vivo, fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) inhibits longitudinal bone growth. Similarly, activating FGF receptor 3 mutations impair growth in achondroplasia and thanatophoric dysplasia. To investigate the underlying mechanisms, we chose a fetal rat metatarsal organ culture system that would maintain growth plate histological architecture. Addition of FGF-2 to the serum-free medium inhibited longitudinal growth. We next assessed each major component of longitudinal growth: proliferation, cellular hypertrophy, and cartilage matrix synthesis. Surprisingly, FGF-2 stimulated proliferation, as asse

Modified Posterior Approach for Scapular Body Non-union: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Scapular fractures are rare and usually unite with conservative treatment. Symptomatic non-union of the scapular body is exceptionally uncommon and can lead to chronic pain and functional limitation. CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old female with a right scapular body fracture initially treated non-operatively developed persistent posterior shoulder pain and radiographic non-union at 1 year. She underwent open reduction and internal fixation using a modified posterior midline approach with dual 3.5-mm reconstruction plates and autologous iliac crest cancellous bone grafting. CONCLUSION

Calvarial Tuberculosis in a Preschool-Aged Child: An uncommon entity.

Calvarial tuberculosis is a rare manifestation of tuberculosis, especially in children under five years of age. We report a two-and-a-half-year-old male child who presented to the Nilratan Sircar Medical College, Kolkata, India, in 2015 with frontoparietal fluctuant swelling of three months' duration. He had also had chronic sinus discharge from the left lower eyelid over the previous six months. Computed tomography of the head revealed a frontal swelling along with erosion of both the outer and inner plates of the left frontal bone. Fine needle aspiration of the pus indicated the presence of

[Surgical treatment of mandibular fractures in its portions of the body and angle].

The data about surgical treatment efficacy for mandibular fractures in portions of the body and the angle, depending on the trauma character and the method of osteosynthesis applied, were adduced. The main criteria, according to which the surgical interventions efficacy was estimated, were: the reposition accuracy, stability of the fragments fixation invasiveness, and the operation duration, The results of treatment of biomechanically-favorable linear fractures, occurring perpendilular to the mandibular axis, are trustworthy better (P < 0.05) than such of biomechanically-unfavorable oblique, f

Ankle fractures in elderly patients.

The incidence of ankle fractures (AFs) in the elderly is rising due to the increase in life expectancy. Rather than directly related to osteoporosis, AFs are a predictor of osteoporotic fractures in other sites. In women AFs are associated with weight and BMI. AFs are difficult to categorize; therapeutic options are non-operative treatment with plaster casts or surgical treatment with Kirschner's wires, plates and screws. The choice of treatment should be based not only on the fracture type but also on the local and general comorbidity of the patient. Considering the new evidence that postmeno

Surgical treatment of ankle and foot fractures in the elderly.

Ankle fractures are the most common lower extremity fractures. In younger age groups these fractures occur more often in men than in women, but after menopause there is a female predominance. Foot fractures show a similar trend. The primary goal in the treatment of ankle and foot fractures is to obtain exact reduction and stable fixation to facilitate early mobilization and good functional recovery. However, the need for internal fixation to secure fracture reduction must be weighed against the risk of operating on osteoporotic bone which lacks the strength to hold screws and plates. In the el
