A 12-year follow-up of a treated cocaine-dependent sample.

The study examined long-term outcomes (mortality, substance use, mental health, employment, criminal involvement) among a cocaine-dependent sample. This 12-year follow-up study, conducted in 2002-2003, updates information obtained at intake and two face-to-face interviews conducted in 1990-1991 and 1991-1992 among 321 male cocaine-dependent veterans admitted to drug treatment in 1988-1989. At the 2002-2003 follow-up, 28 had died and 266 were interviewed. A mixed model examining the longitudinal relationships demonstrated that treatment was associated with lower levels of cocaine use over the 1

Further evidence of an association between behavioral inhibition and anxiety disorders: results from a family study of children from a non-clinical sample.

Behavioral inhibition to the unfamiliar, identifiable in early childhood and reflecting the tendency to exhibit withdrawal and excessive autonomic arousal to challenge or novelty, has been found to be prevalent in young offspring of parents with panic disorder and agoraphobia and associated with risk for anxiety disorders in these children. Using family study methodology, we now examine psychopathology in first degree relatives of children from a non-clinical longitudinal cohort identified at 21 months of age as inhibited (N = 22) or uninhibited (N = 19) and followed through the age of seven y

Generational compression and the shifting anchors of identity: a photo-elicitation nostalgia narrative study of identity construction across three generations in an Oroqen family.

Drawing on the mutual constitution framework in cultural psychology, this study explores how three generations of an Oroqen family construct ethnic identity through nostalgic narratives elicited by family photographs. The Oroqen, one of China's smallest ethnic minority groups, with a population of only 9,168, offer a rare example of rapid cultural change. In the span of only three generations, or roughly 80 years, they moved from a forest-based hunting and gathering way of life into full participation in a digital society. Using reflexive thematic analysis, the analysis examined in-depth inter

Exploration of treatment burden during transition onto kidney replacement therapy: A longitudinal qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: People with kidney disease who need to transition onto kidney replacement therapy (KRT) face a life-changing diagnosis. This process involves complex decisions about treatment and a high volume of healthcare work. Little work has been done looking at KRT transition through the lens of treatment burden. This study aims to explore how treatment burden evolves during KRT transition in a population recruited from a large nephrology and kidney transplant unit in Glasgow, Scotland. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Serial in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 30 participants across up

The Space Between Action and Reflection: Nursing Students' Experiences of Debriefing Timing.

INTRODUCTION: Debriefing is widely regarded as a central component of simulation-based learning, yet limited attention has been given to how the timing of debriefing is experienced by learners in undergraduate courses that include graded simulation. METHODS: An interpretive qualitative study situated within a constructivist epistemological perspective was conducted. Semi-structured interviews were completed with 10 third-year undergraduate nursing students enrolled in a course that included simulation-based learning. Interviews explored participants' experiences of simulation, perceptions of

Understanding chronic pelvic pain in women survivors of sexual violence: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) affects an estimated 14.8% of UK women. Survivors of sexual violence are more likely to experience CPP, but the relationship is complex and underexplored. Shame and stigma from both experiences may interact and influence help-seeking. AIMS: To broaden understanding of how women survivors of sexual violence make personal meaning of CPP, and to consider clinical implications of findings. DESIGN & SETTING: A qualitative study of UK community-recruited women who have survived sexual violence and who experience chronic pelvic pain (CPP). METHOD: Ten particip

Social media mediation in adolescent and young adult cancer experiences: a qualitative study integrating lived and clinical perspectives.

PURPOSE: Adolescents and young adults with cancer face psychosocial challenges as illness disrupts developmental transitions. Social media may provide information, connection and emotional support, but their role in cancer care remains poorly understood and is often framed primarily in terms of risk. This study examined social media use as a psychological, social and temporal mediating process. METHODS: A qualitative design combined netnographic observation of TikTok content with semi-structured interviews. Four TikTok accounts documenting cancer experiences among adolescents and young adults

A Qualitative Needs Assessment for Pediatric Care Partnerships in Community Emergency Departments.

OBJECTIVES: Most pediatric emergency care in the United States occurs within community emergency departments (CEDs). CEDs often rely on pediatric academic medical centers (PAMCs) for specialty consultation and care continuation. These collaborations may be conduits for CEDs to enhance delivery of pediatric care. We sought to explore the experiences of CEDs with the provision of pediatric care and their perspectives on ways a PAMC can provide support. METHODS: We used phenomenological qualitative techniques to explore lived experiences of health care leaders of CEDs. We purposefully sampled nu

Bystanding to prevent drink-driving: Young adults' descriptions of factors that promote and restrict their behavior.

INTRODUCTION: Drink driving remains a leading contributor to motor-vehicle fatalities. For young adults, a sizeable proportion of their drinking is with friends, who may have opportunity to plan ahead or potentially intervene and speak up against drink-driving. We sought to explore young adults' preventive behaviors toward friends and the potential relevance for the classic Latané and Darley social psychology theory of bystander intervention. METHOD: Across two studies we interviewed 63, 18-25-year-old Australians, using semi-structured interview schedules (approximately 30-45 min). Study 1 f

"I expected to be called 'mother': exploring mental health needs of bereaved mothers in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Tanzania has among the highest rates of stillbirth and neonatal death globally, yet little is known about the mental health impact of such loss on mothers. Cultural stigma, silence around grief, and limited access to psychosocial support compound these challenges. This study explores the experiences of bereaved Tanzanian mothers, focusing on mental health symptoms, social support, and preferred forms of post-loss care. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC) in Moshi, Tanzania. Fifty women (25 with stillbirth, 25 with ne

Therapy-facilitated integration responsibility: qualitative interviews with refugee psychotherapy clients in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Many refugees experience substantial pre-, peri- and post-migration stress resulting in high prevalence rates of mental disorders. Additionally, refugees face significant challenges integrating into their host society. Even though access to psychotherapy for refugees might impact the integration process beneficially, research on refugees' perspectives on psychotherapy, integration and the interaction with emotional distress is limited. This study explores refugees' perspectives on how psychotherapy may influence their integration process and enhance their psychological well-being.
