Maxillary sinus grafting with Bio-Oss or Straumann Bone Ceramic: histomorphometric results from a randomized controlled multicenter clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: This investigation was designed to compare the histomorphometric results from sinus floor augmentation with anorganic bovine bone (ABB) and a new biphasic calcium phosphate, Straumann Bone Ceramic (BCP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight maxillary sinuses were treated in 37 patients. Residual bone width was > or =6 mm and height was > or =3 mm and <8 mm. Lateral sinus augmentation was used, with grafting using either ABB (control group; 23 sinuses) or BCP (test group; 25 sinuses); sites were randomly assigned to the control or test groups. After 180-240 days of healing, implant

Interventions for replacing missing teeth: alveolar ridge preservation techniques for dental implant site development.

BACKGROUND: Alveolar bone changes following tooth extraction can compromise prosthodontic rehabilitation. Alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) has been proposed to limit these changes and improve prosthodontic and aesthetic outcomes when implants are used. This is an update of the Cochrane Review first published in 2015. OBJECTIVES: To assess the clinical effects of various materials and techniques for ARP after tooth extraction compared with extraction alone or other methods of ARP, or both, in patients requiring dental implant placement following healing of extraction sockets. SEARCH METHODS:

Vascularized interpositional periosteal connective tissue flap: A comprehensive review.

Nowadays, esthetics plays an important role in dentistry, along with the function of the prosthesis. The prosthetic replacement of the missing tooth should be in harmony with the adjacent natural dentition to fulfill the esthetic demand of the patient, especially in the anterior region. Alveolar ridge defects following tooth extraction can be corrected, and various techniques can be used to restore the lost alveolar hard and soft tissues. The newer technique, the vascularized interpositional periosteal connective tissue (VIP-CT) flap, has been introduced, which has the potential to augment the

Oral Rehabilitation of Adult Edentulous Siblings Severely Lacking Alveolar Bone Due to Ectodermal Dysplasia: A Report of 2 Clinical Cases and a Literature Review.

The oral conditions of adult edentulous patients with ectodermal dysplasia (ED) often lead to decreased physical and psychological health, and the negative effects can become as extreme as social and psychological isolation. However, restoring oral function of adult edentulous patients with ED using zygomatic implants (ZIs) or conventional implants (CIs) remains challenging for dentists because of the severe atrophy of these patients' alveolar ridges. This report describes 2 cases of adult edentulous siblings with ED; they exhibited severe alveolar bone atrophy and were treated with ZIs and CI

Simultaneous implant placement in sinus floor augmentation using iliac bone block grafts in severe maxillary atrophies: case report.

The placement of implants requires adequate basic conditions. Insufficient bone height and width in the area of the maxilla, because of expansion of the maxillary sinus and atrophic resorption of the alveolar ridge, represent a common anatomical complication, which can be solved by augmentation of the floor of the maxillary sinus. It is commonly shared that autologous bone graft is the gold standard method in the augmentation of the Higmoro antrum. The reconstruction of atrophies with adequate bone volume and density has become a viable treatment option with high predictability and success rat

Vertical ridge augmentation using the modified shell technique--a case series.

Vertical defects of the alveolar crest often restrict the placement of implants. The outcome of vertical augmentation is unpredictable so we aimed to develop a technique that has predictable results. We used autogenous grafts trimmed to shells less than 1mm thick to rebuild the vertical dimensions of the alveolar ridge. The shells were fixed with microscrews and the vertical space between the shell and the residual bone was filled with autogenous particulate bone. Vertical dimensions before and after augmentation were measured and descriptive statistics calculated. A total of 17 patients (10 f

Multidisciplinary treatment approach for enhancement of implant esthetics.

A "team approach" that includes different specialties from the initial stages of implant treatment is important to achieve predictable and esthetically pleasing outcomes in compromised dental replacement cases. This report describes a severely compromised case that was properly managed by the combined efforts of a team of specialists. Briefly, prior to tooth extraction, orthodontic forced eruption was applied to coronally displace the attachment apparatus (i.e., hard and soft tissues). Then, atraumatic tooth extraction together with immediate implant placement was performed. The "sandwich bone

Safety and Efficacy Results of BonoFill First-in-Human, Phase I/IIa Clinical Trial for the Maxillofacial Indication of Sinus Augmentation and Mandibular Bone Void Filling.

PURPOSE: The gold standard for bone regeneration of bone deficiencies is still an autologous bone graft, which has considerable disadvantages; namely, the need for a second major surgery and the limited volume of bone available for harvesting. BonoFill (BF) is a novel, tissue-engineered, bone graft with intrinsic osteoinductive, osteoconductive, and osteogenic properties, consisting of the patient's own adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells, attached to hydroxyapatite particles. Here, we present the safety and efficacy results of BF first-in-human clinical study for maxillofacial bone

Evaluation of the posterior superior alveolar artery and the maxillary sinus with CBCT.

Assessment of the maxillary sinus anatomy before sinus augmentation is important for avoiding surgical complications, because of the close anatomical relationship between the posterior maxillary teeth and the maxillary sinus. The posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA) is the branch of the maxillary artery that supplies the lateral sinus wall and overlying membrane. We evaluated the location of the PSAA and its relationship to the alveolar ridge and maxillary sinus using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). The study group consisted of 135 CBCT scans (270 sinuses) obtained from the archive
