A narrative review of qualitative studies exploring the normalization of gambling for youth and younger adults.

Gambling is a highly visible and socially embedded activity among young people, with marketing, social practices, and digital platforms shaping perceptions and behaviours. This article presents a narrative review of qualitative studies (2015-25) exploring how gambling is normalized among youth and younger adults (up to 35 years), and how they perceive and respond to these processes. Four themes were constructed from n = 22 articles using a reflexive approach to thematic analysis. First, gambling was socially constructed as a normative activity through early family exposure and peer group pract

Early incorporation of body capital in adolescent beauty culture: A qualitative study of the 'Sephora Kids' phenomenon.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescence is a developmental stage in which identity formation, bodily self-awareness, and social evaluation intensify, increasingly within digital and consumer environments. In recent years, growing attention has been directed toward the so-called "Sephora Kids" phenomenon, referring to children and early adolescents who engage in advanced skincare routines, use premium cosmetic products, and emulate adult beauty influencers through social media platforms. Despite its visibility in media discourse, empirical research on this phenomenon remains limited. This study explores how ado

Acral and digital angioleiomyomata: 14-year experience at the Cleveland Clinic and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Angioleiomyoma is a benign neoplasm thought to derive from the tunica media of small venous vessels. Angioleiomyomata most frequently occur in the lower extremities with less common occurrences on the trunk, head and upper extremities. Few cases of acral and digital angioleiomyoma have been described in the literature. METHODS: We add a series of 21 patients with acral angioleiomyoma including 6 cases of digital angioleiomyoma to the body of clinical and histological findings along with a review of the literature of digital angioleiomyomata. RESULTS: Digital angioleiomyoma are eq

Albuminuria and carotid atherosclerosis as predictors of cognitive function in a general population.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Albuminuria and carotid atherosclerosis are predictors of cardiovascular disease and potential predictors of cognitive decline. Our aim was to study whether albuminuria was an early predictor of cognitive function independent of carotid atherosclerosis in a general population. METHODS: The study population comprised 1,577 adults without self-reported stroke. In 1994 and 2007 all were screened for cardiovascular risk factors, urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (ACR), carotid intima-media thickness and carotid total plaque area (TPA). Endpoints were neuropsychological test result

Online Illicit Drug Distribution in the Thai Language on X: Exploratory Qualitative Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND: By increasing exposure to drug-related advertisements, the illicit digital drug trade promotes drug normalization and eases access to substances, increasing the likelihood of initiation. Social media platforms play an increasingly important role in facilitating the online substance trade by leveraging encrypted communications and user-friendly interfaces to advertise a large variety of readily available substances. Despite its growing importance, there is a paucity of research conducted in Thailand that aims to determine the types of substances, marketing strategies, and public hea

Health Education and Its Role in the Prevention and Management of Non-communicable Diseases: A Review.

Non-communicable diseases have become a major global health concern, largely due to factors that can be influenced by lifestyle choices. Behaviors such as unhealthy eating, physical inactivity, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol consumption contribute significantly to the rise of these conditions. Promoting health education plays an important role in addressing this challenge by supporting better understanding, encouraging healthier behaviors, and facilitating early recognition of symptoms. A systematic search of PubMed and Web of Science was conducted for studies addressing health education i

Longitudinal Association between Problematic Social Media Use and Sleep Problems among Adolescents: A Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model and Sex Differences.

Problematic social media use and sleep problems are common concerns among adolescents, yet little is known about how these two constructs are associated across time. This study aimed to examine the longitudinal associations between problematic social media use and sleep problems among adolescents and to explore possible sex differences in these associations. Participants included 1,696 students (Mage = 14.4, SD = 1.5; 47.5% female), with data collected across three waves at six-month intervals. A random-intercept cross-lagged panel model was used to test the within-person associations between

Mobile phone ownership, social media use, and substance use at ages 11-13 in the ABCD study.

INTRODUCTION: There is ongoing concern about the impact of increasing use of social media and digital devices on unhealthy behaviors such as substance use in youth. Mobile phone and social media use have been associated with substance use in adolescent and young adult samples, but few studies have evaluated these relationships in younger samples. METHODS: This secondary analysis of data drawn from the ABCD Study examined associations between youth-reported mobile phone ownership and social media use at age 11-12 and use of alcohol, nicotine/tobacco, and cannabis over the next 18 months. Digital development and health in China: a serial pathway model through internet use and physical exercise in repeated cross-sectional surveys.

BACKGROUND: Digital exclusion extends beyond access to whether digital participation is associated with health-promoting behavior and health-related outcomes. Physical exercise may form one behavioral link between digital participation and health, but the strength of this sequence may differ across sociodemographic groups. METHODS: We harmonized the 2013, 2018, and 2023 Chinese General Social Survey, including 29,295 adults across 31 provincial-level units. These waves were deliberately selected at approximately 5-year intervals to provide repeated cross-sectional snapshots across a 10-year p

Digital engagement and online health information seeking behaviour among older adults: findings from Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: With advances in information technology and the widespread availability of online health resources, access to digital health information has become increasingly common. In this context, the ability of older adults to effectively access, evaluate, and use online health information has emerged as a critically important competence. Since the internet provides easy and often low-cost access to a wide range of information, older adults are increasingly using the internet for health-related purposes. This study aimed to examine the demographic, economic, and personal factors associated w

Women's Engagement With Different Internet-Enabled Technologies to Access Digital Menopause Information: Mixed Methods, Multiphase Sequential Study.

BACKGROUND: Information on menopause can come from a variety of sources, from friends and family to health care professionals, but increasingly, digital information has become a significant source. Digital information can be accessed online, through websites, social media, podcasts, and online groups or forums. The extent to which digital information on menopause is accessed and consumed can vary widely depending on individual circumstances. Existing literature has focused on investigating a single technology at a time in terms of digital menopause information, rather than exploring a wider ec

Implementing Supported Digital Enhanced Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Binge Eating Disorder in Routine Care: Mixed Methods Service Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Binge eating disorder (BED) is highly prevalent and impairing; yet, the UK national guideline-recommended first-line treatment of guided self-help (ie, supported program-led interventions in which content is delivered by the program with brief support) remains underused in routine National Health Service (NHS) care. Digital delivery offers a scalable approach, but evidence from real-world NHS settings is limited. OBJECTIVE: This real-world evaluation aimed to pilot a supported digital program-led version of enhanced cognitive behavior therapy (CBT-E) in a specialist adult eating d

Key Decision Points for Personalization and Customization in Self-Guided Digital Suicide Prevention: Qualitative Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: Young adults in the United States experience high rates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) but low engagement with traditional care, highlighting the need for accessible and scalable digital interventions. Self-guided digital safety planning interventions (SPIs) can expand access to support but introduce important decisions about what content to deliver, when systems should intervene, and how users retain control over system actions. Personalization, defined as system-initiated adaptation, and customization, defined as user-initiated control, may offer complementary approache

Health Information Literacy as a Determinant of Digital Self-Efficacy.

This brief report examines the association between health information literacy and digital self-efficacy (DSE) in patients with multiple sclerosis or epilepsy (pwMS/E). The focus is specifically on critical and risk-conscious aspects of health information literacy. The study used survey data (N = 287) collected from pwMS/E. The analysis comprises a principal component analysis and a regression analysis. In a model controlling age, gender and subjective anxiousness and/or depression, a high level of health information literacy was associated with higher DSE. The model explained over one-third o
