Design and construction of small sized pencil probe to measure bio-impedance.

Currently, bio-impedance measurements are performed with relatively large probes which are not suitable for all in vivo studies. These are typically designed and constructed for different uses, such as for cervical and oesophagus tissues and are too large for many investigations, including those involving the bladder. Therefore, it was decided to design and construct a small sized pencil probe, using a microscope to solder very small wires to a tiny tip (about 2mm in diameter). In addition, different approaches were used to construct, treat, and perform the safety tests and calibration procedu

Interaction of wrestling shoe and competition surface: effects on coefficient of friction with implications for injury.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a significant difference in the co-efficient of friction (Fc) between old versus new wrestling shoes and mats and to investigate the effect of perspiration. Fc was measured by dragging a weighted shoe over a wrestling mat surface and measuring the vertical and horizontal forces produced. Three different shoe conditions were assessed over two mat types for both wet and dry conditions for a total of 12 conditions. To simulate the wet condition, saline solution was smeared over the surface of the mat. There was a significant effect of sh

Reusable vs single-use flexible cystoscopes in outpatient urology: a real-world micro-costing and user evaluation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Flexible cystoscopy is integral to outpatient urology, particularly for surveillance of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Real-world economic data comparing reusable (RU) and single-use (SU) cystoscopes in German outpatient practice are scarce. We evaluated procedure-level costs and multidisciplinary user perceptions under routine conditions. METHODS: A micro-costing analysis was performed in a German outpatient urology centre (337 cystoscopies/year). Capital investment (5-year amortisation), maintenance, reprocessing, consumables, and labour were included. Baselin

Comparison of Physician Perception Between Single-Use Versus Reusable Flexible Bronchoscope for Basic and Advanced Bronchoscopic Procedures Using Low Fidelity Simulation.

BACKGROUND: Single-use flexible bronchoscopes (SUFB) offer potential advantages over reusable flexible bronchoscopes (RFB), including cost-effectiveness, reduced infection risk, and improved accessibility. Although widely used for basic procedures in ICU settings, their performance in advanced procedures remains understudied. METHODS: A single-center pilot study was completed to compare the user experience of VathinH-SteriScope SUFB and Olympus BF-1TH190 RFB among general and interventional pulmonologists using low-fidelity simulation with a mannequin. Participants evaluated scope performance

Novel endoscope system with plasma flushing for off-pump cardiac surgery.

The purpose of this study is to develop a new endoscope for performing simple surgical tasks inside a cardiac atrium/chamber filled with blood, i.e., for performing "off-pump" cardiac surgeries. In general, it is very difficult to observe the inner wall of the vessels containing circulating blood because the light from the endoscope is scattered by the red blood cells. "Plasma flushing" performed using the separator system is developed to observe the inner side of the heart filled with blood and to remove blood cells from the front of the endoscope tip. The system was used in in vitro quantita

Equivalent Circuit Models of the Piezoelectric Transducers for Medical Ultrasound Applications.

Equivalent circuit models are crucial for estimating the performance of piezoelectric transducers. Certain techniques, such as electrical impedance matching between the transmitter and piezoelectric transducers, help optimize the performance of ultrasound systems. In addition, a straightforward model analysis is important for fabricating high-performance piezoelectric transducers. In this study, the presented Mason, Krimholtz-Leedom-Matthaei (KLM), and Butterworth-van Dyke (BVD) models and other modified equivalent circuit models used in piezoelectric transducers were analyzed with specific co

Cable Organizer for Laparoscopic and Endoscopic Procedures.

BACKGROUND: During laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures, multiple devices are used simultaneously, requiring preconnection and arrangement of their cables. Traditionally, cables are bundled with gauze and fixed with drape clips, which hinders intraoperative adjustment of cable number and orientation. Thus, an innovative device for more flexible and convenient equipment line management is needed. Commercial cable-management products lack adjustability during surgery; a rotatable, angle-lockable organizer could fulfill this need. METHODS: We designed a novel surgical cable organizer and produ

Soft pneumatic actuators for wearable systems: a structural classification and integration-oriented evaluation.

Soft pneumatic actuators promise gentle, body-safe assistance, yet many fail at the moment of integration: inflation alters geometry, increases profile, and stresses seams and ports. This topical review reframes actuator selection through a structure-first lens that links how an actuator is built to how it deforms and how it embeds in garments. Actuators are classified by structural architecture, deformation behavior, and fabrication method, and evaluated against four integration criteria central to wearable systems: geometric compatibility, fabrication scalability, system integration readines

Acoustics-catalyzed e-tongues for high-performance detection and identification of sweat metabolites.

The capability for high-precision detection and identification of sweat metabolites is of great importance for personalized healthcare, disease monitoring, and early management of health risks. In this study, we develop an acoustics-catalyzed e-tongue (ACET), which compactly integrates an ultrasonic actuation unit with a biosensor unit based on the oxygen reduction reaction mechanism, enabling substantially enhanced sweat metabolite detection and identification compared with the standalone biosensor unit. Owing to the synergistic effects of ultrasonic excitation and the accompanying acoustoflu

Organic polymer-based monoliths: structural design and integration into microreactors and flow analytical systems.

Approximately three decades ago, in response to the growing demand for rapid and sensitive analysis of small-volume samples, monolithic column technology emerged contemporaneously with other key concepts in analytical chemistry, such as the micro-total analysis system (µTAS) and lab-on-a-chip technology. These innovations attracted considerable attention as paradigm-shifting tools in the field. In the post-genomic era in particular, where miniaturization and high-throughput workflows became critical, monoliths-characterized by their continuous porous structure, high permeability, and low back

Construction and characterization of an arterial input function measurement system for dynamic PET.

BACKGROUND: Dynamic positron emission tomography is an under utilized clinical technique. It requires knowledge of the time-course activity concentration in the patient's arterial blood, called arterial input function (AIF), normally acquired via arterial blood sampling. Alternative methods to acquire the AIF do exist, but each has its own limitations. This study presents a non-invasive radiation detector, called Radian-PET, designed to measure the AIF non-invasively. METHODS: 10 cm long scintillating fibers arranged in two bands of 32 fibers were read out by a 64-channel silicon photomultipl

Metasurface integrated optics for fluorescence imaging endoscopy.

Metasurfaces are shown to offer off-axis optical aberration correction for reflectance imaging in confocal scanning fibre endoscopy. However, in fluorescence imaging, chromatic aberration is a crucial factor that limits image quality. Typically, color correction is achieved by implementing multiple refractive lenses that complicate lens assembly and alignment. In this work, we report the effectiveness of a single metasurface with a gradient refractive index (GRIN) lens for confocal fluorescence imaging, showing significant improvement in image quality. We will show that it is not necessary to

Metamaterial-enhanced MIMO antenna array system for non-invasive cerebral hemorrhage assessment in elderly and disabled patients.

Microwave imaging (MWI) presents a promising, safer, more affordable, and portable alternative for detecting strokes compared to traditional methods, such as CT and MRI, which have limitations related to radiation exposure, cost, and accessibility. This paper focuses on the design and performance evaluation of a compact, T-shaped, two-port Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenna, developed explicitly for microwave-based brain imaging. MWI operates by exploiting differences in tissue dielectric properties to identify and visualize abnormalities, with ultra-wideband (UWB) antennas configur

Analysis of the effect of path cross slope on manual wheelchair propulsion.

PURPOSE: Asymmetrical arm use is needed to propel a manual wheelchair on a straight trajectory when the path has cross slope. Beyond being tiring and inefficient, little is known about the implications of cross slope. METHOD: Simple mechanics is used to analyse the forces acting on the front casters of a wheelchair on a compound slope. This is used to determine how varying cross slope affects the user's propulsion. RESULTS: Analysis shows that the effect of cross slope on compound slopes is relatively small, slightly decreasing the equivalent running slope that can be achieved for the same u

Physics-Informed Design and Bench/Phantom Validation of a Shaft-Compatible 13.56 MHz NFC System for Laparoscopic Colorectal Tumour Localisation.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Accurate intraoperative tumour localisation remains challenging in minimally invasive colorectal surgery because tactile palpation is lost and conventional markers can migrate or provide imprecise localisation. Building on a preceding tri-frequency study that identified 13.56 MHz as the preferred RFID band for the intended application, this work develops a shaft-compatible NFC antenna-reader platform and evaluates its electromagnetic behaviour from bench-top reference media to five-layer tissue-equivalent phantoms. METHODS: A Ø3 × 25 mm Fair-Rite Material 67 ferrite-rod

Robotic System With Stewart Platform and RCM Mechanism for Enhanced Precision and Safety in Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation.

Robotic technology has emerged as a promising solution for non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS), which demands precise and repetitive stimulator movements. Conventional NIBS robots predominantly employ commercial robot arms with serial-link configurations, exhibiting precision and safety constraints. These arms have high end-effector inertia, making them suboptimal for compensating against unintended patient movements, such as respiration. Furthermore, the serial-link structure has a restricted workspace to access the hemispherical head geometry, posing potential collision risks between the r
