BACKGROUND: There is inadequate knowledge on the involvement of oncogenic mechanisms linked to the cyclin (CCND1) gene in lip squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC).
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyse the implication of cyclin D1 in the malignant transformation of lip lesions.
METHODS: We immunohistochemically studied 45 actinic cheilitis cases (15 mild dysplasia, 15 moderate dysplasia, 15 severe dysplasia/carcinoma in situ), 30 LSCC cases with adjacent non-tumour epithelium and 15 normal oral epithelium samples for detection of cyclin D1, β-catenin and Ki-67.

BACKGROUND: In men, reconstruction of large full-thickness defects of the upper lip requires both an inner layer to replace the mucosal lining and an outer hair-bearing layer.
METHODS: When locating the superficial temporal vessels, the design of the temporal flap is marked following the hairline needed. After meticulously dissecting the flap, it is inset and microanastomosed with the facial blood vessels. The internal mucosal layer of the flap is grafted on. During the follow-up period, the sensory recovery and motor functions are examined and recorded.

We report two female infants with congenital midline supraumbilical raphes who subsequently developed haemangiomas on the lower lip and gingiva within the first 2 months of life. One was found to have a subglottic haemangioma during laryngoscopy. This case report describes a metastatic bronchogenic deposit involving the lower lip and the adjacent bone in the lower incisor region. The presenting symptoms were very similar to those of a dentoalveolar infection and extraction of the lower incisor teeth failed to provide any relief. Comparison of radiographs taken 6 months earlier suggested that the metastatic deposit very probably spread from the lower labial sulcus into a site of periapical infection, involving the lower incisors and the adjacent bone.

We report on a rare type of leucoplakia of the lip and the prepuce showing the morphological features of epidermolytic hyperkeratosis. The development of squamous cell carcinoma in one of the patients strongly suggests that epidermolytic leucoplakia may represent a precancerous disorder of the transitional epidermis.

Bayesian spatial models for disease mapping, such as Besag-York-Mollié (BYM) models, are widely used to model disease counts while accounting for spatial dependence. However, these models are not equipped to handle missing covariate values. Covariates are often partially observed, yet these models require separate imputation that ignores imputation uncertainty. We extend this Bayesian framework for disease mapping to accommodate missing covariates while modeling the disease counts. BACKGROUND: Oral commissure and buccal complex defects are commonly seen after cancer ablation. Free flap reconstruction can offer adequate soft tissue volume and outer skin lining. BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess the use of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) in clinically lymph node-negative (cN0) squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lip deemed high risk for occult nodal metastasis.
METHODS: Twenty-six patients with cT1 to T2 cN0 with SCC of the lip underwent SLNB at a tertiary referral center between January 2001 and March 2012. Initial staging methods were clinical examination only (65.4%), ultrasound (23.1%), or CT (11.5%). Operations were performed with the patients under local anesthesia with sedation (50%) or general anesthesia (50%).

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a low-grade, malignant, spindle cell tumour with an infiltrative growth pattern and a high local recurrence rate. Cases of oral DFSP are rare. This report describes a case of DFSP occurring in the labial mucosa. A 21-year-old Japanese man was referred with a recurrent mass on the labial mucosa.
