In this study we discuss a rare case; hydatid cyst disease that is located in the retroperitoneum. Two cases were treated in our department with hydatid cyst disease located in the retroperitoneum; one of the cysts was in the minor pelvis and the other was on the left psoas muscle. Diagnosis was confirmed with blood tests, and radiological examinations. The cyst wall was excised partially and was oversewn. Following the operation both of the patients were given albendasole tablets for 10 weeks with blood count and liver enzyme monitorization. Hydatic cysts located in retroperitoneum were treat

INTRODUCTION: Retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy (RPLND) is indicated in patients with testicular cancer of all stages for staging, prognostic, and therapeutic purposes. Modification of the classic RPLND to incorporate nerve sparing has reduced the morbidity associated with this procedure with respect to ejaculation and fertility.
TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Performance of nerve-sparing RPLND requires an understanding of the anatomy of the sympathetic chains, their branches, and their relationship to the major structures of the retroperitoneum. The key element of this procedure is the prospective

This is the report of a case of fetus-in-fetu diagnosed in a 3-month-old boy and found to be located in the upper retroperitoneum. The entity was distinguished from teratoma by the presence of vertebral axis with limb buds. It corresponded to a diamniotic, monochorionic, monozygotic twin. Complete excision of the mass was performed. Radiological, histopathologic, and DNA fingerprinting studies performed on fetus-in-fetu specimen showed that the fetus was a monozygotic twin.

INTRODUCTION: In the United States and Europe, the retroperitoneoscopic approach to renal surgery has generally been less popular than the transperitoneal laparoscopic approach, primarily because of its "smaller" working space and surgeons' relative unfamiliarity with the optimal operative technique. Presented herein are our current techniques, developed in more than 400 retroperitoneoscopic renal procedures at two major centers performing urologic laparoscopic surgery.
TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Creation of an adequate working space in the retroperitoneum outside of, and posterior to, Gerota'

In a patient on oral anticogulation with sudden onset of loin pain, the possibility of spontaneous bleeding in the retroperitoneum must be considered in the differential diagnosis of renal colic. This rare pathology can be life-threatening, and rapid diagnosis with ultrasound and computerized tomography of the abdomen must be made. If the patient is hemodynamically stable, a conservative approach is justified. Otherwise, emergency nephrectomy may be needed. As patients become older and indications for anticoagulant therapy become more common, we will probably have to face more of these rare bl

Laparoscopic retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND) is a technically advanced procedure that has been undertaken for the management of low-stage nonseminomatous germ cell testis tumor. Although it has been shown to be an effective staging technique, its role as a therapeutic operation is currently unknown. Laparoscopic RPLND requires longer operative times but offers the patient all the advantages of minimally invasive surgery, such as less postoperative pain and shorter hospitalization and convalescence. The role of laparoscopic RPLND for the evaluation of residual abdominal masses fol

Presentation of the first exclusively retroperitoneal laparoscopic nephrectomy performed on a female patient diagnosed with chronic pyelonephritis in the right kidney who referred frequent discomfort in the ipsilateral lumbar fossa as well as sporadic urinary infections. The entire procedure was performed without entering the peritoneal cavity, creating a space in the retroperitoneum, using for that hydrostatic dilation following Gaur's recommendations and introducing in that space a total of 4 trocars. Surgery lasted 3 hours an 35 minutes, with a post-operative stay of 3 days; the anaesthetic

The authors describe a new technique of laparoscopic nephrectomy; the retroextraperitoneal approach has been successfully performed in 4 patients with the following indications: 2 non functioning hydronephrotic kidneys, 2 atrophic chronic pyelonephritic kidneys. The patient was put in a proneoblique position after the retrograde placement of a ureteral catheter up to the renal pelvis, through which the contrast medium was injected. The Veress needle is inserted under fluoroscopic guidance into the perirenal fatty space which was insufflated with CO2. One 12 mm and three 10 mm Trocars were inse

While hydrocele is among the commonest inguinal anomalies in children, less than 20 cases have been reported of its extreme form, the abdominoscrotal hydrocele (ASH). This anomaly consists of a large inguinoscrotal hydrocele which communicates in an hour-glass fashion with a large "intra-abdominal" component. The latter lies deep to the narrow internal inguinal ring, but superficial to the peritoneal cavity proper, which is displaced superiorly and medially. The abdominal component of the ASH thus lies latero- and retroperitoneally, sometimes reaching the lower pole of the kidney. We report fi

Transposition of the inferior vena cava, duplication of the inferior vena cava, circumaortic renal collar, and retroaortic renal vein constitute the four most common major venous anomalies occurring in the retroperitoneum. Recent clinical cases are presented to review the embryogenesis, incidence, and clinical importance of these anomalies and to alert the unfamiliar surgeon to their possible existence. A high index of suspicion on the part of the surgeon is required to prevent inadvertent injury to these anomalous veins and to avoid significant hemorrhage during retroperitoneal surgery.
