Catching a (sine) wave: Temporal dynamics of nonverbal synchrony in social anxiety disorder.

Individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) experience a range of interpersonal problems and studies have found that nonverbal synchrony (the coordination between interaction partners' movements) may be impaired in dyads in which one individual has SAD (Asher et al., 2020). In the present study, we examined the temporal dynamics of nonverbal synchrony during "getting aquatinted" conversations of individuals with and without SAD. Specifically, participants (n = 146) formed either SAD dyads (dyads in which one individual had SAD and the other did not; n = 37 dyads), or control dyads (dyads in

Survival of patients with severe mental disorders: Influence of social functioning.

BACKGROUND: Patients with severe mental disorders have a high risk of premature death due to the interaction of various factors. Social functioning is a strategic functional factor in understanding the course of psychotic disorders. AIM: Analyze the relationship between social functioning and its various dimensions and survival during a 10-year follow-up. METHOD: The Social Functioning Scale (SFS) was administered to 163 close relatives of patients under treatment at a Community Mental Health Unit. Survival was described by Kaplan-Meier analysis and any differences in survival by level of so

Pathways to connection: Mapping the impact of social connection interventions on depression outcomes - an umbrella review.

INTRODUCTION: Social connection (SC) encompasses multiple dimensions, including structural and functional aspects of social relationships. While substantial evidence highlights the relationship between different SC metrics and depression, the effectiveness of interventions aimed at enhancing SC to alleviate depressive symptoms remains inadequately understood. OBJECTIVES: This umbrella review combines evidence from systematic reviews to evaluate the effectiveness of SC interventions in alleviating depression. It specifically examines interventions that strengthen natural social networks, while

An integrative perspective on the role of touch in the development of intersubjectivity.

Touch concerns a fundamental component of sociality. In this review, we examine the hypothesis that somatomotor development constitutes a crucial psychophysiological element in the ontogeny of intersubjectivity. An interdisciplinary perspective is provided on how the communication channel of touch contributes to the sense of self and extends to the social self. During gestation, the transformation of random movements into organized sequences of actions with sensory consequences parallels the development of the brain's functional architecture. Brain subsystems shaped by the coordinated activity

Differential effects of allopregnanolone and diazepam on social behavior through modulation of neural oscillation dynamics in basolateral amygdala and medial prefrontal cortex.

Effective treatments for major depressive disorder (MDD) have long been needed. One hypothesis for the mechanism of depression involves a decrease in neuroactive steroids such as allopregnanolone, an endogenous positive allosteric modulator of the γ-aminobutyric acid-gated chloride channel (GABAA) receptor. In our previous study, we discovered that allopregnanolone, not diazepam, exhibited antidepressant-like effects in the social interaction test (SIT) of social defeat stress (SDS) model mice. However, the dynamics of neuronal activity underlying the antidepressant-like effect remain unknown.…

Parametric investigation of social place preference in adolescent mice.

Social interaction promotes survival by helping animals to form stable and supportive groups. Additionally, maladaptive social behavior is a hallmark of disorders such as autism and schizophrenia. In many different animal species, including humans, social interaction can be inherently rewarding. Lately there has been growing interest in studying the neurobiological underpinnings of social interaction and learned social behavior in rodent behavioral models. One common procedure is conditioned place preference (CPP) to measure the rewarding effects of social interaction and social reward learnin…

Enhancing Brain-Computer Interface Performance by Incorporating Brain-to-Brain Coupling.

Human cooperation relies on key features of social interaction in order to reach desirable outcomes. Similarly, human-robot interaction may benefit from integration with human-human interaction factors. In this paper, we aim to investigate brain-to-brain coupling during motor imagery (MI)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) training using eye-contact and hand-touch interaction. Twelve pairs of friends (experimental group) and 10 pairs of strangers (control group) were recruited for MI-based BCI tests concurrent with electroencephalography (EEG) hyperscanning. Event-related desynchronization (…

Social anxiety and the interpretation of positive social events.

We report four independent studies that examined the relationship between social interaction anxiety and the tendency to interpret positive social events in a threat-maintaining manner. Study 1 described the development of a scale that measures negative interpretations of positive social events, the interpretation of positive events scale (IPES). Study 2 cross-validated the structure of the IPES and established that social interaction anxiety explained significant variance in negative interpretations of positive social events beyond negative affect in general. Study 3 demonstrated that negativ…

The effects of spatial relations and motion information in social scene perception.

A body of research shows that the human visual system hosts a network specialized in processing social interactions-i.e., physical/communicative exchanges between people. This network largely overlaps with regions involved in motion perception. Current views propose that, since motion is an intrinsic component of social interaction, it is necessary to trigger social-interaction selectivity. However, the relationship between social-interaction perception and motion perception remains unclear. We took advantage of two existing functional MRI datasets collected in the same participants, to identi…

The context specificity of anxiety responses induced by chronic psychosocial stress in rats: a shift from anxiety to social phobia?

The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether the anxiety-increasing effects of chronic psychosocial stress generalize to non-social (i.e. heterotypic) stressful situations. To investigate this issue, we repeatedly exposed rats to predictable or unpredictable psychosocial stress for 5 or 12 days and examined their anxiety in two markedly different contexts: the elevated plus maze and social interaction tests. Psychosocial stress and the social interaction test were administered under highly similar conditions, i.e. the two situations were homotypic. Psychosocial stress did not affect an…

Social anxiety and negative interpretations of positive social events: What role does intolerance of uncertainty play?

OBJECTIVE: Although previous studies have demonstrated the association between social anxiety symptom severity and the tendency to appraise positive social events negatively among individuals with social anxiety disorder, no study has examined mediators of this relationship. The current study sought to examine whether intolerance of uncertainty and its subfactors mediate the relationship between social interaction anxiety and the tendency to interpret positive social events negatively. METHOD: One hundred and sixty-five individuals with social anxiety disorder completed measures of social int…

Demographic and clinical correlates of autism symptom domains and autism spectrum diagnosis.

Demographic and clinical factors may influence assessment of autism symptoms. This study evaluated these correlates and also examined whether social communication and interaction and restricted/repetitive behavior provided unique prediction of autism spectrum disorder diagnosis. We analyzed data from 7352 siblings included in the Interactive Autism Network registry. Social communication and interaction and restricted/repetitive behavior symptoms were obtained using caregiver-reports on the Social Responsiveness Scale. Demographic and clinical correlates were covariates in regression models pre

A two-sample study on the relationship between polygenic risk score of serotonergic polymorphisms and social phobia: Interpersonal adaptability as a mediator.

BACKGROUNDS: The influence of serotonin function on social phobia has been well-documented, yet the polygenic risk score of serotonergic polymorphisms for social phobia remains unclear. METHODS: We assessed two aspects of social phobia (i.e., social interaction anxiety and social phobia scrutiny fear) and created a polygenic risk score of seven serotonergic polymorphisms in two independent samples. RESULTS: The results from both samples indicated that a greater polygenic risk score, denoting a higher risk of anxiety, was associated with higher levels of social interaction anxiety and social …

The social network of people who attempt suicide.

Social characteristics and self-rating of social support by means of the Interview Schedule for Social Interaction were investigated in 75 inpatients after a suicide attempt. We found that very few suicide attempters (13%) had a well functioning relationship, and two-thirds had problems in their occupational situation. Divorced patients had unsatisfactory social interaction compared with those who were married or cohabiting and with those who were single or widowed. Employees and students more often had deep emotional relations than those who were unemployed or in vocational rehabilitation. Th…

Mentalizing from self and friend perspectives: Relations between inter-brain neural similarity, affective similarity and social anxiety symptoms.

Social interactions are dynamic and complex, relying on tracking variation in your own and your partner's affective and mental states. Being "in-sync" neurally and building a shared consensus can mark successful social interactions. In addition, social anxiety can impact social experiences. We used a novel, naturalistic paradigm to investigate relations between inter-brain neural similarity within mentalizing regions, affective similarity, and social anxiety symptoms. Undergraduate student friend pairs (N = 34, 85% White, 65% Women) engaged in a social interaction while videos captured from th…
