Heart rate distribution in dogs with third degree atrioventricular block and rate responsive pacemakers.

INTRODUCTION: In dogs, single lead ventricular pacing, ventricular sensing, inhibition response, rate adaptive (VVIR) pacemakers are routinely used to treat third degree atrioventricular block. The objectives of this study were to investigate the heart rate distribution in dogs with VVIR pacemakers, and report changes when activity settings were adjusted. ANIMALS: Eighteen client-owned dogs with VVIR pacemakers for third degree atrioventricular block. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This observational study consisted of a review of medical records of dogs with VVIR pacemakers. For dogs with >50% of p

Effect of cilobradine in cats with a first episode of congestive heart failure due to primary cardiomyopathy.

INTRODUCTION: Heart rate (HR) is often elevated in cats with cardiomyopathies (CMPs). Pharmacologic modulation of HR may reduce cardiac morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of cilobradine vs. placebo, regarding time to cardiac mortality or morbidity in cats with first episode of congestive heart failure (CHF) due to primary CMP. ANIMALS: Three hundred and sixty-seven client-owned cats with primary CMP that had presented with a first episode of CHF at 50 centers in Europe. Per-protocol population comprised 193 cats (n = 89 cilobradine, n = 104 placebo). An interim a

Change of Vertebral Left Atrial Size in Dogs With Preclinical Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease Prior to the Onset of Congestive Heart Failure.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: It has been proposed that vertebral left atrial size (VLAS) on thoracic radiographs can be used to assess the left atrial enlargement in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). However, it remains unclear whether VLAS can be used to distinguish dogs between pre-clinical MMVD that are at a greater risk of developing congestive heart failure (CHF) from those at a lower risk. We investigated this possibility. ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-one dogs with MMVD were retrospectively classified into one of two groups, a group that developed CHF (group CHF, n

Toceranib phosphate resolves right heart obstruction secondary to a heart base neoplasm in a dog.

An eight-year-old castrated male, 45 kg labrador retriever presented for evaluation of a two-week history of cough and tachypnoea. Echocardiography revealed an approximately 10 cm heart base mass, which extended to the right atrioventricular junction, causing compression of both the right atrium and ventricle resulting in right-sided congestive heart failure (abdominal effusion). Cytology of the mass was consistent with a neuroendocrine carcinoma. Given the location and description, a chemodectoma or ectopic thyroid carcinoma was suspected. The patient was treated with toceranib phosphate and

Comparison of different radiographic scores with associated echocardiographic measurements and prediction of heart enlargement in dogs with and without myxomatous mitral valve disease.

INTRODUCTION: Staging of myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) requires an echocardiographic examination along with thoracic radiographs. The aims of this study were to calculate mean values for radiographic scores vertebral heart size (VHS), left atrial width (LAWidth), radiographic left atrial dimension (RLAD), and vertebral left atrial size (VLAS) in conventional and grayscale inverted images in healthy dogs and dogs with different stages of MMVD, and to find cutoff values for a stage assignment. ANIMALS: One hundred fifty dogs in different stages of MMVD and 50 unaffected dogs were evalu

Prognostic relevance of left cardiac enlargement in dogs with preclinical myxomatous mitral valve disease.

INTRODUCTION: According to the most recent consensus guidelines on canine myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD), dogs with only left atrial enlargement (LAE) or left ventricular enlargement are classified as stage B1. The concomitant presence of LAE and left ventricular enlargement is needed to be classified as stage B2. The primary aim of the study was to evaluate the prognosis in stage B1 and stage B2 according to the revised definition. The secondary aim was to assess the prognostic relevance of LAE in stage B1. ANIMALS: A total of 440 dogs with MMVD, 276 in stage B1 and 164 in stage B2.

Transvenous correction of patent ductus arteriosus in two toy-breed dogs with the Amplatzer™ Vascular Plug 4.

Two Pomeranian dogs referred for interventional correction of a left-to-right shunting patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) had inadequate femoral arterial access for any occlusion device other than micro coils. The decision was made to attempt correction of the PDA using the Amplatzer™ Vascular Plug 4 (AVP4) from a femoral venous approach. An AVP4 was successfully deployed in each dog with complete occlusion noted within 5 min. Complete occlusion was persistent at 24 h after the procedure, while both dogs were subclinical, had no residual ductal flow, and complete or near complete reverse cardiac r

Transcatheter closure of aneurysmal perimembranous ventricular septal defect with the canine duct occluder in two dogs.

Congenital membranous ventricular septal aneurysm has been reported in dogs and can be associated with a perimembranous ventricular septal defect (VSD). The windsock-like ventricular septal aneurysm is formed by tissue of the membranous ventricular septum and portions of the septal leaflet of the tricuspid valve. We report two dogs that underwent transcatheter closure of perimembranous VSD associated with membranous ventricular septal aneurysm using a commercial device marketed for transcatheter closure of patent ductus arteriosus, the canine duct occluder. Partial closure was achieved in the

Suspected sequential left atrial ruptures in a dog with myxomatous mitral valve disease.

An 11-year-old mixed breed dog was presented with exercise intolerance and syncope. At admission, transthoracic echocardiography revealed myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) associated with severe left atrial (LA) enlargement and moderate anechoic pericardial effusion with a hyperechoic density suggestive of a thrombus. Rupture of the LA free wall secondary to MMVD was suspected, and medical therapy with furosemide and pimobendan was initiated. After one month, recheck echocardiography showed mild anechoic pericardial effusion and an acquired atrial septal defect with a left-to-right intrac

Echocardiographic and electrocardiographic effects of atenolol versus sotalol in dogs with severe subaortic stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Subaortic stenosis (SAS) is a commonly diagnosed canine congenital cardiac defect, with severe forms of carrying a poor long-term prognosis. To date, an effective treatment strategy has not been developed in veterinary medicine. This study sought to determine if sotalol, a class III antiarrhythmic, may have salient echocardiographic and antiarrhythmic benefits for medical management for dogs affected with severe SAS. METHODS: Ten dogs diagnosed with severe SAS were enrolled in this prospective, double-blinded, crossover study. Dogs underwent physical exam, non-invasive blood press

Long-term palliation of right-sided congestive heart failure after stenting a recurrent cor triatriatum dexter in a 10½-year-old pug.

A 10½-year-old, male neutered, pug presented with increasing ascites over two months. Echocardiography revealed cor triatriatum dexter with no concurrent cardiovascular anomalies, subsequently confirmed by computed tomography angiography. Balloon dilation of the perforated intra-atrial membrane under fluoroscopic guidance resulted in the transient resolution of all clinical abnormalities, but six months later stenosis and ascites recurred. After repeated balloon dilation, a stent was placed across the membrane. The dog remains asymptomatic fourteen months after the second procedure. One notewo

Cor triatriatum dexter of unusual morphology in a miniature schnauzer.

A five-year-nine-month-old, male entire, miniature schnauzer presented for further investigation of pleural effusion. Echocardiography revealed a perforated membrane dividing the right atrium into two chambers: the true right atrium (a small, lower-pressure, cranioventral chamber communicating with the tricuspid valve and right ventricle) and the accessory right atrium (a larger, higher-pressure, caudodorsal chamber), consistent with a cor triatriatum dexter. This was confirmed using computed tomography angiography. Imaging studies revealed that both the cranial and caudal vena cava entered th

Partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection with portosystemic shunt in a cat.

A nine-month-old castrated male domestic shorthair presented for evaluation with a three-month history of hematuria. Portosystemic shunts and calculi within the bladder were suspected, and computed tomography angiography was performed. Computed tomography angiography identified an extrahepatic portosystemic shunt and a partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection, with the lobar vein of the right caudal lobe draining into the caudal vena cava. After anesthesia was administered to the cat, tachypnea and wheezing respiratory sounds were observed, and thoracic radiography revealed the right midd

Three-dimensional activation maps of sinus rhythm and focal atrial tachycardia in a dog.

A five-year-old, female-spayed boxer was referred for frequent and medically refractory paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia. Diagnostic evaluation found no underlying structural heart or systemic diseases. Three-dimensional electroanatomical mapping and radiofrequency ablation were pursued. Activation mapping of normal sinus rhythm demonstrated the location of the sinus node in the posterolateral region of the right atrium. Activation mapping of the tachyarrhythmia identified a centrifugal activation pattern originating from the right atrium at the posterolateral aspect of the tricuspid va
