Bone suppression on pediatric chest radiographs via a deep learning-based cascade model.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Bone suppression images (BSIs) of chest radiographs (CXRs) have been proven to improve diagnosis of pulmonary diseases. To acquire BSIs, dual-energy subtraction (DES) or a deep-learning-based model trained with DES-based BSIs have been used. However, neither technique could be applied to pediatric patients owing to the harmful effects of DES. In this study, we developed a novel method for bone suppression in pediatric CXRs. METHODS: First, a model using digitally reconstructed radiographs (DRRs) of adults, which were used to generate pseudo-CXRs from computed tomogra

Suppression-subtractive hybridization as a strategy to identify taxon-specific sequences within the Mycoplasma mycoides Cluster: design and validation of an M. capricolum subsp. capricolum-specific PCR assay.

The phylogenetically related Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capricolum and M. mycoides subsp. mycoides biotype Large Colony are two small-ruminant pathogens involved in contagious agalactia. Their respective contributions to clinical outbreaks are not well documented, because they are difficult to differentiate with the current diagnostic techniques. In order to identify DNA sequences specific to one taxon or the other, a suppression-subtractive hybridization approach was developed. DNA fragments resulting from the reciprocal subtraction of the type strains were used as probes on a panel of M. c

Heart motion adapted cine phase-contrast flow measurements through the aortic valve.

A method for magnetic resonance cine velocity mapping through heart valves with adaptation of both slice offset and angulation according to the motion of the valvular plane of the heart is presented. By means of a subtractive labeling technique, basal myocardial markers are obtained and automatically extracted for quantification of heart motion at the valvular level. The captured excursion of the basal plane is used to calculate the slice offset and angulation of each required time frame for cine velocity mapping. Through-plane velocity offsets are corrected by subtracting velocities introduce

Successful treatment of pulsatile tinnitus caused by jugular bulb diverticula using stent-assisted volumetric coil embolization in a double-jailing technique.

BACKGROUND: Pulsatile tinnitus (PT) is a distressing auditory symptom, frequently caused by vascular anomalies near the temporal bone. Among the rarer venous causes are jugular bulb diverticula, which can be difficult to diagnose and manage. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a patient in their 40s with persistent right-sided pulsatile tinnitus significantly impairing daily functioning. Imaging revealed two diverticula in the right jugular bulb and an enlarged nuchal emissary vein. Conservative treatment was ineffective. Digital subtraction angiography confirmed the venous origin of the

[Angiography with magnetic resonance of the ++carotid arteries. Evaluation of clinical results obtained with low magnetic field equipment].

Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) is the latest diagnostic technique for the noninvasive evaluation of cardiovascular conditions. This technique has proved to be especially useful in the study of carotid arteries. All the clinical studies reported to date have been obtained at high or medium field strength; our purpose is to assess the clinical value of MRA in the evaluation of carotid arteries at low field strength. All the exams were performed with an 0.2 T permanent magnet, using the 2D time of flight (TOF) technique, the only one which is currently available on our equipment. Forty-two

High-Fidelity Simulation for Skull Base Surgery Enabled by Virtual Dura Mater Construction.

OBJECTIVE: Advances in imaging and artificial intelligence have enabled high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) constructions for neurosurgical simulation. However, accurate reproduction of the dura mater-particularly the tentorium, a thin yet critical structure in skull base surgery-remains challenging, limiting the fidelity of preoperative simulations. We describe a novel method for constructing the dura mater in 3D surgical simulation and demonstrate its utility in planning skull base tumor surgery. METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging and contrast-enhanced computed tomography were imported

Stimulus-induced rotary saturation imaging of visually evoked response: A pilot study.

Spin-lock (SL) pulses have been proposed to directly detect neuronal activity otherwise inaccessible through standard functional magnetic resonance imaging. However, the practical limits of this technique remain unexplored. Key challenges in SL-based detection include ultra-weak signal variations, sensitivity to magnetic field inhomogeneities, and potential contamination from blood oxygen level-dependent effects, all of which hinder the reliable isolation of neuronal signals. This pilot study evaluates the performance of the stimulus-induced rotary saturation (SIRS) technique to map visual sti

Development of End-to-End Artificial Intelligence Models for Surgical Planning in Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion.

Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) is a commonly used technique for treating lumbar degenerative diseases. In this study, we developed a fully computer-supported pipeline to predict both the cage height and the degree of lumbar lordosis subtraction from the pelvic incidence (PI-LL) after TLIF surgery, utilizing preoperative X-ray images. The automated pipeline comprised two primary stages. First, the pretrained BiLuNet deep learning model was employed to extract essential features from X-ray images. Subsequently, five machine learning algorithms were trained using a five-fold cross-

Anterior column realignment from a lateral approach for the treatment of severe sagittal imbalance: a retrospective radiographic study.

INTRODUCTION: Adult deformity combined with sagittal malalignment is a pathology that decreases patient's quality of life and that requires surgical correction to achieve clinical improvement. Spine osteotomies are usually performed to restore alignment of the spine, even if these techniques are associated with high intraoperative risks, revision rates and relevant mortality rates. Anterior column realignment (ACR) is a new technique that allows large corrections through a minimally invasive lateral approach to the spine after release of the anterior longitudinal ligament. [Usefulness of arteriography with multislice spiral computed tomography in the diagnosis of preocclusive stenosis of the cervical internal carotid artery].

INTRODUCTION: Distinction between near-occlusion and occlusion of the internal carotid artery (ICA) is relevant because patients can benefit from a surgical treatment in the first case. Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is the best neuroimaging technique for its diagnosis but the possibility of related neurologic complications suggests the use of non-invasive tests. Ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) have been proposed as alternative techniques of diagnosis. But these can provoke an erroneous diagnosis when a near occlusion of ICA is present. Multislice helicoidal com

A reverse vaccinomics approach for the designing of novel immunogenic multi-epitope vaccine construct against gas gangrene and related colorectal cancer for Clostridium septicum DSM 7534.

PURPOSE: Costridium septicum, the causative agent of clostridial myonecrosis or gas gangrene, has been linked with colorectal malignancies, particularly tumors of the ascending colon. Due to the pathogen's resistance and the limited understanding of its genomic structure, effective therapeutic strategies are needed. This study focuses on developing a vaccine to address this issue. METHOD: In this study, we employed both subtractive proteomics and reverse vaccinology to identify potential therapeutics against C. septicum. Through subtractive proteomics, we pinpointed antigenic membrane protein

Noninvasive assessment of the circle of Willis in cerebral ischemia: the potential of CT angiography and contrast-enhanced transcranial color-coded duplexsonography.

Thirty-four patients with acute hemispheric ischemic strokes underwent both CT angiography and contrast-enhanced transcranial color-coded duplexsonography (TCCD) to study the effectiveness of the combined noninvasive techniques for evaluation of the circle of Willis. In 3/34 patients, CT angiography and contrast-enhanced TCCD demonstrated middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion, in 5 others MCA stenosis. A severe posterior cerebral artery stenosis was missed by CT angiography. In 8 patients, contrast-enhanced TCCD failed because of poor bone windows. In these patients, CT angiography was normal

[Digital videoradiography applied to the study of the recto-anal region during defecography].

The authors have employed a real-time fluoroscopic computerized equipment during defecography. Digitalized images were acquired at a rate of three frames/s and then processed and became immediately available. Digital defecography was employed in 67 patients with various anorectal diseases--i.e., rectocele, descending perineum, rectal prolapse, non-relaxing puborectalis syndrome and fecal incontinence. We found time-interval difference (TID) technique especially useful for it allowed different functional phases of defecation to be depicted on a single subtracted image and an evaluation of the m

Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension in Children: A Multi-Institutional Review of Spinal CSF Leaks Localized on Advanced Myelography.

Spontaneous intracranial hypotension is an increasingly recognized syndrome caused by a spinal CSF leak, with most reported cases occurring in adults. The use of specialized or advanced myelography to localize spinal CSF leaks has evolved substantially in recent years, particularly since the initial description of CSF-venous fistulas in 2014. To our knowledge, no prior series have evaluated the use of specialized myelographic techniques to localize CSF leaks in children with spontaneous intracranial hypotension, likely because the disease is rare in this patient population. This issue may be c
