Third generation Dual Mobility Cups: could be the future in total hip arthroplasty? A five-year experience with dualis.

BACKGROUND: The concept of dual mobility (DM) is currently approved as a valid option for reducing the risk of dislocation, with an incidence ranging from 0% to 4.6%. The principle is to achieve a high joint stability through a large diameter polyethylene (PE) liner, and to reduce cutting forces due to a "low-friction" head-liner coupling mechanism. METHODS: From March 2015 to March 2020, 138 patients were treated with Dualis Cup (Gruppo Bioimpianti-Peschiera Borromeo, MI, Italy) for a total of 141 implants (three cases were bilateral). The average age at the time of the surgery was 77. Patie

Posterior tibial tendon dislocation: a systematic review of the literature and presentation of a case.

OBJECTIVE: In contrast to posterior tibial tendon lesions, dislocations of the posterior tibial tendon are thought to be 'extremely rare'. Diagnostic criteria for this condition have not yet been established. METHODS: A systematic literature review revealed 61 published cases with posterior tibial tendon dislocation in 36 reports, including eight (12 patients) in French and five (7 patients) in German. We add one more case, which was complicated by a longitudinal tibial tendon tear and a lateral talar dome osteochondral lesion. Fifty-nine cases were descriptively analysed regarding initial in

Atypical pulmonary embolism of port catheter fragments in oncology patients.

GOALS OF WORK: Embolization of venous catheter fragments to the pulmonary vasculature is a very rare form of pulmonary embolism which is only sporadically reported in the literature. The incidence and clinical picture of this complication are unknown. PATIENT AND METHODS: In this retrospective analysis between 1999 and 2004, in our clinic, 1,014 port catheters were implanted. In this 5-year period, the patients' files were screened for the incidence of pulmonary embolism of catheter fragments and the accompanying complication rate. MAIN RESULTS: In 11 patients, port catheter dislodgment and

[Reduction and positioning of cervical spine injuries].

Prerequisites for successful reduction of cervical spine injuries are an exact analysis and classification of every lesion. In locked dislocations disc protrusion should be excluded prior to reduction by MRI or CT-scan. For manual reduction and closed manipulation by the trauma surgeon we use a halo-ring which is applied in local anaesthesia and fluoroscopic control. The anatomic position is maintained by a halo-fixator until surgery. Skeletal traction is used mainly for locked dislocations and late malalignements. Traction is provided by a halo-ring and weights up to 20 kg. Repeated clinical

Femoral deficiency reconstruction using a hydroxyapatite-coated locked modular stem. A series of 43 total hip revisions.

INTRODUCTION: We report a continuous prospective series of patients operated on for total hip prosthesis femoral component loosening involving a bone defect. Reconstruction was performed using a hydroxyapatite-coated locked modular stem. The study's objective was to assess medium term clinical and X-ray results obtained with this original concept. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The patients included received a REEF (DePuy) femoral implant for aseptic loosening or loosening associated with a periprosthetic fracture. Implantation was systematically accompanied by an extended trochanteric osteotomy (ETO

Open Reduction of a Posteriorly Locked Shoulder Dislocation: A Case Example.

Posterior shoulder dislocations are uncommon but pose diagnostic and treatment challenges, particularly when locked due to humeral head impaction or soft tissue interference. These cases often necessitate surgical intervention, especially when locked or associated with recurrent instability or bony injuries. Preoperative assessment is vital to confirm the diagnosis and guide surgical planning. The surgical procedure begins with patient positioning and anesthesia, followed by a chosen approach, such as the deltopectoral route. In this case, exposure involved identifying and tenodesing the bicep

Lisfranc Arthrodesis in Posttraumatic Chronic Injuries.

Chronic injuries at the tarsometatarsal joint represent a wide array of painful malunions ranging from isolated instability to complex three-dimensional deformities with rapid development of posttraumatic arthritis. Deformity correction and arthrodesis of the symptomatic joints leads to significant pain reduction and functional improvement provided that realignment of the anatomic axes is achieved. Arthrodesis should be limited to the first to third tarsometatarsal joints, whereas interposition arthroplasty is preferred for symptomatic arthritis of the fourth to fifth tarsometatarsal joints. F

[Complex injuries of the shoulder - floating shoulder].

Complex injuries of the shoulder are comparatively rare. Within the field of complex shoulder injuries this article particularly deals with the diagnosis and therapy of the "floating shoulder injury" as a review article. This term describes a discontinuation of the osseus and soft tissue suspension of the upper extremity from the axial skeleton. By literature review and involvement of recent biomechanical studies this article will show the injury patterns that lead to instability of the shoulder girdle and the therapeutic to be employed in respective cases. Key words: shoulder, floating should

Arthroscopic fixation of the subscapularis tendon in the reverse Hill-Sachs lesion for traumatic unidirectional posterior dislocation of the shoulder.

Posterior unidirectional instability of the shoulder following trauma is frequently associated with a cartilage-bone defect on the anterior joint surface of the humeral head. This defect can catch on the posterior joint surface during internal rotation of the arm, which causes redislocation of the humeral head in a posterior direction, thus increasing joint destruction. We describe a new arthroscopic surgical technique in which the subscapularis tendon is mobilized and attached to the defect using nonabsorbable or bioabsorbable suture anchors. In an manner analogous to open surgery with arthro

Management of vertebral column fractures in dogs and cats: 211 cases (1977-1985).

Hospital records and radiographs of 211 dogs and cats with vertebral column fractures or luxations evaluated at the University of Tennessee Veterinary Teaching Hospital between April 1977 and September 1985 were reviewed. After neurologic examination, status of the animal was graded on a scale of 1 to 8. Decision to treat each animal either medically or surgically was based on the extent and type of injury, neurologic signs, veterinarian's experience, and owner's wishes. After treatment, neurologic status was evaluated on the aforementioned scale and differences in the outcome of treatment wer

[A case of traumatic obturator luxation of the hip in a 4-year-old child].

The authors report a case of antero-inferior traumatic dislocation of the hip, in a four-year old child. They have reviewed the literature. If the isolated dislocation is rarely unknown, its reducing can set a problem and be impossible due to a capsulo-ligamentous interposition. This imposes the open reducing. In this case, the surgical treatment and a sufficient follow-up allow to affirm the total cure, without aftermaths.
