Prevalence and predictors of underweight and stunting among children under 2 years of age in Eastern Kenya.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate key risk factors associated with undernutrition in the first few years of life. DESIGN: A cross-sectional household survey was conducted in January 2018 collecting anthropometric data and other information on household, caregiver and child characteristics. Crude and adjusted odds ratios were calculated to assess the association of these characteristics with stunting and underweight outcomes. SETTING: Kitui and Machakos counties in south-east Kenya. PARTICIPANTS: Caregivers and their children aged 0-23 months in 967 beneficiary households of the Government of Kenya'

Increased Aqueous Humor GDF15 Is Associated with Worse Visual Field Loss in Pseudoexfoliative Glaucoma Patients.

PURPOSE: To determine whether increased growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) in aqueous humor (AH) is associated with worse visual field loss in patients with pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PXG). METHODS: We recruited 12 patients (6 males, 6 females) with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) or PXG who were scheduled to undergo glaucoma surgery. AH was obtained from the initial peripheral paracentesis for the planned glaucoma surgery, and GDF15 levels were quantified with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay by an investigator masked to clinical information. Humphrey visual field testing was perf

Relationship between Stunting, Wasting, Underweight and Geophagy and Cognitive Function of Children.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between anthropometric characteristics and both geophagy and cognitive function of children. STUDY DESIGN: The study prospectively followed singleton children whose mothers participated in the MiPPAD clinical trial in Allada, Benin, from birth to age 12 months. Anthropometric measurements were taken at birth and 9 and 12 months. Wasting, stunting and underweight were defined as weight-for-length, length-for-age and weight-for-age Z-scores less than -2, respectively. Cognitive and motor functions were assessed using the Mull

Prevalence and Predictors of Growth Impairment and Short Stature in Pediatric-Onset Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Growth impairment is common in children with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). However, the magnitude of short stature at adulthood is not well characterized. We aimed to determine the prevalence and predictors of growth impairment at diagnosis and adulthood in children with IBD. METHODS: Height z-scores at diagnosis of IBD and at adulthood among 291 children with Crohn's disease (CD) and 125 with ulcerative colitis (UC) were retrieved retrospectively and compared to matched controls. Growth impairment at diagnosis was defined as height z-score for age less than or equal

Predicting Posttraumatic Growth among Firefighters: The Role of Deliberate Rumination and Problem-Focused Coping.

Exposure to work-related traumatic incidents in firefighters may result in positive psychological changes which are termed "posttraumatic growth". This study aimed to construct structure equation modeling based on the model of posttraumatic growth in firefighters. Methods: A total of 226 firefighters who had experienced a work-related traumatic incident participated. The participants from three municipal fire departments and seven fire stations completed an anonymous survey asking about extraversion, optimism, calling in the workplace, problem-focused coping, deliberate rumination, and posttra

Validation of the Vertical Facial Growth Screening Test.

Background. Vertical facial growth has a high prevalence. Nonspecialized professionals have shown low sensitivity to identify patients at risk. In the face of this difficulty, we designed and validated a screening checklist for vertical facial growth. Methods. A multidisciplinary team of 5 members developed the Vertical Facial Growth Screening Test. A sample of 160 evaluations was obtained. We consider as the gold standard the evaluation of 2 specialists in dentofacial orthopedics. Results. Consistency measured with Cronbach α was .675 for 10 items. Test-retest reliability was .956. The intero

Long-term growth in children with posterior urethral valves.

BACKGROUND: Posterior urethral valves (PUVs) are one of the leading causes of pediatric chronic kidney disease (CKD). Growth impairment is prevalent in pediatric CKD, and children with PUVs are at high risk for growth retardation. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe growth profiles in PUVs and to identify risk factors for stunting, defined as age-specific height standard deviation score (SDS) below -2. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Medical records of 65 patients with PUVs and a minimum follow-up of two years were retrospectively reviewed. Chronic kidney disease stage 1-3 was consi

Subjective analysis of the application of enhancement filters on magnetic resonance imaging of the temporomandibular joint.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of enhancement filters on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). STUDY DESIGN: In total, 66 MRI scans of the TMJ were analyzed without filtration and with the application of 2 filters: Sharpen 1 and Sharpen 2 (OnDemand software). Two dentomaxillofacial radiologists examined the original and filtered images individually. Intra- and interobserver concordance was measured by using generalized estimating equations. The observers evaluated the subjective image quality and the visibility of 3 components o

A Global-Level Model of the Potential Impacts of Climate Change on Child Stunting via Income and Food Price in 2030.

BACKGROUND: In 2016, 23% of children (155 million) aged [Formula: see text] were stunted. Global-level modeling has consistently found climate change impacts on food production are likely to impair progress on reducing undernutrition. OBJECTIVES: We adopt a new perspective, assessing how climate change may affect child stunting via its impacts on two interacting socioeconomic drivers: incomes of the poorest 20% of populations (due to climate impacts on crop production, health, labor productivity, and disasters) and food prices. METHODS: We developed a statistical model to project moderate an

Understanding the association between stunting and child development in low- and middle-income countries: Next steps for research and intervention.

Stunting, caused by experiences of chronic nutritional deprivation, affects approximately 25% of children under age five globally (i.e., 156 million children). In this review, evidence of a relationship between stunting and child development in low- and middle-income countries is summarized, and issues for further research are discussed. We focus on studies that measured low height-for-age among children less than 5 years old as the exposure and gross/fine motor skills, psychosocial competencies, cognitive abilities, or schooling and learning milestones as the outcomes. This review highlights

A Coronavirus Associated with Runting Stunting Syndrome in Broiler Chickens.

Runting stunting syndrome (RSS) is a disease condition that affects broilers and causes impaired growth and poor feed conversion because of enteritis characterized by pale and distended small intestines with watery contents. The etiology of the disease is multifactorial, and a large variety of viral agents have been implicated. Here we describe the detection and isolation of an infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) -like coronavirus from the intestines of a flock of 60,000 14-day-old brown/red broiler chicks. The birds showed typical clinical signs of RSS including stunting and uneven growth. At n

Keratinizing desquamative squamous metaplasia in the kidney of a patient with complex spinal cord injury.

CONTEXT: Keratinizing desquamative squamous metaplasia (KDSM) of the upper urinary tract was previously thought, but never proven, to represent a premalignant condition. However, no clear guidelines exist regarding the long-term management and follow up once this rare diagnosis has been made. FINDINGS: Patients with spinal cord injury often develop a range of risk factors for malignancy of the urinary tract. We present the first reported case of KDSM in the kidney of a 44-year-old man with spinal cord injury whose complex urological history includes previous augmentation cystoplasty, recurren

A Missense Mutation in PPP1R15B Causes a Syndrome Including Diabetes, Short Stature, and Microcephaly.

Dysregulated endoplasmic reticulum stress and phosphorylation of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2α (eIF2α) are associated with pancreatic β-cell failure and diabetes. Here, we report the first homozygous mutation in the PPP1R15B gene (also known as constitutive repressor of eIF2α phosphorylation [CReP]) encoding the regulatory subunit of an eIF2α-specific phosphatase in two siblings affected by a novel syndrome of diabetes of youth with short stature, intellectual disability, and microcephaly. The R658C mutation in PPP1R15B affects a conserved amino acid within the domain important f

Earliest cranio-encephalic trauma from the Levantine Middle Palaeolithic: 3D reappraisal of the Qafzeh 11 skull, consequences of pediatric brain damage on individual life condition and social care.

The Qafzeh site (Lower Galilee, Israel) has yielded the largest Levantine hominin collection from Middle Palaeolithic layers which were dated to circa 90-100 kyrs BP or to marine isotope stage 5b-c. Within the hominin sample, Qafzeh 11, circa 12-13 yrs old at death, presents a skull lesion previously attributed to a healed trauma. Three dimensional imaging methods allowed us to better explore this lesion which appeared as being a frontal bone depressed fracture, associated with brain damage. Furthermore the endocranial volume, smaller than expected for dental age, supports the hypothesis of a

Two cases of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome with anorectal anomalies and growth retardation.

Clinical features associated with the deletion of 22q11.2 are highly variable. Most are diagnosed by cardinal congenital heart disease or hypoparathyroidism. In cases without major features, an early accurate diagnosis of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome is difficult. Congenital anorectal malformations (ARM), which can be detected soon after birth, have been rarely reported in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. We report two cases of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome with ARM who showed growth retardation. ARM was detected in both patients without congenital heart disease or hypoparathyroidism at early infancy and t

Musculoskeletal manifestations of mucopolysaccharidoses.

The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPSs) are a heterogeneous group of inherited metabolic disorders caused by enzyme deficiencies that lead to progressive lysosomal storage of glycosaminoglycans. Musculoskeletal manifestations are common across all forms of MPS and are often apparent early in the disease course. Diagnostic delays occur frequently in these patients, especially those with more attenuated forms of disease. Treatments for many types of MPS are now available; however, they are most effective if started early before the development of irreversible damage. Some manifestations such as stiffne
