'Postnatal growth during the first five years of life in SGA and AGA neonates with reduced fetal growth'.

BACKGROUND: Even though a lot of research has been done on postnatal growth and the occurrence of catch-up growth in small-for-gestational age (SGA) neonates, this phenomenon has not been studied well in appropriate-for-gestational age (AGA) neonates. Postnatal catch-up growth may also occur in AGA neonates indicating a compensatory mechanism for undiagnosed intrauterine growth restriction, especially in AGA neonates with reduced fetal growth velocity. AIMS: To describe postnatal growth during the first 5 years of life in SGA and AGA neonates and evaluating the role of fetal growth velocity i

Alpha-lipoic acid ameliorates cytarabine-induced developmental anomalies in rat fetus.

Cytarabine (Ara-C) is a nucleoside analogue used in the treatment of cancers and viral infections. It has teratogenic potential and causes a variety of birth defects in fetuses. Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a natural antioxidant offers protection against the developmental toxicity induced by drug- or toxicant-exposure or pathological conditions. This study was aimed at evaluating the protective effect of ALA against Ara-C induced developmental toxicity in rat fetus. Pregnant rats divided into five groups and received normal saline, ALA200 mg/kg, Ara-C12.5 mg/kg, Ara-C25 mg/kg and, Ara-C25 mg/kg

Ultrasonographic findings associated with normal pregnancy and fetal well-being in the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

Reproductive success is vital in sustaining free-ranging and managed bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) populations. Ultrasonography is an invaluable, non-invasive tool in assessing the fetomaternal unit in humans and animals, including dolphins and horses. The purpose of this prospective longitudinal cohort study was to develop a protocol for fetomaternal ultrasonographic monitoring in dolphins and to report normal measurements and descriptive findings correlated with a positive outcome. From 2010 to 2017, serial ultrasonographic evaluations of 12 healthy dolphins were performed over the

Developmental programming: gestational testosterone excess disrupts LH secretion in the female sheep fetus.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal testosterone (T) excess results in reproductive and metabolic perturbations in female sheep that closely recapitulate t … he observations that flutamide co-treatment prevented these changes suggest that programming during fetal development likely occurs via direct androgen actions.

Impact of Maternal Obesity on the Metabolism and Bioavailability of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids during Pregnancy and Breastfeeding.

Abstract: Prenatal and postnatal development are closely related to healthy maternal conditions that allow for the provision of all nutritional requirements to the offspring. In this regard, an appropriate supply of fatty acids (FA), mainly n-3 and n-6 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA), is crucial to ensure a normal development, because they are an integral part of cell membranes and participate in the synthesis of bioactive molecules that regulate multiple signaling pathways. On the other hand, maternal obesity and excessive gestational weight gain affect FA supply to the fetus

High maternal early-pregnancy blood glucose levels are associated with altered fetal growth and increased risk of adverse birth outcomes.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: The study aimed to assess the associations of maternal early-pregnancy blood glucose levels with fetal growth throughout pregnancy and the risks of adverse birth outcomes. METHODS: In a population-based prospective cohort study among 6116 pregnant women, maternal non-fasting glucose levels were measured in blood plasma at a median 13.2 weeks of gestation (95% range 9.6-17.6). We measured fetal growth by ultrasound in each pregnancy period. We obtained information about birth outcomes from medical records and maternal sociodemographic and lifestyle factors from questionnaires.

Hypothyroidism in Pregnancy.

Hypothyroidism in pregnancy is defined as the presence of an elevated thyroid stimulating hormone during gestation, affecting 2% to 3% of the population. Overt hypothyroidism is diagnosed by a decreased FT4, while patients with a normal FT4 are considered to have subclinical disease. Poorly controlled disease is associated with both pregnancy complications and developmental delays in the offspring. Treatment consists of replacement with levothyroxine and regular monitoring. Most pregnant women will require an increase in their dosing from 25% to 30%. While treatment for SCH remains controversi

Deletion of Prl7d1 causes placental defects at mid-pregnancy in mice.

Prolactin family 7, subfamily d, member 1 (Prl7d1), a member of the expanding prolactin family, is mainly expressed in the placental junctional zone (including trophoblast giant cells and spongiotrophoblast cells) with peak expression observed at 12 days postcoitum (dpc) in mice. Previous studies have shown that PRL7D1 is a key mediator of angiogenesis in vitro; however, its physiological roles in placental development in vivo have not been characterized. To address this issue, we deleted Prl7d1 in mice and demonstrated that its absence results in reduced litter size and fertility. Histologica

Customized fetal growth standard compared with the INTERGROWTH-21st century standard at predicting small-for-gestational-age neonates.

INTRODUCTION: The INTERGROWTH-21st project (IG-21) was recently performed aiming to provide a universal benchmark for comparing fetal growth across different ethnicities. Our aim was to compare the IG-21 with a customized standard for predicting pregnancies at risk for neonatal small-for-gestational age (SGA) and adverse outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study including singleton pregnancies presenting for fetal growth assessment between 26 and 36 weeks of gestation. Fetal growth restriction was defined as estimated fetal weight <10th centile for gestational age us

Causes of Congenital Malformations.

BACKGROUND: Many different causes of malformations have been established. The surveillance of a consecutive population of births, including stillbirths and elective terminations of pregnancy because of fetal anomalies, can identify each infant with malformations and determine the frequency of the apparent etiologies. This report is a sequel to the first such analysis in the first 10 years of this Active Malformations Surveillance Program (Nelson and Holmes, ). METHODS: The presence of malformations was determined among 289,365 births over 41 years (1972-2012) at the Brigham and Women's Hospit

Anogenital distance is associated with genital measures and seminal parameters but not anthropometrics in a large cohort of young adult men.

STUDY QUESTION: Is the anogenital distance (AGD) correlated to anthropometric, genital and sperm parameters in young adult men? SUMMARY ANSWER: We observed that reduced AGD is strongly associated with altered semen parameters and reduced testicular volume. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Abnormalities in the foetal development of the testis have been suggested as causative of common male reproductive disorders, such as cryptorchidism, hypospadias, reduced semen quality and testicular germ cell tumour, collectively defined as 'testicular dysgenesis syndrome'. In human epidemiological studies, alterati

Postnatal Growth in a Cohort of Sardinian Intrauterine Growth-Restricted Infants.

Recent studies have shown that infants with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) undergo catch-up growth during infancy. The aim of our study was to evaluate the postnatal growth in a cohort of IUGR infants born in a tertiary-level Obstetric University Hospital of Northern Sardinia. An observational retrospective study was conducted on 12 IUGR (group A) and 12 control infants (group B) by measuring the anthropometric parameters of weight (W), length (L) and head circumference (HC) from birth to the 3rd postnatal year. At birth, significant differences were found between group A and group B w

Quantum dots mediated embryotoxicity via placental damage.

The increasing use of nanoparticles in consumer products raises the concerns of their safety. This study investigated the biological effects of quantum dots (QD) exposure to rats during pregnancy. CdTe QD were injected on the 13th gestation day. Morphological features of 121 fetuses and histological analysis of placentas were performed on the 20th gestation day. The results showed that QD exhibit dose dependent embryotoxicity: survival rates of fetuses were 97% (5mg/kg dose), 86% (10mg/kg dose) and 43% (20mg/kg dose). QD exposure also resulted in the reduction of fetal body length and mass, di

Perinatal programming of renal function.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Perinatal programming of renal function reflects the epigenetic alteration of genetically determined development by environmental factors. These include intrauterine malnutrition, pre and postnatal overnutrition, glucocorticoids, and certain toxins such as smoking. This review aims to summarize the most important findings. RECENT FINDINGS: Human studies may show an increased susceptibility toward the general prevalence of renal failure in already small for gestational age children and adolescents. In particular, glomerular diseases present with a more severe clinical course

Growth curves for twins in Slovenia.

Abnormalities of fetal growth are more common in twins. We introduce the growth curves for monitoring fetal growth in twin pregnancies in Slovenia. Slovenian National Perinatal Information System for the period between 2002 and 2010 was used to calculate birth weight percentiles for all live born twins for each week from 22nd to 40th week. The calculated percentiles of birth weight for all live-born twins in Slovenia served as the basis for drawing 'growth' curves. The calculated growth curves for twins will help accurately diagnose small or large twin fetuses for their gestational age in the
