Transcranial direct current stimulation over right posterior parietal cortex changes prestimulus alpha oscillation in visual short-term memory task.

Alpha band activity changes accompanied with the level attentional state, and recent studies suggest that such oscillation is associated with activities in the posterior parietal cortex. Here we show that artificially elevating parietal activity via positively-charged electric current through the skull can rapidly and effortlessly change people's prestimulus alpha power and improve subsequent performance on a visual short-term memory (VSTM) task. This modulation of alpha power and behavioral performance, however, is dependent on people's natural VSTM capability such that only the low performer

Effect of fluoxetine on neuromuscular function in acetylcholinesterase (AChE) knockout mice.

Congenital myasthenic syndromes (CMS) are a heterogeneous group of diseases caused by genetic defects affecting neuromuscular transmission. The causal mutations have been described in number of cases. The slow channel myasthenic syndrome (slow-channel-CMS) results in a marked prolongation of channel opening in stimulated receptors (nAChR) and the end plate acetylcholinesterase (AChE) deficiency congenital myasthenic syndrome (ColQ-CMS) results in an increased action of acetylcholine (ACh) at the synapse. Anticholinesterase medication is detrimental in these cases. The successful treatment of s

Correlation of Electrical Impedance and Evoked Potentials With Properties of the Electrode Interface Using in Situ Block-Face Imaging of the Rat Pelvic Nerve.

BACKGROUND: Electrical stimulation is an emerging therapy for urologic disorders. The interface between electrode and neural tissue is a critical region of interest given it affects thresholds of neural activation. Measures of electrode impedance are used clinically to estimate tissue fibrosis at the interface; however, the relationship between impedance and fibrosis is not well defined. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the relationship between interface tissue fibrosis and nerve distance from electrode surface with measurements of impedance and evoked thresholds using a chronic model of

[Cardiac contractility modulation: a new option for treating systolic heart failure].

Cardiac contractility modulation (CCM) is a recently developed electrical treatment for enhancing ventricular contractility by non-excitatory impulses applied during the absolute refractory period in advanced systolic heart failure, regardless of the presence of dyssynchrony and QRS prolongation. Implantation of a CCM device is comparable to pacemaker implantation. Three electrodes are placed in the heart via the subclavian vein. One electrode in the right atrium is used for sensing, while ventricular stimulation is done by two electrodes in the right ventricle. The FIX-CHF-4 trial was a rando

Pulsed electrostatic fields (ETG) to reduce hair loss in women undergoing chemotherapy for breast carcinoma: a pilot study.

AIMS: To determine whether specific pulsed electrostatic fields, or electrotrichogenesis (ETG), could potentially prevent or reduce hair loss in patients undergoing adjuvant cyclophosphamide, methotrexate and 5-fluorouracil (CMF) chemotherapy for breast cancer. METHODS: Thirteen women were followed during their adjuvant ETG and chemotherapy treatment to determine the efficacy of ETG. All patients were treated for 12 min, twice weekly with a pulsed electrostatic field. Quantitative hair loss was measured by photographic assessment, and manual hair count. Quality of life assessment was conducte

Effect of a spider toxin (JSTX) on excitatory postsynaptic current at neuromuscular synapse of spiny lobster.

1. We studied the blocking properties of a spider (Nephila clavata) toxin (JSTX) purified from venom on the spiny lobster neuromuscular junction. 2. When a small amount of JSTX was applied to the neuromuscular junction, the excitatory postsynaptic potential (EPSP) was partially suppressed. The amplitude of EPSPs remained at a steady level for several hours during the washing of the preparation, showing that the action of JSTX is irreversible. 3. We recorded the excitatory postsynaptic current (EPSC) from synaptic site using a macro-patch electrode. The amplitude of EPSC increased linearly with

TREATMENT OF CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIAS WITH SYNCHRONIZED ELECTRICAL COUNTERSHOCK.

Synchronized electrical countershock is an intriguing new method for the treatment of ectopic tachycardias. The authors applied this treatment to 20 patients with chronic atrial fibrillation and, in 17 patients, sinus rhythm was restored immediately. An additional four patients with atrial flutter were successfully converted to sinus rhythm. One patient developed a hemiplegia two weeks after cardioversion. No other untoward side effects were observed. In two patients with ventricular fibrillation electrical countershock terminated the arrhythmia. After successful cardioversion of atrial fibril

[Measurement of sinoatrial conduction time].

A prolonged sinoatrial conduction time (SACT) is one of the electrophysiologic characteristics of sick sinus syndrome. Because conduction from the sinus node to the atrium can not be assessed directly, an indirect method for estimating the SACT was developed by Strauss et al.: the premature atrial stimulation technique. The theoretical basis of the method is reviewed and the use of atrial spontaneous premature beats is proposed to estimate the SACT instead of electrical premature atrial stimulation.

Experimental cerebral vasospasm: resolution by iloprost.

A new stable analogue of prostacyclin, iloprost, was tested on the basilar artery of anaesthetized rabbits constricted by electrical stimulation and intracisternal injection of autologous blood. The vasospasm induced by these stimuli was effectively relieved (about 100%) by topical application of iloprost, a stable analogue of prostacyclin (PGI2), and no constriction occurred on further stimulation within one hour. The mechanisms of the action of iloprost and its possible therapeutic value in subarachnoid haemorrhage are discussed.

[Closed-loop spinal neural interface combined with rehabilitation training for incomplete spinal cord injury: a case report].

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a major cause of motor disability. Epidural electrical stimulation (EES) has emerged as a promising neuromodulation technique and has been extensively investigated in recent years for promoting functional recovery after SCI. This case report describes a patient who sustained a thoracic SCI four months ago due to a fall from height. Following surgical intervention and conventional rehabilitation, the patient's lower limb muscle strength remained at grade C on the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) impairment scale. After implantation of a closed-loop spinal ne

Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation for the Treatment of Burning Feet Syndrome Related to Erythromelalgia.

BACKGROUND: Erythromelalgia (EM) is a very rare condition characterized by severe paroxysmal pain in the upper or lower extremities and erythema, resulting in significant morbidity and incapacity. Typically, multiple specialty evaluations rule out competing autoimmune, inflammatory, and neuropathic etiologies. Both primary and secondary causes have been described, including peripheral nerve injury, carpal tunnel syndrome, and its surgical interventions. The condition is linked in primary EM to mutations in the sodium voltage-gated channel alpha subunit 9 gene, which encodes the Nav1.7 voltage-

Shape analysis of evoked action potentials recorded on the splenic nerve.

Stimulation of the splenic nerve represents a new way of treatment for inflammatory diseases and in particular rheumatoid arthritis. The implementation of this treatment requires studies on the functioning of the nerve and its response to stimulation in order to find the most suitable parameters allowing appropriate biological feedback while maintaining the condition of the nerve and optimizing the energy of the stimulation with a view to maximizing the lifespan of the future implantable device. In this study, we searched how to analyze the evoked nervous response to characterize the influence

Effects and safety of vagus nerve stimulation on upper limb function in patients with stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is used to deliver electric current to stimulate the vagus nerve. The aim of this study is to carry out a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine its effects on motor function in patients with stroke. PubMED, Embase, Web of Science (WoS), and Scopus were searched. Data on time since stroke, and mean scores and standard deviation on outcomes such as level of impairment and motor function were extracted. The results showed that invasive (MD 2.66, 95% CI 1.19-4.13, P = 0.0004) and non-invasive (MD 24.16, 95% CI 23.56-24.75, P = 0.00001) VNS are superior at i

Modeling the influence of the extrinsic musculature on phonation.

Neck muscles play important roles in various physiological tasks, including swallowing, head stabilization, and phonation. The mechanisms by which neck muscles influence phonation are not well understood, with conflicting reports on the change in fundamental frequency for ostensibly the same neck muscle activation scenarios. In this work, we introduce a reduced-order muscle-controlled vocal fold model, comprising both intrinsic muscle control and extrinsic muscle effects. The model predicts that when the neck muscles pull the thyroid cartilage in the superior-anterior direction (with a suffici
