Traumatic cataracts secondary to combat ocular trauma.

PURPOSE: To describe the characteristics, visual outcomes, and predictive value of the Ocular Trauma Score (OTS) in eyes with traumatic cataract from combat ocular trauma. SETTING: Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC, USA. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: Records of service members with traumatic cataract from combat ocular trauma over a 7-year period were reviewed. Surgical vs medical management of chronic open-angle glaucoma.

PURPOSE: We studied patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma who had similar intraocular pressures to determine whether surgical or medical therapy is more effective in preventing progressive, long-term, glaucomatous damage. METHODS: Included in this study were patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma who were followed for 3 years or longer and were treated, through either medical or surgical therapy, by adjusting intraocular pressure to 18 mm Hg or less as a therapeutic end point. We studied 31 matched pairs of patients in which one member was treated by surgery and one member had medical

Clinical Outcomes of a Refractive Extended Depth of Focus Intraocular Lens.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical and patient-reported outcomes of the toric version of a refractive extended depth of focus intraocular lens (IOL). METHODS: This was a prospective observational study including 26 eyes of 26 patients (age range: 58 to 88 years) who underwent cataract surgery with implantation of the LuxSmart toric IOL (Bausch & Lomb GmbH). Changes in distance, intermediate (80 cm), and near (40 cm) visual acuities, manifest refraction, defocus curve, distance photopic contrast sensitivity (CSV-1000 test), and patient-reported outcomes (Catquest-9SF questionnaire) were evaluat

Assessing the clinical outcomes of a novel EDOF intraocular lens: a functional classification approach.

BACKGROUND: Functional assessment can help identify the true extended depth of focus intraocular lenses (EDOF IOLs) on the market. This study aimed to demonstrate the eligibility of the 877PEY ELON IOL (Medicontur Medical Engineering) as a suitable model for this category and to assess its efficacy in clinical settings. METHODS: In total, 38 patients (76 eyes) were enrolled in the study with bilateral implantation of the investigational IOL. For functional classification, a distance-corrected monocular defocus curve was taken 3 months postoperatively. At the 3- and 12-month follow-ups, manife

Clinical performance of a hydrophobic acrylic toric intraocular lens with a double C-loop haptics in Japanese patients.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical performance of a hydrophobic acrylic toric intraocular lens (IOL) with double C-loop haptics in a Japanese population with cataracts. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective METHODS: The PODEYE TORIC IOL (POD T 49P) was implanted in 58 eyes from 42 patients diagnosed with bilateral cataracts with corneal astigmatism. Thirty-one eyes received IOLs with cylinder powers of 1.50 to 6.00 D (group A), and 27 eyes received IOLs with 1.00 D cylinder (group B). Uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuities, and refractive cylinder were examined postoperatively. T

Purpose: To report a patient with Pierson syndrome who presented with neovascular glaucoma (NVG) after cataract surgery. Methods: Retrospective case report. Results: A 17-year old monocular female presented with sudden onset of pain and decreased vision in the right eye. On examination, she had intraocular pressure (IOP) of 50 mmHg, aggressive iris neovascularization (NVI) and 3-piece IOL. Fundus examination revealed pale disc with tessellated fundus and parapapillary atrophy. Vascular arcades were vertically stretched with avascular ischemic retina starting from the near periphery. Glaucomatous Progression After Lens Extraction in Primary Angle Closure Disease Spectrum.

PRECIS: Substantial proportion of primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) eyes showed glaucomatous worsening after successful lens extraction and intraocular pressure (IOP) control, which may suggest that an earlier intervention may be required to prevent PACG. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the longitudinal clinical course of the primary angle closure (PAC) disease spectrum, including PAC, primary angle closure suspect (PACS), and PACG patients, who underwent lens extraction. METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 77 eyes from patients with PACS, PAC,

PURPOSE: To investigate the intraocular lens (IOL) position and refractive outcomes after cataract surgery and phacovitrectomy using swept-source anterior segment OCT (SS-ASOCT). DESIGN: Retrospective case series. PARTICIPANTS: Patients underwent cataract surgery (group A: 34 eyes), phacovitrectomy without gas tamponade (group B: 20 eyes), and phacovitrectomy with gas tamponade (group C: 22 eyes). METHODS: Various parameters associated with the anterior chamber and lens were measured by SS-ASOCT (CASIA2; Tomey Corp, Nagoya, Japan) before and after surgery. Axial lengths were measured by opt

PURPOSE: To compare parameters after 1-piece and 3-piece intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. SETTING: Moorfields West End Clinic, London, United Kingdom, and Hanusch Hospital, Vienna, Austria. DESIGN: Prospective randomized controlled trial. METHODS: Each eye of patients having bilateral surgery for age-related cataract was randomized to have implantation of a 1-piece IOL (Tecnis ZCB00) or a 3-piece IOL (Tecnis ZA9003). Intraocular lens implantation procedures in aphakic eyes with insufficient capsular support associated with previous cataract surgery.

PURPOSE: The aim was to evaluate the results of three different secondary intraocular lens implantation (IOL) procedures in aphakic eyes without capsular support METHODS: In this retrospective comparative case series, 90 eyes of 90 patients who underwent secondary IOL implantation for correction of aphakia were enrolled. Patients were divided into three groups based on the secondary IOL implantation procedure: anterior chamber iris-fixated IOL (AC-IFIOL), retropupillary iris-fixated IOL (RP-IFIOL), and scleral-fixated posterior chamber IOL (SF-PCIOL). The efficacy and safety of each procedure

PURPOSE: To evaluate posterior capsule opacification (PCO) 2 years after cataract surgery with implantation of a hydrophobic acrylic or single-piece sharp-edged hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lens (IOL). SETTING: Toyama Prefectural Central Hospital, Toyama, Japan. DESIGN: Case-control study. METHODS: Patients with bilateral senile cataract were prospectively randomized to receive a hydrophobic IOL (Acrysof SA60AT) in 1 eye and a hydrophilic IOL (Meridian HP60M) in the other eye.
