Sprains and fractures are common injuries in the athlete because of the force of impact on the ankle during activity. This study investigated the relationship between exposure time and ankle sprains in soccer. Forty-one teams (639 players) from four male senior soccer divisions at different levels of skill (divisions I-VI) were followed prospectively for 1 year. Ankle sprains are common and often are treated inadequately. Unstable lateral ankle ligaments cause abnormal ankle motion and can lead to degenerative changes. Arthrography is the superior radiographic study in acutely injured ankles. The use of Hoffmann external fixation in the treatment of ankle and foot trauma in 26 patients is reviewed. There were 21 males and five females, ranging in age from 14 to 56 years. We report the results of a simple technique of ankle arthrodesis which is, however, indicated only when the foot can be reduced manually to a functional position. A special milling-cutter with an expulsion piston is used to obtain a cylindrical bone graft which is reintroduced having been reversed from left to right and rotated through 90 degrees. In children valgus deformities of the ankle joint are usually due to neurological conditions (spina bifida, poliomyelitis, spasticity). The deformity is characterized by a shortened fibula, wedging of distal tibial epiphysis and valgus tilt of the talus. Although adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder is a common clinical syndrome, adhesive capsulitis in other joints has rarely been reported. Four patients who developed adhesive capsulitis of the hip joint after trauma and two patients with adhesive capsulitis of the ankle, also precipitated by trauma, are described. The diagnosis of adhesive capsulitis is easily made during arthrography when a joint of low volume and high intracapsular pressure is encountered.

Lateral instability of the ankle in a young athlete is often very disabling. When conservative management of this instability fails, a surgical procedure described by Chrisman and Snook reconstructs both the anterior fibulotalar and fibulocalcaneal ligaments. In eleven patients who were followed for more than two years, this procedure gave predictably good results. Return to full sports activities can be expected for the young athlete.
