OBJECTIVE: To determine prevalence of enteric zoonotic organisms in cats in north-central Colorado.
DESIGN: Prospective study.
SAMPLE POPULATION: Serum and fecal samples from 87 cats with diarrhea, 106 cats without diarrhea, and 12 cats for which fecal consistency was unknown.

Three cats with upper respiratory tract obstruction due to laryngeal inflammation are presented. Cervical radiography showed the presence of a soft tissue mass in the laryngeal region in all cases, and laryngoscopy allowed direct visualization of a mass associated with the larynx. Laryngeal samples were obtained by a combination of fine needle aspiration, cutting biopsy forceps, by ventral laryngotomy, and at post-mortem. Pets like dogs and cats are responsible for a series of zoonotic disorders. Some of these diseases are inflicted by bites, scratches or licking. Others result from a close contact with fur, or are transmitted by ectoparasites or by the contaminated environment. Some systemic infectious and parasitic diseases are transmitted from animals to humans and vice versa. Such situation may lead to endemic problems in some communities.

A soft tissue sarcoma occurred in the interscapular area of a cat, 1 to 7 months after vaccination at that site. The vaccine contained inactivated feline panleucopaenia virus combined with modified live feline herpesvirus and calicivirus. The tumour showed histological features of both fibrosarcoma and malignant fibrous histiocytoma. The tumour was observed to evolve from the site of a presumed postvaccinal granuloma. Conjunctival swabs collected in 1991-92 from 333 pedigree and non-pedigree cats were tested for the presence of Chlamydia spp. antigen using an ELISA antigen kit. Forty (18.4%) of the 217 samples from cats with conjunctivitis were positive. Seven (6%) of 116 samples from cats which were in contact with cats with conjunctivitis but which showed no clinical signs at the time of sample collection were positive. In cats, clinical signs of constipation usually respond to laxatives, fecal softeners, enemas, and dietary management. Uncommonly, constipation is chronic and is associated with a marked increase in the diameter of the colon. When megacolon is present, constipation responds poorly to medical therapy. Tumours with a plasmacytoid pattern taken from 32 dogs and four cats were examined for the presence of immunoglobulins, which would allow them to be designated as B-cell lymphomas. Over a reporting period of 5 years, craniotomy was performed in 26 dogs and 5 cats with various intracranial lesions. X-ray computed tomography was performed in all animals prior to surgery. A 9-month-old cat, presented for castration, lacked scrotal testes and a developed scrotum but had a normal penis. Normal testes were removed at celiotomy. The cat had a normal 38 XY karyotype. A 3-year-old cat, presented for cystotomy and urolith removal, had a vulva, a scrotum without testes and a 3-mm rudimentary penis. No castration scars were evident on the scrotum, and no testes could be located within the abdomen. Though a karyotype was not performed, it was presumed to be the normal 38 XY found in pseudohermaphrodites.

Meningiomas are the most common central nervous system tumor of the cat, with an age at diagnosis of greater than nine years in 73% of the affected animals. Four of seven cats with alpha-L-iduronidase deficient mucopolysaccharidosis I had meningiomas at postmortem examination. All four cats were less than three years of age. The relationship between the meningiomas and the metabolic defect of MPS I is not clear.

Retinal projections were examined in two tyrosinase-negative albino cats using autoradiographic techniques. Cats from this colony have pink eyes; their retinal pigment epithelium, ciliary body, and iris epithelium are completely devoid of melanin pigment.
