Flood Risk to Hospitals on the United States Atlantic and Gulf Coasts From Hurricanes and Sea Level Rise.

Hurricanes have caused major healthcare system disruptions. No systematic assessment of hurricane risk to United States hospital-based healthcare delivery has been performed. Here, we show that 25 of 78 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) on the United States Atlantic and Gulf Coasts have half or more of their hospitals at risk of flooding from relatively weak hurricanes. 0.82 m of sea level rise expected within this century from climate change increases the odds of hospital flooding 22%. Furthermore, in 18 MSAs at least half of the roads within 1.6 km of hospitals were at risk of flooding f

Benefits of and strategies to update premium rates in the US National Flood Insurance Program under climate change.

The United States' National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) has accumulated over $20 billion in debt to the US Treasury since 2005, partly due to discounted premiums on homes in flood-prone areas. To address this issue, FEMA introduced Risk Rating 2.0 in October 2021, which is able to assess and charge more accurate and equitable rates to homeowners. However, rates must be continually updated to account for increasing flood damage caused by sea level rise and more intense hurricanes due to climate change. This study proposes a strategy to adopt updated premium rates that account for climate cha

A novel flood risk mapping approach with machine learning considering geomorphic and socio-economic vulnerability dimensions.

Quantifying flood hazards by employing hydraulic/hydrodynamic models for flood risk mapping is a widely implemented non-structural flood management strategy. However, the unavailability of multi-domain and multi-dimensional input data and expensive computational resources limit its application in resource-constrained regions. The fifth and sixth IPCC assessment reports recommend including vulnerability and exposure components along with hazards for capturing risk on human-environment systems from natural and anthropogenic sources. In this context, the present study showcases a novel flood risk

Assessment of the Transmission Risk of Schistosomiasis after Flooding - North Poyang Lake, Jiangxi Province, China, 2020.

What is already known about this topic? Over 90% of Oncomelania snails, the only intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum, are distributed in the middle and low reaches of Yangtze River. Flooding can extend the distribution of Oncomelania snails and hence accelerate the transmission of schistosomiasis. What is added by this report? Although the dispersal of Oncomelania snails was negligible in north Poyang Lake after flooding in 2020, 2 samples of cattle feces with Schistosoma egg and 2 infected snails samples were indeed found. All four risk sites were distributed in Lushan County. Cattle f

Potential impact of flooding on schistosomiasis in Poyang Lake regions based on multi-source remote sensing images.

BACKGROUND: Flooding is considered to be one of the most important factors contributing to the rebound of Oncomelania hupensis, a small tropical freshwater snail and the only intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum, in endemic foci. The aim of this study was to assess the risk of intestinal schistosomiasis transmission impacted by flooding in the region around Poyang Lake using multi-source remote sensing images. METHODS: Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data collected by the Landsat 8 satellite were used as an ecological and geographical suitability indicator of O. hupensis h

Combined application of ferrihydrite and hydroxyapatite to immobilize soil copper, cadmium, and phosphate under flooding-drainage alternations.

Hydroxyapatite (HAP) can effectively immobilize soil heavy metals, but excess phosphate would be released to aquatic ecosystem, resulting in eutrophication. This study investigated the effects of ferrihydrite (FH) on the HAP immobilization of copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) and their reduction of phosphorus release under flooding-drainage alternation conditions. Results showed that the incorporation of HAP and FH significantly increased soil solution pH and decreased Cu2+ and Cd2+ concentrations. Applications of FH, HAP, and FH-HAP (FH and HAP combination) can all enhance soil pH and reduce CaCl2

The Complex Epidemiological Relationship between Flooding Events and Human Outbreaks of Mosquito-Borne Diseases: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is expected to increase the frequency of flooding events. Although rainfall is highly correlated with mosquito-borne diseases (MBD) in humans, less research focuses on understanding the impact of flooding events on disease incidence. This lack of research presents a significant gap in climate change-driven disease forecasting. OBJECTIVES: We conducted a scoping review to assess the strength of evidence regarding the potential relationship between flooding and MBD and to determine knowledge gaps. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched through 31 D

Rising oceans, flooded towns: How Georgia coastline communities are readying to recover despite a changing climate.

Climate change is posing a significant threat to the coastal counties of Georgia. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Hagerty Consulting have recognised this threat and are facilitating a nine-year project aimed at developing a disaster recovery and redevelopment plan for the state's coastal communities, and providing state-wide technical assistance. This paper provides an overview of this planning initiative and summarises the many insights into the pre-disaster recovery and resilience planning process gained from this project.

Developing a research-specific emergency management programme for municipal resilience following the 2013 flood in southern Alberta.

Calgary was significantly impacted by the southern Alberta floods in 2013. Prior to the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfires (also in Alberta), these floods were the costliest disaster in Canadian history. In the aftermath, the Conference Board of Canada's independent review of the overall performance of Calgary's Recovery Operations Centre (ROC) recommended the need to: (1) include community actors and external stakeholders; and (2) develop pre-event situational awareness for those citizens who lack the ability to request assistance through regular channels. In response to these findings and a seemin…

Carbon dioxide field flooding reduces the hemodynamic effects of venous air embolism occurring in the sitting position.

PURPOSE: Although the utility of the sitting position is undisputed for biomechanical and ergonomic reasons, it has been debated in recent years for its risks, particularly venous air embolism (VAE). In order to reduce the hemodynamic effect of VAE, we changed the composition of the surgical field air partially replacing nitrogen with carbon dioxide (CO2) that better dissolves in human tissues. METHODS: First, we tested our method on a test dummy in the sitting position. Infrared CO2 sensors were placed close to the wound opening and on the facial mask of the surgeon. An oxygen sensor was con

[The presence of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in flood containment reservoirs in the eastern region of the City of São Paulo, Brazil].

INTRODUCTION: Alterations in the environment contribute to changes in weather patterns, which cause an increase in rainfall, which causes flooding. Flooding has been addressed by building reservoirs, called piscinões, to contain the excess rain. In this report, we evaluated the Culicidae fauna of epidemiological importance in the reservoirs of Caguaçu and Inhumas. METHODS: Monthly collections were performed in both reservoirs, which are situated in the Eastern section of the City of São Paulo. Monthly collections of Culicidae were undertaken using the entomological scoop method and a battery

A terrain-guided and physics-constrained dual-stream network for real-time high-resolution urban flood mapping.

High-resolution (HR) flood inundation mapping is vital for emergency response, yet meter-scale hydrodynamic simulations remain computationally prohibitive over large domains. While deep learning-based super-resolution (SR) offers an efficient alternative, conventional architectures suffer from micro-topographic feature dilution, drainage channel disconnection, and unphysical high-ground ponding at large scaling factors. To overcome these challenges, this study develops a DEM-guided Dual-Stream Super-Resolution framework (DDS-SR) integrated with physics-informed soft regularizers. DDS-SR decoup
