A working model of the neurophysiology of hypnosis suggests that highly hypnotizable individuals (HHs) have more effective frontal attentional systems implementing control, monitoring performance, and inhibiting unwanted stimuli from conscious awareness, than low hypnotizable individuals (LHs). Recent studies, using prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the auditory startle reflex (ASR), suggest that HHs, in the waking condition, may show reduced sensory gating although they may selectively attend and disattend different stimuli. Using a within subject design and a strict subject selection procedure, i

Autism spectrum disorders are associated with atypically excessive early brain growth. Recent studies suggest that later cortical development, specifically cortical thickness, during adolescence and young adulthood is also aberrant. Nevertheless, previous studies of other surface-based metrics (e.g. surface area and gyrification) at high-resolution in autism spectrum disorders are limited. Forty-one males with autism spectrum disorders and 39 typically developing males matched on age (mean ≈ 17; range = 12-24 years) and IQ (mean ≈ 113; range = 85-143) provided high-resolution 3 T anatomical ma

The von Economo neurons (VENs) are large bipolar neurons located in frontoinsular (FI) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) in great apes and humans but not other primates. We stereologically counted the VENs in FI and the limbic anterior (LA) area of ACC and found them to be more numerous in humans than in apes. In humans, VENs first appear in small numbers in the 36th week postconception are rare at birth and increase in number during the first 8 months after birth. There are significantly more VENs in the right hemisphere than the left in FI and LA in postnatal brains; this may be related to

Previous studies showed that the understanding of others' basic emotional experiences is based on a "resonant" mechanism, i.e., on the reactivation, in the observer's brain, of the cerebral areas associated with those experiences. The present study aimed to investigate whether the same neural mechanism is activated both when experiencing and attending complex, cognitively-generated, emotions. A gambling task and functional-Magnetic-Resonance-Imaging (fMRI) were used to test this hypothesis using regret, the negative cognitively-based emotion resulting from an unfavorable counterfactual compari

OBJECTIVE: Few neuroimaging studies have been conducted regarding clinical associations between auditory hallucinations (AHs) and affective disturbances in patients with schizophrenia. This study aimed to elucidate the neurobiological basis of emotional disturbances in schizophrenic patients with persisting AHs.
METHODS: Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the cortical responsiveness during the processing of laughing and crying sounds was measured and compared between 14 hallucinating schizophrenic patients, 14 nonhallucinating schizophrenic patients and 28 normal controls.

Looking at still images of body parts in situations that are likely to cause pain has been shown to be associated with activation in some brain areas involved in pain processing. Because pain involves both sensory components and negative affect, it is of interest to explore whether the visually evoked representations of pain and of other negative emotions overlap. By means of event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging, here we compare the brain areas recruited, in female volunteers, by the observation of painful, disgusting, or neutral stimuli delivered to one hand or foot. BACKGROUND: People with persecutory delusions regard ambiguous data in the social domain as self-relevant and selectively attend to threatening information. This study aimed to characterize these social cognitive biases in functional neuroanatomical terms.
METHOD: Eight schizophrenic patients with active persecutory delusions and eight matched normal controls underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while determining the self-relevance of ambiguous self-relevant or unambiguous other-relevant neutral and threatening statements.
RESULTS: In determining self-relevance, the deluded subjec

Somatotopic organization of the human medial wall of the cerebral hemispheres was studied using functional MRI conducted at high field strength (3 T) with fine spatial resolution ( approximately 2 mm). Healthy subjects performed paced, repetitive movements of the fingers and toes. Within the supplementary motor area (SMA), two regions were identified: finger movements activated a region rostral and superior to that for toe movements. Two activation foci were also identified in the cingulate motor area: toe movements activated a region rostral and ventral to that activated by finger movements.

A 69 year-old right-handed man suffered from an infarct in the left anterior cerebral territory's artery, involving the anterior and middle parts of the corpus callosum, and the cingulum. He had a right crural hemiparesis with a grasp reflex of the right hand, and ipsilaterally a melokinetic and a dynamic apraxia. Agility of the left fingers was lost: fast and nimble movements of theses fingers, and repetitive gestures of the left hand were defective. Execution of motor sequences with the left hand was disrupted by a lack of litheness in gesture series. By analogy with unilateral left ideomoto

On the basis of an own observation of polyposis coli combined with lipomatous hamartoma of the corpus callosum problems of the genesis of lipomas of the central nervous system and its coverings are discussed. Colectomy was performed in a 37-year-old man because of polyposis coli. His sister suffers from the same disease. The patient died 25 d after the operation as a result of diffuse peritonitis. As an incidental finding, the autopsy revealed a lipomatous hamartoma with a diameter of approximately 1 cm. Histologically the growth showed the typical structure of a lipoma and contained a remarka

Following lesions of various parts of the cat cerebral cortex, the distribution of degenerating fibers in the pontine nuclei was mapped in drawings of serial transverse and horizontal sections of Fink and Heimer. All parts of the cerebrum give rise to the corticopontine fibers and each functionally uniform area has its particular projection zones in the pons. Thus, it has been shown that the pontine projection zones from the sensorimotor, auditory, orbital, cingulate and "association" cortices are arranged in longitudinal columns throughout the pons, mostly in well delimited columns, while tho

Recent years have seen a growing interest in the neuroscience of spontaneous cognition. One form of such cognition is involuntary musical imagery (INMI), the non-pathological and everyday experience of having music in one's head, in the absence of an external stimulus. In this study, aspects of INMI, including frequency and affective evaluation, were measured by self-report in 44 subjects and related to variation in brain structure in these individuals. Frequency of INMI was related to cortical thickness in regions of right frontal and temporal cortices as well as the anterior cingulate and le

BACKGROUND: Little is known about connectivity within the default mode network (DMN) in heroin-dependent individuals (HDIs). In the current study, diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) and resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) were combined to investigate both structural and functional connectivity within the DMN in HDIs.
METHODS: Fourteen HDIs and 14 controls participated in the study. Structural (path length, tracts count, (fractional anisotropy) FA and (mean diffusivity) MD derived from DTI tractography)and functional (temporal correlation coefficient derived from rs-fMRI) DMN connectivity chang

BACKGROUND: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is associated with increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the underlying mechanisms for this association remain unclear. Neuroimaging studies suggest the earliest AD-related changes are large-scale network disruptions, beginning in the posterior default mode (pDMN) network.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between SCD and pDMN network connectivity with medial temporal lobe (MTL) regions using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging.
METHODS: Forty-nine participants with either SCD (n = 23, 12 females; me

Tinnitus can be distressful, and tinnitus distress has been linked to increased beta oscillatory activity in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC). The amount of distress is linked to alpha activity in the medial temporal lobe (amygdala and parahippocampal area), as well as the subgenual (sg)ACC and insula, and the functional connectivity between the parahippocampal area and the sgACC at 10 and 11.5 Hz. The authors describe 2 patients with very severely distressing intractable tinnitus who underwent transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) with a double-cone coil targeting the dACC and su

The purpose of the present study was to establish a short paradigm for the examination of classical aversive conditioning processes for application in patients with anxiety disorders. We measured behavioral, autonomic and neural correlates of the paradigm in healthy subjects, applying functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and measurement of skin conductance. Therefore, neutral visual stimuli were paired with an unpleasant white noise as unconditioned stimulus. Twenty healthy subjects performed three experimental phases of learning: familiarization, acquisition and extinction. Subjective

The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) is a principal target for transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in treating major depressive disorder, with therapeutic effects thought to be mediated by its connectivity with the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex. As both regions are involved in autonomic regulation, short-term heart rate changes following DLPFC stimulation may serve as physiological markers to identify stimulation targets. We employed neuro-cardiac guided TMS in a cohort of healthy participants to examine the effects of stimulation intensity and DLPFC target specificity on heart

Successful goal-directed behavior often requires the exertion of effortful control processes. The striatum is thought to play a key role in determining whether a goal is worth the required cognitive effort, but whether and how the striatum causally influences effort-based decisions in humans remains unclear. Here, we address this gap by employing transcranial temporal interference stimulation (tTIS), a novel non-invasive brain stimulation technique capable of targeting deeper brain regions. In particular, we applied striatum-targeted tTIS to healthy participants performing an effort-based deci
