BACKGROUND: Internal fixation of complex coronal shear distal humerus fractures is challenged by the absence of metaphyseal osseous extension often limiting fixation strategies to intra-articular screws or wires alone. Complex injury patterns involving the entire articular surface, presence of comminution and impaction, may need additional fixation. Supplemental plating of these injuries is currently limited to the posterolateral distal humeral surface, which is biomechanically not favorable to provide an efficient buttress fixation. Anterior plating provides the best possible neutralization o

OBJECTIVE To evaluate outcome of limb fracture repair in rabbits. DESIGN Retrospective case series. ANIMALS 139 client-owned rabbits with limb fractures treated between 2007 and 2015. PROCEDURES Medical records were reviewed for information on fracture location, fracture treatment, and time to fracture healing. RESULTS 25 rabbits had fractures involving the distal aspects of the limbs (ie, metacarpal or metatarsal bones, phalanges, and calcaneus or talus). Fractures were treated in 23 of these 25 rabbits (external coaptation, n = 17; external skeletal fixation, 4; and intramedullary pinning, 2

A man in his 40s from a rural area presented with progressive pain and functional limitation of the right arm without trauma. Imaging revealed an aggressive lytic lesion with pathological fracture of the distal humerus. Staging studies excluded other lesions. Percutaneous biopsy confirmed osseous hydatid disease. Preoperative albendazole was administered, followed by wide en bloc resection of a 15 cm humeral segment with preservation of neurovascular structures. Reconstruction was achieved using a modular distal humerus endoprosthesis. Postoperative albendazole continued for 6 weeks. At 12 mon

BACKGROUND: Coronal shear fractures of the distal humerus are rare but severe injuries. Reconstruction is often challenging, especially in comminuted cases, which is why many surgeons opt for an elbow arthroplasty in those cases. However, total elbow arthroplasty is associated with a variety of potential problems itself. Therefore, the aim of this study was to present the functional and clinical outcome of coronal shear fractures treated by osteosynthetic reconstruction in a short- to mid-term follow-up, and to identify possible risk factors for an inferior outcome.

BACKGROUND: Loss of motion is common after intercondylar fracture of the distal humerus despite proper management. The purpose of the current study was to report the results of contracture release for stiffness that developed after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of distal humeral intercondylar fractures.
METHODS: Twenty-four consecutive patients with a stiff elbow after ORIF of intercondylar fractures (20 AO type C2 and 4 type C3 fractures) were managed with contracture release at a median of 13 months. The surgical indication was total arc of motion of less than 100° despite phy

To evaluate the factors resulting in mechanical failures of internal fixation of distal T-type and Y-type humeral fractures, we reviewed the clinical course and final results in 61 consecutive cases treated with AO-ASIF internal fixation devices. The patients were followed for at least 2 years (range, 2-11 years). Mechanical failure occurred in 18 cases (29.5%). In 12 patients this resulted from an unstable fixation. Severe osteoporosis was present in four patients. In two patients no specific causative factor could be detected. A second osteosynthesis was undertaken in five patients, and four

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Communitive fractures of the radial head are a therapeutic challenge when fixation is not possible. Secondary sequelae including ulnar valgus, ascension of the radius, osteoporosis of the humeral condyle and biomechanical impairment of the elbow cannot be avoided with resection or the Swanson prosthesis. The Judet prosthesis, with its floating cup, is a technically attractive solution, but the question is whether it can avoid the secondary effects observed with resection or the Swanson prosthesis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We have used the Judet prosthesis since August 1995

INTRODUCTION: In reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) new designs enable greater amounts of lateralization to prevent instability and scapular notching and increase range of motion, however, excessive lateralization leads to stress upon the acromion that can result in scapular spine fatigue fractures. Aim of this study was to gender- and size-specifically assess the influence of glenosphere size and different humeral designs on lateralization, distalization, and bony impingement-free range of motion (ROM) in patients undergoing RSA.
METHODS: Computed tomography scans from 30 osteoarthritic pat

Hackethal's technique of stacked intramedullary (IM) nailing was used to treat 43 consecutive acute fractures of the humeral diaphysis. Of these, 6 were lost to follow-up and 4 additional patients were excluded for pathologic fractures. All of the remaining 33 traumatic fractures were followed until union. The average age was 34 years. Mean operative time was 90 min. Usually four or five 2- or 3-mm IM Kirschner wires were introduced in a retrograde manner, through a posterior unicortical window under radioscopic control. Closed reductions were performed in 28 patients, and open reductions were

Here, we describe a modified osteotomy for malunion of the greater tuberosity that facilitates bone union and prevents symptom recurrence. The 3 most important features of this technique are: (1) osteotomizing the displaced fragment that includes the bed of the fracture, (2) placing figure-of-eight sutures by passing suture threads from inside the medullary cavity through osseous holes made in the metaphysis, and (3) pushing the distal end of the osteotomized fragment into the medullary cavity and fixing it in place. This procedure was performed on 10 patients who complained of clinical sympto

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric fracture non-union is more common than generally expected. The risk factors are similar to those in adults, and treatment remains equally challenging. Surgery is almost always necessary to restart the healing process. One of the conservative options now being used is low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS). It has been applied both in fresh fractures to stimulate all stages of healing and in non-unions, working by promoting repair at the molecular level.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of a distal one-third humeral shaft fracture in a child that developed atrophic non-u

The aim of this study was to describe the radiographic appearance and to evaluate the elbow function with the Mayo elbow performance score (MEPS) in children with medial condyle fracture of the distal humerus (MCFH) who were treated surgically. During the period of 2011-2017, a total of 10 patients (three boys, seven girls) were retrospectively reviewed after obtaining institutional review board approval. All patients underwent open reduction and percutaneous pinning fixation. The average age at the time of injury was 7.7 years (range: 4.0-12.5 years), and the mean follow up was 43.9 months (r

A few treatment options for radial neck non-union have been reported, including radial head excision, radial head replacement, and internal fixation with a bone graft. We describe a new treatment for radial neck non-union using a reverse vascularized bone graft of the lateral distal humerus. In the anatomical study, the posterior radial collateral artery (PRCA) was dissected in eight fresh-frozen cadaver arms. The number of branches from the PRCA to the humerus was determined, and the distances from these branches to the lateral epicondyle of the humerus were measured. We then used this inform

BACKGROUND: The optimal surgical technique for humeral shaft fractures remains debated, and earlier syntheses often pooled all plate constructs, disregarding the distinction between open reduction and plate fixation (ORPF) and minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO). This network meta-analysis compared ORPF, MIPO, and intramedullary nailing (IMN), focusing on iatrogenic radial nerve injury.
METHODS: We searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, and Scopus from inception through December 2024, with the PubMed search updated through January 2026, following the PRISMA network meta

Fixation of distal femoral fractures is often challenging due to the fracture configuration and associated poor bone quality. Dual plating (lateral and medial) has become an acceptable option to provide improved stability versus a single plate fixation. Though there are several commercially available anatomically designed plates for the lateral femoral condyle, there is no anatomic plate available in UK specifically for medial fixation of distal femur fractures. Our aim is to determine the best suited pre-contoured plate for stabilising the medial femoral condyle (MFC). Right sided femur sawbo

BACKGROUND: Proximal humeral fractures with substantial metaphyseal comminution are challenging to treat. In the elderly with osteoporotic bone, arthroplasty sometimes remains the only valuable option; however, the minimally required length of stem fixation is not known. The aim of this study was to investigate the primary stability of cemented short- and long-stem prostheses with different intramedullary fracture bypass lengths.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Osteoporotic composite bone models of the humerus (Synbone, Malans, Switzerland) with 3 different fracture levels (group A, 6 cm distal to sur
