Becker's nevus (BN) is a benign, unilateral hamartoma characterized by hyperpigmentation and hypertrichosis. Laser and light-based therapies represent the primary treatment modalities. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the 1064-nm Nd: YAG picosecond laser in the treatment of Becker's nevus in a Chinese population. This was a retrospective, single-center study of patients with BN treated between March 2021 and August 2025. Efficacy was assessed via photographic evaluation by two independent dermatologists using a 4-point improvement scale. All patients were treated with 1064-nm Nd: YAG pic…

Hypertrichosis is a rare condition characterized by excessive growth of hair (terminal, vellus or lanugo) in areas of the body that are not predominantly androgen dependent, and it is independent of age, race or sex. It can be congenital, late-onset, generalized, localized, inherited or acquired. More than 50 different OMIM entries related to hypertrichosis exist, few of them with a localized gene locus or with a candidate gene. The review of generalized hypertrichoses from a historical point of view, including a review of their clinical and genetic features, shows heterogeneity with at least …

Nevus spilus (NS), also known as speckled lentiginous nevus, is characterized by background café au lait-like lentiginous melanocytic hyperplasia speckled with small, 1- to 3-mm, darker foci. Nevus spilus occurs in 1.3% to 2.3% of the adult population worldwide. Reports of melanoma arising within hypertrichotic NS suggest that hypertrichosis may be a marker for the development of melanoma. We present a case of a hypertrichotic NS without melanoma and also provide a review of previously reported cases of hypertrichosis in NS. We believe that NS has a lower risk for malignant degeneration than c…

Faun tail is a triangle-shaped hypertrichosis of the lumbosacral region. It is a rare condition and it can be a cutaneous marker of underlying spinal cord anomaly. We report on a 17-year-old female patient with hypertrichosis on the lumbosacral area since birth that was later diagnosed with tethered cord in magnetic resonance imaging.

The author's aim was to contribute information to the history of porphyrias through the analysis of a 16th century portrait. The subject drawn by physician Aldrovandi is a 20-year-old girl showing remarkable facial hypertrichosis, while her body is described as hairless. After a brief excursus through the history of porphyrias, the author revisited a previous diagnosis of hypertrichosis lanuginosa with the aid of current clinical findings. Accurate research of the drawings by the 16th century physician together with the study of our case's family history have supplied information on the young …

Germline mutations in the SLC29A3 gene result in a range of recessive, clinically related syndromes: H syndrome, pigmented hypertrichosis with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus syndrome, Faisalabad histiocytosis, and sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy. The main symptoms of these diseases are hyperpigmentation with hypertrichosis, sensorineural deafness, diabetes, short stature, uveitis, and Rosai-Dorfman like histiocytosis. Here, we report the case of an 11-month-old boy with early-onset, recurrent episodes of unprovoked fever lasting 7 to 10 days and associated with pericardia…

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common malignancies in men worldwide. Androgens influence both prostate growth and hair patterns. Androgenic alopecia (male-pattern baldness) and excessive male-pattern body hair (hypertrichosis) have been hypothesized as clinical markers of long-term androgen exposure. Previous Western studies have reported mixed results on whether early-onset or severe androgenic alopecia correlates with increased prostate cancer risk. Data in South Indian (Dravidian) populations is lacking.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between androgenic hypertr…

This study explores the efficacy of glibenclamide, a KATP channel inhibitor, for treating Cantú syndrome (CS), a genetic disorder characterized by hypertrichosis and cardiovascular abnormalities. Treatment with glibenclamide for Cantú syndrome has only been reported in a single case report. In this study, we tested this repurposed drug in both a zebrafish model and an open-label trial with CS patients. CS zebrafish embryos, created using CRISPR/Cas9, were treated with glibenclamide. Their cardiac function was assessed using high-speed imaging. In the trial part of the study, four adults with C…

The rare condition in which one side of the body seems to grow faster than the other is called hemihypertrophy. This may be accepted as normal, but there are certain serious conditions that may be associated with this type of growth pattern. Congenital hypertrichosis is believed to be a genetic disorder that is inherited or occurs as a result of spontaneous mutation. The incidence of generalised congenital hypertrichosis is about one in a billion. A seven-month-old female case was brought to the hospital with growth and hairiness complaints, which were more apparent in the right side of the fa…

BACKGROUND: Hypertrichosis is common among recipients of lung transplantation taking cyclosporine and it poses a special psychosocial problem in children. Children and parents frequently inquire about methods of hair removal.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine preferred methods of hair removal in this population.
METHODS: We distributed a questionnaire to 104 pediatric recipients of lung transplantation. A total of 56 questionnaires (54%) were completed.
RESULTS: Of respondents, 91% (51 of 56) experienced hypertrichosis, 75% (38 of 51) of whom attempted treatment. Depilatory cream was the mo…

Barber Say syndrome (BSS) is a rare ectodermal dysplasia with neonatal onset characterized by congenital generalized hypertrichosis, atrophic skin, ectropion and macrostomia. A literature review showed less than 20 previously reported cases of Barber Say syndrome. This presentation reports a one day old female with syndrome face, low hairline, coarse face, macrostomia, thin upper lip, bilateral ectropion and hypertelorism, hypertrichosis, senile skin appearance, hypoplastic nipples and one area of mild skin atrophy. These findings are consistent with BSS.

CONTEXT: Pseudoacromegaly describes conditions with an acromegaly related physical appearance without abnormalities in the growth hormone (GH) axis. Acromegaloid facies, together with hypertrichosis, are typical manifestations of Cantú syndrome.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a three-generation family with 5 affected members, with marked acromegaloid facies and prominent hypertrichosis, due to a novel missense variant in the ABCC9 gene. The proband, a 2-year-old girl, was referred due to marked hypertrichosis, noticed soon after birth, associated with coarsening of her facial appearance. Her en…

ACTH, cortisol and PRL plasma levels were determined on day 7, 14, and 21 of the menstrual cycle in 20 females with hypertrichosis of whom 10 were smokers and 10 non-smokers. Significantly raised levels of all hormones considered were found in smokers throughout the cycle. These findings suggest a possible relationship between objective symptoms (hypertrichosis) and nicotine, mediated by complex changes in the endocrine pattern and presumably also due to the action of nicotine on the central nervous system.

Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is characterized by the slowly progressive fibrous enlargement of gingival tissue. It usually develops as an isolated disorder but can also be one feature of various syndromes. The currently preferred terminology of these syndromes mainly describes the clinical features of the disorder without identifying the cause. In this report, we present the 5-year follow up of a family with HGF and features of 3 previously described syndromes: Jones syndrome, Zimmerman-Laband syndrome, and HGF-hypertrichosis syndrome. The 45-year-old father had HGF, hypertrichosis, …
