2025 Donald Seldin Lecture: Leveraging Diverse Population Genomics and Multiomics Integration for Gene Discovery of Cardiovascular and Kidney Diseases.

This review discusses the implications of frameworks leveraging genetic admixture and multiomics data for advancing gene discovery in cardiovascular and kidney disease research. By broadening gene discovery efforts to additional populations that have a disproportionately high risk of disease and leveraging genetic diversity in admixed populations, studies can identify population-enriched risk variants that traditionally have been missed in genome-wide association studies. The use of multiomics approaches, including the transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome, advances a mechanistic understandi

A Mixed-Studies Review of the School-to-Prison Pipeline and a Call to Action for School Nurses.

Zero-tolerance school disciplinary policies have contributed to the proliferation of exclusionary practices, which increase the risk that minoritized students will be harmed by the school-to-prison pipeline (STPP). The purpose of this review was to explore factors that influence the STPP and highlight the role school nurses can play in protecting students from this public health crisis. We used a systematic mixed-studies review method, and 14 studies were included. Exclusionary discipline disproportionately affects minoritized students, but decreased student-teacher ratios, wellness-focused en

Children of the (gender) revolution: A theoretical and empirical synthesis of how gendered division of labour influences fertility.

Gender equity theories of fertility broadly predict that the lowest fertility in high-income settings will be seen in women facing a 'dual burden' of both paid and unpaid labour responsibilities, but that fertility will increase when male partners share domestic labour. Here we provide a critique of some gender equity theories of fertility in demography, and restate the hypothesis in terms of complementarity between partners. Further, we suggest authors use an interdisciplinary approach, such as integrating perspectives from evolutionary theory and the 'Traits-Desires-Intentions-Behaviour' fra

Biliary atresia: unity in diversity.

Biliary atresia (BA) is a rare disease of unknown origin and unsatisfying outcome. Single, multicenter and national evaluations of epidemiological and outcome data on BA have been periodically published over the course of decades. However, the diversity of the registered parameters and outcome measures impede comparability and cumulative analysis of these very worthwhile studies. Taking into account the fact that BA is a good example of translational research and transition of patients from pediatric surgery and hepatology to transplant surgery and hepatology in general, the interdisciplinary

Genetics, Alzheimer's disease and senile dementia.

Genetic factors in the aetiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD), are now being intensively investigated. The homogeneity of AD is under investigation. There are a few large kindreds with early onset of AD in whom transmission appears to be typically autosomal dominant, and 65% or more of the remaining cases at any age may have genetic aetiology. Both multifactorial and autosomal dominant inheritance with age-dependent expression have been proposed, but the late onset and death of unaffected relatives from competing causes make it difficult to choose between them. Lifetime risk gives the best esti

[Overweight and obesity in children and adolescents - inadequate quality of care from the perspective of paediatricians in Germany].

The prevalence of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents constitutes a significant health issue associated with a range of comorbidities. In Germany, the care provided to these young patients is often insufficient. The introduction of a disease management programme (DMP) for obesity in children and adolescents aims to improve interdisciplinary and guideline-based care. This study examines the perceptions and evaluations of paediatricians regarding the current state of obesity care.An online survey was conducted among 9662 paediatricians in Germany. 802 participants delivered comple

Shaping future leaders: developing an MPH leadership curriculum through problem-based learning.

Leadership is essential to public health practice, yet few MPH programs offer structured, integrated approaches to cultivating leadership competencies. At the University of North Carolina's Gillings School of Global Public Health, the Leadership in Practice (LIP) MPH concentration responds to this gap by embedding problem-based learning (PBL) throughout a multi-course curriculum designed to prepare students for real-world leadership challenges. Drawing on interdisciplinary faculty expertise and a constructivist pedagogical philosophy, the LIP curriculum emphasizes systems thinking, strategic d

The gender identity movement: a growing surgical-psychiatric liaison.

The evaluation and treatment of individuals with gender identity problems has resulted in an interesting and productive collaboration between several specialties of medicine. In particular, the psychiatrist and surgeon have joined hands in the management of these fascinating patients who feel they are trapped in the wrong body and insist upon correcting this cruel mistake of nature by undergoing sex reassignment surgery. Over the last two decades, some 40 centers have emerged in which interdisciplinary teams cooperate in the evaluation and treatment of these gender dysphoric patients. The mode

Herbal Interventions in Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review of Preclinical Studies.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by the progressive degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra of the midbrain. With its incidence rising annually, the multi-mechanistic pathogenesis of PD presents new opportunities for the development of multi-target therapies. While previous studies have explored the therapeutic potential of natural products in PD, existing reviews often focus on single mechanisms or a limited number of compounds. While previous studies have explored the therapeutic potential of natural products in

Implementation of a Specialty-Focused Musculoskeletal Service in a Medical Student-Run Free Clinic in Puerto Rico.

Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions are a leading cause of pain, disability, and functional limitation worldwide and disproportionately affect underserved populations. Student-run free clinics frequently provide essential primary care services but often lack the specialty capacity needed to address MSK-related complaints. This study describes the implementation of a specialty-focused MSK clinic within a community-based student-run free clinic in Puerto Rico. A specialty-focused MSK clinic was implemented within an existing student-run free clinic in Puerto Rico from April 2025 through March 2026

Interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation for patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and hypermobility spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic pain is a common manifestation of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and hypermobility spectrum disorders; thus it is often suggested that patients undergo generic interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation, despite there being little evidence to support this decision. The aim of this study is to examine the effectiveness of standard rehabilitation programmes for chronic pain on patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and hypermobility spectrum disorders, compared with patients with other chronic pain disorders. SUBJECTS: Data, collected between 2008 and 2016, were extracted from a Swedish nat

Systemic Bone Loss and Periodontal Disease: An Updated Review of a Bidirectional Association.

Background: Systemic bone loss, particularly osteoporosis, and periodontal disease are highly prevalent chronic conditions that share common risk factors and biological pathways. Increasing evidence suggests a bidirectional relationship between these conditions; however, findings remain heterogeneous and evolving. Objective: This review aims to evaluate and update current evidence on the bidirectional association between systemic bone loss and periodontal disease, with emphasis on underlying mechanisms and clinical implications. Methods: A narrative review of the literature was conducted using
