PURPOSE: To determine the characteristics of peripapillary hyperreflective ovoid mass-like structures (PHOMS) in patients with nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) and in normal adults.
METHODS: A total of 406 included eyes were divided into four groups: acute NAION group, chronic NAION group, unaffected group, and normal eyes group. PHOMS were detected on optical coherence tomography slices from optical coherence tomography angiography scans centered on the optic nerve head (ONH). The differences in age, sex, and ONH parameters were investigated between eyes with PHOMS and

OBJECTIVE: Although artificial intelligence (AI) models may offer innovative and powerful ways to use the wealth of data generated by diagnostic tools, there are important challenges related to their development and validation. Most notable is the lack of a perfect reference standard for glaucomatous optic neuropathy (GON). Because AI models are trained to predict presence of glaucoma or its progression, they generally rely on a reference standard that is used to train the model and assess its validity. If an improper reference standard is used, the model may be trained to detect or predict so

The differential diagnosis of swollen optic nerves differs according to whether the swelling is unilateral or bilateral, or whether visual function is normal or affected. Patients with a unilaterally swollen optic nerve and normal visual function most likely have optic nerve head drusen. Patients with abnormal visual function most likely have demyelinating optic neuritis or non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy. Patients with bilaterally swollen optic nerve heads and normal visual function most likely have papilloedema, and require neuroimaging followed by lumbar puncture. However,

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To elucidate peripapillary atrophy in glaucomatous optic neuropathy; its ranking in the morphologic diagnosis of the glaucoma, and its value for the differentiation of various types of chronic open-angle glaucoma, for the separation of glaucomatous eyes from nonglaucomatous eyes, and for the detection of progression of glaucoma.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies showed an association of peripapillary atrophy with glaucoma and the eventual development of glaucomatous disc hemorrhages independent of a small neuroretinal rim area, and an association between increasing peripapill

Different parts of the tench optic nerve--the intraocular and intraorbital segments, the chiasm, and the post-chiasmatic segment--were studied using light and electron microscopy. From the head of the optic nerve, a zone of continuous growth constituted by the younger non-myelinated ganglion axons can be differentiated from a mature zone where almost all the axons are myelinated. The transition from one zone to the other is progressive. The area containing only non-myelinated axons is very restricted, and the presence of myelinated and non-myelinated axons in the same fascicle is frequent. In

A 29-year-old woman had a pigmented ciliary body mass that extended through the iris into the anterior chamber. On the basis of clinical findings and ancillary diagnostic studies, the clinical diagnosis was malignant melanoma of the ciliary body. The enucleated eye showed the tumor to be composed of cells identical to those of a melanocytoma of the optic disk.

PURPOSE: To determine if intraocular pressure plays a part in the pathogenic process of normal-tension glaucoma.
METHODS: One eye of each eligible subject was randomized either to be untreated as a control or to have intraocular pressure lowered by 30% from baseline. Eyes were randomized if they met criteria for diagnosis of normal-tension glaucoma and showed documented progression or high-risk field defects that threatened fixation or the appearance of a new disk hemorrhage. The clinical course (visual field and optic disk) of the group with lowered intraocular pressure was compared with the…

Glaucoma is a prevalent eye disease that can lead to permanent blindness when the optic nerve at the optic nerve head (ONH) is damaged by shearing forces. The Lamina Cribrosa (LC), located in the ONH and closely connected to the sclera, plays a crucial role in determining whether the optic nerve passing through it will sustain shearing-induced damage. Understanding LC morphology is therefore essential for studying the causes and progression of glaucoma. This study aims to analyze the influence of varying LC anterior surface morphologies to the distribution of deformation across different regio
