Thymolipoma: analysis of 27 cases.

PURPOSE: To characterize the radiologic features of thymolipoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-seven cases of thymolipoma were reviewed. Clinical, radiologic, and pathologic findings were noted. RESULTS: The masses occurred in 15 male and 12 female patients (mean age, 26.7 years). All 27 tumors were in the anterior mediastinum; 22 were in the anterior inferior mediastinum. On frontal radiographs, 12 tumors simulated cardiomegaly. On lateral radiographs, 12 tumors draped over the ipsilateral hemidiaphragm, simulating diaphragmatic elevation. Computed tomographic scans (n = 11) demonstrated a

Ethmoid sinus disease: CT evaluation in 400 cases. Part I. Nonsurgical patients.

The unique anatomy of the ethmoid sinuses makes it difficult to interpret "soft-tissue clouding," especially on plain films. The clinical significance of isolated or generalized soft-tissue disease within ethmoid cells is unclear, and the patterns of bone erosion or remodeling must be relied on in establishing a specific differential diagnosis. Of 400 patients studied, 186 had inflammatory disease and 214 had tumors. Squamous cell carcinomas, metastases, and a few aggressive sarcomas were found almost exclusively to have bone destruction, while 94% of the remaining neoplasms were characterized

The computed tomographic findings in benign diseases of the vertebral column.

Computed tomography (CT) has revolutionized the diagnosis of diseases affecting the vertebral column. CT effectively demonstrates the bony vertebral column with its intervertebral articulations, its soft tissue contents, and the surrounding paravertebral soft tissues. The vertebral column may be the site of involvement of a wide variety of benign diseases. These diseases may be congenital or acquired and may arise from within the spinal canal, from the vertebrae themselves, or from the paravertebral soft tissues. These lesions may be unsuspected clinically and may be detected incidentally in p

Estimation of the Young's moduli of fresh human oropharyngeal soft tissues using indentation testing.

Finite element (FE)-based biomechanical simulations of the upper airway are promising computational tools to study abnormal upper airway deformations under obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) conditions and to help guide minimally invasive surgical interventions in case of upper airway collapse. To this end, passive biomechanical properties of the upper airway tissues, especially oropharyngeal soft tissues, are indispensable. This research aimed at characterizing the linear elastic mechanical properties of the oropharyngeal soft tissues including palatine tonsil, soft palate, uvula, and tongue base.

Post-mortem imaging of laryngohyoid fractures in strangulation incidents: first results.

Fractures and soft-tissue injuries of the neck are of great importance in forensic pathology, as they help in assessing whether strangulation took place, and if so, how severely. In this study, we examined the usefulness of post-mortem imaging with multislice computed tomography (MSCT) in detecting lesions of the laryngohyoid structures and the surrounding soft-tissues. For this purpose, we examined MSCT images of the neck of eight deceased persons who had suffered different types of strangulation and compared the findings with those obtained at the subsequent forensic autopsy. In six of the e

Evaluation of soft tissue profile following intraoral ramus osteotomy in Chinese adults with mandibular prognathism.

Twenty-five Chinese adults with mandibular prognathism were treated with either the intraoral vertical subcondylar osteotomy or the bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy. The patients were kept in maxillomandibular fixation for 6 to 8 weeks while osteosynthesis was achieved with the use of intraosseous wiring. Serial lateral cephalograms were taken presurgery and between 12 and 26 months postsurgery, and specific soft and hard tissue points were digitized on a computer. The mean mandibular setback postsurgically was 8.4 +/- 3.2 mm, with a 5.2-degree reduction in point A-nasion-point B angle

CBCT analysis of crestal soft tissue thickness before implant placement and its relationship with cortical bone thickness.

BACKGROUND: The importance of crestal soft tissue thickness and its influence in peri-implant tissue health has been evaluated in few clinical studies. Cone beam computed tomography imaging offers a unique opportunity to investigate variations in crestal soft tissue thickness. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the possible correlation between crestal soft tissue thickness and hard tissue measurements on CBCT images, and to compare crestal soft tissue thickness among different patients and edentulous site groups. METHODS: CBCT images of partially edentulous adult patients tre

Left-sided facial mass in an adult female.

A left maxillary sinus soft tissue mass was discovered on computed tomography in a 70-year-old woman who had been experiencing blood-tinged mucus for 2 years. The lesion demonstrated mild enhancement, and bony destruction. Magnetic resonance imaging displayed a cerebriform appearance of the mass, which mimicked the appearance of inverted papilloma. However, histology and staining identified the lesion as ameloblastoma. Resection of the tumor was successful with no recurrence 1 month later on follow-up computed tomography. This case represents an unusual imaging presentation of ameloblastoma, a

A device to measure the cross-sectional area of soft connective tissues.

A device has been designed and fabricated to measure the cross-sectional area of soft connective tissues ex vivo. It consists of two displacement transducers; one sensing tissue thickness and the other sensing width. Outputs are recorded (via an analog to digital interface) using a personal computer. Numerical integration of a thickness versus width plot computes cross-sectional area. This plot also provides a quality check of acquired data. This device has been successfully used in biomechanical studies of rabbit patellar tendons, rat medial collateral ligaments, and dissected specimens of hu

[Computed tomography of the superior and inferior ankle joint].

Computed tomography of the tibotalar and subtaler joints in standardised planes produces comparable images irrespective of examiners. Traumatic, degenerative or neoplastic lesions of the joint surfaces are shown without superimposition. Intraosseous changes can be localised exactly in relation to the joint. Assessment of possible fractures in children is simplified by simultaneous imaging of soft tissues and bone. Diagnosis of traumatic lesions of ligaments or tendons and dislocation of tendons by bone fragments is possible only on CT-images. After injection of air loose intra-articular bodies

Temporomandibular joint synovial osteochondromatosis: CT manifestations.

Synovial osteochondromatosis is a rare arthropathy of the temporomandibular joint. We report the computed tomographic findings in two subjects with this disorder. Both patients had increased soft-tissue density in the joint with multiple small calcified densities, many of which displayed peripheral calcification. Extensive erosions of the surrounding bony structures were present, affecting the condylar process and fossa, and, in one instance, the walls of the external auditory and carotid canals were thinned. We believe that computed tomography is superior to conventional imaging techniques an

Evaluation of spinal infections by plain radiographs, computed tomography, intrathecal metrizamide, and CT-guided biopsy.

16 cases of spinal infection were reviewed to evaluate the usefulness of plain radiographs, noncontrast computed tomography (CT), computed tomographic metrizamide myelography (CTMM), plain film metrizamide myelography, and CT-guided biopsy techniques. Noncontrast CT was more useful than plain films in the evaluation of disc space and bony involvement and soft tissue extension of infection into the paraspinal spaces. CTMM was needed for evaluation of epidural or subdural involvement of infection in the cervical and thoracic spine, while plain film metrizamide myelography was useful as a survey

Schwannoma originating in the soft palate: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Schwannomas are relatively uncommon, benign, slow-growing neoplasms, which are derived from schwann cells that can arise from any cranial, peripheral, or autonomic nerves. The involvement of the palate is a rare presentation and hardly reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report the case of a 39-year-old woman with a history of a foreign body sensation in the throat and difficult swallowing. CLINICAL FINDINGS AND INVESTIGATIONS: Oral examination showed a smooth, non-tender, right-sided, soft palate mass. Computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a

Three-dimensional prediction of the human eyeball and canthi for craniofacial reconstruction using cone-beam computed tomography.

An anatomical relationship between the hard and soft tissues of the face is mandatory for facial reconstruction. The purpose of this study was to investigate the positions of the eyeball and canthi three-dimensionally from the relationships between the facial hard and soft tissues using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). CBCT scan data of 100 living subjects were used to obtain the measurements of facial hard and soft tissues. Stepwise multiple regression analyses were carried out using the hard tissue measurements in the orbit, nasal bone, nasal cavity and maxillary canine to predict the m

Acute cervical spine trauma: correlation of MR imaging findings with degree of neurologic deficit.

A retrospective analysis of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging studies of 78 patients with acute cervical spinal cord injuries was undertaken to determine which observations related directly to the neurologic injury. All MR imaging studies were performed on a 1.5-T unit and assessed with respect to 14 parameters related to the bony spine, ligaments, prevertebral soft tissues, intervertebral disks, and spinal cord. Forty-eight patients also underwent non-contrast material-enhanced thin-section computed tomography (CT) of the cervical spine. MR imaging was the definitive modality in the assessment

Tophaceous Gout Mimicking a Neoplasm of the Patella.

Tophaceous gout of the patella and extensor apparatus of the knee can mimic a musculoskeletal neoplasm. Considering gout, correlation with clinical history and presentation, and meticulous analysis of imaging semiology are key to a correct diagnosis. The most useful signs are periarticular erosion with overhanging edges, increased soft tissue on radiography and computed tomography, the "snowstorm sign" on ultrasound, variable signal and enhancement, bandlike infiltration of tendons, and osseous erosions with no or little bone marrow edema on magnetic resonance imaging. The use of cephalometric landmarks with 3-dimensional volumetric computer modeling to position an auricular implant surgical template: a clinical report.

The number of tools available to make a correctly positioned surgical guide for auricular implant placement is rapidly expanding as advances in 3-dimensional computer modeling continue. While the correct orientation of a missing auricle previously relied solely on soft tissue topography, computer modeling software now allows for navigational viewing of hard tissue and cephalometric landmarks. This clinical report describes a technique to establish the orientation of an auricular surgical guide incorporating the use of fundamental cephalometry. Cephalometry as a treatment planning tool has been
