This report describes the management of clinically significant, single level cervical spinal canal stenosis associated with articular facet hypertrophy in a three-year-old Great Dane dog, by combined surgical decompression and spinal stabilization. Spinal column stabilization was achieved by ventral application of two String of Pearls locking plates and subsequent decompression was accomplished by unilateral facetectomy. The six-month postoperative reassessment examination confirmed satisfactory clinical outcome with a complete return to normal activity, resolution of neurological deficits and…

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the applicability of 4D phase contrast (4D PC) MR imaging in the assessment of cerebrospinal fluid dynamics in healthy volunteers and patients with lesions at the craniocervical junction or the cervical spinal canal.
METHODS: Ten healthy volunteers and four patients with lesions including Chiari I malformation and cervical canal stenoses were examined by a cardiac-gated 4D PC imaging sequence on 1.5T MRI. Phase contrast images were postprocessed allowing for flow quantification and flow pathline visualisation. Velocity data were compared with conventional axial 2D phas…

BACKGROUND: To assess the effect of 3 different surgical approaches on paraspinal muscle atrophy in patients undergoing lumbar back surgery, we compared their pre- and postoperative CT scans and their serum Hb, CRP, and CPK levels.
METHODS: The study population consisted of 71 patients who had undergone lumbar back surgery with microscopic posterior decompression without fusion. We examined the effect on paraspinal muscle atrophy of 3 different approaches to the spinal canal. Group 1 (n = 19) underwent unilateral paraspinal dissection from the spinous process with cutting of the spinous proce…

Although multiple studies have concluded operative decompression of a traumatically narrowed spinal canal is not indicated because of spontaneous remodeling, instrumental decompression is frequently used as part of the operative treatment of spinal fractures. To investigate the process of remodeling, we studied the diameter of the spinal canal in 95 patients with burst fractures at the thoracolumbar junction (T9-L2). To measure and compare the spinal canal's diameter we used either computed tomography (CT) scans or radiographs, made preoperatively, postoperatively, after 9 months and after 24 …

PURPOSE: To determine the appearance of spinal tumors on magnetic resonance (MR) images of patients with neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2), to assess the biologic behavior of these tumors, and to determine the correlation between NF2 germline mutations and these tumors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Spinal MR images in 49 patients with NF2 were reviewed retrospectively. Intramedullary and intradural extramedullary tumors were counted, and imaging features and growth patterns of intramedullary tumors were determined. Medical records were reviewed for spinal tumor surgery. Data on spinal tumors and NF2 germli

STUDY DESIGN: A case report of a patient with cervical spinal cord and nerve root compression caused by a meningioma en plaque together with calcification of the posterior longitudinal ligament is presented, with a review of the literature.
OBJECTIVE: To present the diagnosis of a calcified dural meningioma en plaque, with extradural extension into the ligamentum flavum, in a woman with cervical myelopathy and neuropathy.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: This case demonstrates that the cervical spine can be involved in dural meningioma en plaque with calcifications, in a manner mimicking ossificat

The central and lateral lumbar canals constitute complex osteofibrous neurovascular tunnels, allowing movement and deformation of the spine … rogenous group of membranous formations, connecting the dura with the PPL and other elements of the spinal canal. They prevent the dura from moving away from the bony container. These ligaments may vary from loose areolar tissue to clearly individualised ligaments and from pure midsagittal septa to more laterally oriented attachments. A double cross vault stru …

STUDY DESIGN: The pathophysiology of lumbar spinal canal stenosis was analyzed with a new model in rats.
OBJECTIVES: To produce chronic compression of the cauda equina in rats for analysis of the pathophysiology of lumbar spinal canal stenosis.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Models of compression to date have involved acute or subacute compression. A model of chronic compression has not been available.
METHODS: A stainless steel wire fastened around the spine at L5 in 3-week-old rats, with a plate inserted against the ventral aspect of the vertebra to protect it from the wire. as the rats grew…

STUDY DESIGN: This archaeologic study, based on four populations, examines the incidence of spina bifida occulta in the lumbar spine and the size of the vertebral canal proximal to the lesion.
OBJECTIVES: To ascertain any significant change in the dimensions of the lumbar spinal canal of skeletons with spina bifida occulta. The incidence of the lesion also was compared in the separate genetic groups.
METHODS: Central canals of 1760 lumbar vertebrae were examined. Silhouette, unmagnified pictures of the vertebral canals were measured by computerized image analysis.
RESULTS: The mid-sagittal …

The authors report a patient in whom rebleeding after operation for a left temporal arteriovenous malformation resulted in the dislocation of multiple hemostatic clips. Several clips, including a Yasargil aneurysm clip, were detected incidentally in the lumbar spinal canal. No clinical signs or symptoms were noted. Retrospectively, passage of the aneurysm clip through the aqueduct could be detected on computerized tomography scans performed to evaluate a series of epileptic seizures.

The diagnostic recognition of acquired stenotic conditions in the lumbar spinal canal occurring from the fifth to the eighth decades of life had led to a significant change in surgical techniques during the last ten years. This communication presents a comparison of surgical techniques used by the author in two consecutive series of patients operated for low back, lumbosciatic, and spondylotic caudal disability syndromes during the period 1965 to 1969 inclusive (100 patients) and 1976 and 1977 (105 patients). Interlaminar discectomy was carried out in 88%, and laminectomy with spinal nerve ner…

PURPOSE: To examine the associations between cerebellar tonsillar ectopia and syrinx size on bony spinal canal diameter in pediatric patients to explore the impact of CM with or without SM on the developing spine.
METHODS: Cohorts of patients with CM + SM, CM-only, and neither condition were compared. Anteroposterior (AP) syrinx diameter was measured at C2 (SX2) and C7 (SX7) for patients with syringomyelia. Tonsillar ectopia was measured for all patients in the CM + SM and CM-only cohorts. AP diameter of the bony spinal canal at C2 (SC2) and C7 (SC7) was measured for all patients. Patients we…

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous hemorrhage in the spinal canal is a rare but life-threatening neurosurgical emergency which has a complex mechanism and presents with diverse clinical manifestations, often resulting in Brown-Séquard syndrome, characterized by typical damage to one side of spinal cord function.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old Han Chinese female presented with a 10-year history of generalized limb numbness and acute-onset left-sided weakness for 1 h. "Physical examination: the patient exhibited Grade 2 muscle strength in the left extremities and Grade 4 strength in the right extremitie…

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Gunshot wounds (GSWs), for increasing violence in urban areas globally and especially among the young population, have been significant causes of morbidity and mortality. These are the most common cause of spinal cord injuries, followed by traffic accidents. The priority of the therapeutic team is to save the victim and then minimise the permanent neural deficits. The indications for lumbosacral decompressive spinal surgery have remained challenging.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old man victim of a gunshot in his left flank presented to the emergency department in
