The relationship between emotion dysregulation and sleep in children and adolescents with ADHD: protocol for a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Over half of children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have difficulties with emotion dysregulation (EDR) and/or sleep, yet the interrelations between emotional regulation and sleep are not well-characterised in this population. This systematic review will address the relationship between these difficulties and investigate whether specific aspects of EDR are more strongly related to sleep problems in youth with ADHD. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will adhere to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis guideline for sys

Early antibiotic exposure and risk of psychiatric and neurocognitive outcomes: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The prenatal and early-life periods pose a crucial neurodevelopmental window whereby disruptions to the intestinal microbiota and the developing brain may have adverse impacts. As antibiotics affect the human intestinal microbiome, it follows that early-life antibiotic exposure may be associated with later-life psychiatric or neurocognitive outcomes. AIMS: To explore the association between early-life (in utero and early childhood (age 0-2 years)) antibiotic exposure and the subsequent risk of psychiatric and neurocognitive outcomes. METHOD: A search was conducted using Medline,

Prevalence, associated factors and consequence of problematic smartphone use among adolescents and young adults in Bangladesh: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Problematic smartphone use (PSU) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, adolescents, and young adults are of major concern to parents. However, the prevalence and associated factors related to these issues in Bangladeshi adolescents and young adults remain unclear to the best of our knowledge. The aim of this study is to assess PSU and ADHD in the context of adolescent and young adult age groups in Bangladesh. METHODS: The present study collected data from diverse geographical locations in Bangladesh via face-to-face surveys using stratified random sampli

The impact of lockdown on sleep patterns of children and adolescents with ADHD.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The current study examined the impact of home confinement (lockdown) because of the COVID-19 pandemic on the sleep patterns of children and adolescents with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS: Nine hundred ninety-two parents of children and adolescents with ADHD filled out an anonymous online survey through the ADHD family association website. The survey investigated the sleep patterns and disturbances (using a modified version of the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children) and screen exposure time before and during lockdown. RESULTS: During lockdown, 59

Recommendations for Social Skills End Points for Clinical Trials in Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

OBJECTIVE: To review parent-report social skills measures to identify and recommend consensus outcomes for use in clinical trials of social deficit in children and adolescents (ages 6-18 years) with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). METHODS: Searches were conducted via PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov to identity social skills outcome measures with English language versions used in clinical trials in the past 5 years with populations with known social skills deficits, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Measures were rated by the Response Evaluati

Motor cortex dysfunction in problem gamblers.

Impairments in response inhibition have been implicated in gambling psychopathology. This behavioral impairment may suggest that the neural mechanisms involved in response inhibition, such as GABAA -mediated neurotransmission in the primary motor cortex (M1), are also impaired. The present study obtained paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation markers of GABAA and glutamate receptor activity from the left M1 of three groups-problem gamblers (n = 17, 12 males), at-risk gamblers (n = 29, 19 males), and controls (n = 23, six males)-with each group matched for alcohol use, substance use, an

Reward Processing in Drug-Naive Youth with Various Levels of Risk for Substance Use Disorders: A Pilot Study.

Background: It has been hypothesized that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and substance use disorders (SUDs) share common neurobiological features. When abnormalities in the mesolimbic reward system are characteristic of children with ADHD, it is unclear whether youth at particularly elevated risk for SUD may exhibit any further disturbances. The objective of this pilot study is to examine possible neurobiological differences among youth with different levels of SUD risk before exposure to any abusable substances. Methods: We recruited 47 drug-naive children aged 8-13 divided i

Contribution of Family Relatedness to Neurobehavioral Comorbidities in Idiopathic Childhood Epilepsies.

OBJECTIVES: Rates of cognitive, academic and behavioral comorbidities are elevated in children with epilepsy. The contribution of environmental and genetic influences to comorbidity risk is not fully understood. This study investigated children with epilepsy, their unaffected siblings, and controls to determine the presence and extent of risk associated with family relatedness across a range of epilepsy comorbidities. METHODS: Participants were 346 children (8-18 years), n=180 with recent-onset epilepsy, their unaffected siblings (n=67), and healthy first-degree cousin controls (n=99). Assess

Differentiating Physicochemical Properties between Addictive and Nonaddictive ADHD Drugs Revealed by Molecular Dynamics Simulation Studies.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most commonly diagnosed mental disorder of children and adolescents. Although psychostimulants are currently the first-line drugs for ADHD, their highly addictive profile raises great abuse concerns. It is known that psychostimulants' addictiveness is largely attributed to their interaction with dopamine transporter (DAT) and their binding modes in DAT can thus facilitate the understanding of the mechanism underlining drugs' addictiveness. However, no DAT residue able to discriminate ADHD drugs' addictiveness is identified, and the way how

Observed fearlessness and positive parenting interact to predict childhood callous-unemotional behaviors among low-income boys.

BACKGROUND: Callous-unemotional behaviors identify children at risk for severe and chronic antisocial behavior. Research is needed to establish pathways from temperament and parenting factors that give rise to callous-unemotional behaviors, including interactions of positive versus harsh parenting with child fearlessness. METHODS: Multimethod data, including parent reports and observations of parent and child behavior, were drawn from a prospective, longitudinal sample of low-income boys (N = 310) with assessments at 18, 24, and 42 months, and at ages 10-12 years old. An attachment research perspective on ADHD.

Since the beginning of clinical attachment research in the mid-1980s the number of research projects in this area has been continuously increasing. The research questions so far can be allocated to numerous medical disciplines such as psychosomatic medicine, adult psychiatry or child and adolescent psychiatry. Recently, children with ADHD and their families have also become subjects of this branch of research. Their specific behavioral characteristics from early childhood on constitute unique challenges on the parent-child interaction. If these interactions develop in a suboptimal way, childre

Ramelteon-induced nightmares: A case report.

Ramelteon is the only FDA-approved melatonin agonist for treatment of insomnia. It acts on melatonin MT1 and MT2 receptors. We describe a case of a patient who was prescribed ramelteon for insomnia disorder. Shortly after initiation of ramelteon, he described vivid nightmares leading to discontinuation of ramelteon. The nightmares ameliorated with ramelteon discontinuation. Ramelteon is well tolerated with a favorable side-effect profile. No documented cases of nightmares secondary to ramelteon use were found in the literature. The effects of ramelteon on rapid eye movement sleep, the stage of

The role of early childhood ADHD and subsequent CD in the initiation and escalation of adolescent cigarette, alcohol, and marijuana use.

Adolescents with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at an increased risk for substance use but the pathways through which this risk emerges are insufficiently understood. Tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana outcomes were compared between adolescents diagnosed with ADHD in early childhood (N = 113) and demographically similar controls (N = 65). Participants were assessed from age 5 until age 18. A comprehensive history of adolescent substance use was compiled for each participant and growth in ADHD and conduct disorder (CD) were modeled as they related to substance use outcomes. Re

The basal ganglia: motor and cognitive relationships in a clinical neurobehavioral context.

New information about the basal ganglia and cerebellar connections with the cerebral cortex has prompted a reevaluation of the role of the basal ganglia in cognition. We know that the relation between the basal ganglia and the cerebral cortical region allows for connections organized into discrete circuits. Rather than serving as a means for widespread cortical areas to gain access to the motor system, these loops reciprocally interconnect a large and diverse set of cerebral cortical areas with the basal ganglia. The properties of neurons within the basal ganglia or cerebellar components of th

Frontostriatal neuroimaging findings differ in patients with bipolar disorder who have or do not have ADHD comorbidity.

BACKGROUND: The inferior frontal cortical (IFC)-striatal network plays an integral role in response inhibition and is compromised in patients with Bipolar Disorder (BP) or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Prior BP functional neuroimaging studies have not accounted for ADHD comorbidity despite its high prevalence. METHODS: The authors conducted an fMRI study using a response inhibition task (Go-NoGo) in 32 euthymic adults with BP, half with comorbid ADHD (BP/ADHD); 16 adults with ADHD alone; and 30 healthy controls. Within- and between-group whole-brain analyses were performed

Developmental delays in children with ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: ADHD is often comorbid with other disorders, but it is often assumed that academic, language, or motor c skills problems are secondary to ADHD rather than that attention problems are secondary to the other disorder or both disorders have a shared etiology. We assessed for comorbid developmental disorders and which cognitive processes were impaired in children with ADHD. METHOD: Measures of intelligence, language, motor skills, social cognition, and executive functions were administered to children with ADHD (n = 53) and age/sex-matched typical children. RESULTS: Clinically signifi

Childhood stimulant treatment and teen depression: is there a relationship?

Recent preclinical data have raised the possibility that prepubertal treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with stimulant medication might increase risk for later depression. The current longitudinal study investigated whether children with ADHD who were treated with stimulant medication displayed heightened levels of adolescent depression. Adolescents diagnosed with ADHD during childhood who had received a minimum of 1 year of treatment with stimulant medication were compared to adolescents with a childhood history of ADHD who were never treated with stimulants and a de
